The District Energy-Efficient Retrofitting of Torrelago (Laguna de Duero – Spain)

The urban growth is estimated to reach up the 66 % by 2050 and consequently the need of resources within the cities will increase significantly. This, combined with the 40 % of energy consumption and 36 % of CO2 emissions of the building sector, makes necessary to accelerate the transition towards more sustainable cities. The CITyFiED project contributes to this transition, aiming to develop an innovative and holistic methodological approach for energy-efficient district renovation and deliver three large scale demonstration cases in the cities of Lund (Sweden), Laguna de Duero (Spain) and Soma (Turkey). CITyFiED methodology consists of several phases that ease the decision-making tasks towards the district renovation, considering the energy efficiency as the main pillar and local authorities as clients. For the case of Torrelago district (Spain) the intervention consists of a set of energy conservative measures including the facąde retrofitting of 143.025 m2 of living space in 31 twelve-storey buildings; the renovation of the district heating network with a new biomass thermal plant; the integration of renewable energy sources, including a micro-cogeneration system, and the installation of individual smart meters. After the renovation action, one-year monitoring campaign is ongoing. The CITyFiED monitoring platform will collect information from the energy systems and deliver environmental, technical, economic and social key performance indicators by March 2019. At the end of the project the achievement of the predefined goals will be verified: Up to 36 % of energy saving and 3,429 tons-CO2/yr emissions saving covering the 59,4 % of the energy consumption with renewable sources.The research and results presented in this paper evolve from activities related to the CITyFiED project, which has received funding from the European Commission under the Grant Agreement no. 609129. Decision-making in school-age sport measured through a digital tool.

El objetivo de este estudio ha sido doble. Por un lado, diseñar y crear un software de evaluación de toma de decisiones en edad escolar, en base a aspectos espacio-temporales, contextualizado en voleibol, denominado “Juego Interactivo de Voleibol”. Por otro lado, analizar y establecer su fiabilidad y validez. El software diseñado se aplicó a una muestra de 132 escolares (64 niños y 68 niñas) de entre 10 y 13 años, de los centros educativos públicos de Educación Primaria y Secundaria de las localidades sevillanas de Arahal y Paradas (España). Para determinar la fiabilidad se estudió la consistencia interna a través del coeficiente alfa de Cronbach. Para calcular el número óptimo de repeticiones se utilizó el Coeficiente de Correlación Intraclase. La validez se comprobó en base a la evaluación de un grupo de 5 expertos. Comportamiento tribológico de materiales cerámicos de nitruro de silicio texturados

Se han fabricado materiales densos de nitruro de silicio (Si3N4) texturados incorporando semillas de β- Si3N4, favoreciendo su alineación mediante extrusión de las piezas en verde y prensado en caliente. Estos materiales presentan elevada anisotropía microestructural que conduce a un comportamiento anisótropo de sus propiedades, tanto mecánicas como tribológicas. Se han realizado ensayos de desgaste en seco mediante movimiento recíproco lineal de pares homólogos con geometría esfera-placa. El material texturado presenta mayor resistencia al desgaste que el de referencia, sin texturar, identificándose como principal mecanismo de desgaste la abrasión debida a microfractura y arranque de granos de Si3N4. The administration of chitosan-tripolyphosphate-DNA nanoparticles to express exogenous SREBP1a enhances conversion of dietary carbohydrates into lipids in the liver of Sparus aurata

In addition to being essential for the transcription of genes involved in cellular lipogenesis, increasing evidence associates sterol regulatory element binding proteins (SREBPs) with the transcriptional control of carbohydrate metabolism. The aim of this study was to assess the effect of overexpression SREBP1a, a potent activator of all SREBP-responsive genes, on the intermediary metabolism of Sparus aurata, a glucose-intolerant carnivorous fish. Administration of chitosan-tripolyphosphate nanoparticles complexed with a plasmid driving expression of the N-terminal transactivation domain of SREBP1a significantly increased SREBP1a mRNA and protein in the liver of S. aurata. Overexpression of SREBP1a enhanced the hepatic expression of key genes in glycolysis-gluconeogenesis (glucokinase and 6-phosphofructo-2-kinase/fructose-2,6-bisphosphatase), fatty acid synthesis (acetyl-CoA carboxylase 1 and acetyl-CoA carboxylase 2), elongation (elongation of very long chain fatty acids protein 5) and desaturation (fatty acid desaturase 2) as well as reduced nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide phosphate production (glucose-6-phosphate 1-dehydrogenase) and cholesterol synthesis (3-hydroxy-3-methylglutaryl-coenzyme A reductase), leading to increased blood triglycerides and cholesterol levels. Iron mining in Goa (India) : an interdisciplinary study

En aquest article es presenten breument els diferents capítols d'un treball interdisciplinari per tal d'entendre el context de prohibició de la mineria de ferro a Goa a finals del 2012 i proporcionar la informació necessària per tal d'orientar i gestionar la presa de decisions sobre l'activitat minera en un futur. Els sis primers capítols consisteixen en l'estudi del medi abiòtic, medi biòtic, fluxos de materials, aspectes socials, aspectes econòmics i finalment aspectes polítics. En canvi, en els dos últims capítols s'avaluen i es gestionen els impactes ambientals de la mineria mitjançant, per una banda, una anàlisi DPSIR i, d'altra banda, es proposen tres escenaris per integrar les diferents variables i fomentar la participació en la presa de decisions. S'ha dut a terme una extensa recerca mitjançant la recopilació de dades, entrevistes i visites a les zones d'estudi d'interès per tal d'entendre el conflicte de la mineria a Goa.En este artículo se presentan brevemente los diferentes capítulos de un trabajo interdisciplinario con el objetivo de entender el contexto de prohibición de la minería de hierro en Goa a finales del 2012 y proporcionar la información necesaria para orientar y gestionar la toma de decisiones sobre la actividad minera en un futuro. Los seis primeros capítulos consisten en el estudio del medio abiótico, medio biótico, flujos de materiales, aspectos sociales, aspectos económicos y finalmente aspectos políticos. En los dos últimos capítulos se pretende evaluar y gestionar los impactos ambientales de la minería mediante un análisis DPSIR y se proponen tres escenarios para integrar las diferentes variables y fomentar la participación en la toma de decisiones. Se ha llevado a cabo una extensa investigación mediante la recopilación de datos, entrevistas y visitas a las zonas de estudio de interés con el fin de entender el conflicto de la minería en Goa.In this article an interdisciplinary study is presented. There are different chapters that attempt to understand the ban on iron mining in Goa on the late 2012 and provide the information required to manage and aid the decisions made about iron mining in Goa. The first six chapters deal with the study of abiotic environment, biotic environment, social features, material flow, economic features and policy. The last two chapters attempt to asses and manage the environmental impacts of iron mining through the DPSIR analysis and provide different scenarios to integrated the various variables and encourage participation in the decisions making. The research has focused on gathering data, depth interviews and visiting study areas with the aim to understand the conflict of iron mining in Goa
