When Is a Bulge Not a Bulge? Inner Disks Masquerading as Bulges in NGC 2787 and NGC 3945

We present a detailed morphological, photometric, and kinematic analysis of two barred S0 galaxies with large, luminous inner disks inside their bars. We show that these structures, in addition to being geometrically disk-like, have exponential profiles (scale lengths \sim 300--500 pc) distinct from the central, non-exponential bulges. We also find them to be kinematically disk-like. The inner disk in NGC 2787 has a luminosity roughly twice that of the bulge; but in NGC 3945, the inner disk is almost ten times more luminous than the bulge, which itself is extremely small (half-light radius \approx 100 pc, in a galaxy with an outer ring of radius \approx 14 kpc) and only \sim 5% of the total luminosity -- a bulge/total ratio much more typical of an Sc galaxy. We estimate that at least 20% of (barred) S0 galaxies may have similar structures, which means that their bulge/disk ratios may be significantly overestimated. These inner disks dominate the central light of their galaxies; they are at least an order of magnitude larger than typical ``nuclear disks'' found in ellipticals and early-type spirals. Consequently, they must affect the dynamics of the bars in which they reside.Comment: LaTeX, 37 pages, 14 EPS figures. To appear in The Astrophysical Journal (November 10, 2003 issue). Lentiviral vector transduction of spermatozoa as a tool for the study of early development

    Get PDF
Spermatozoa and lentiviruses are two of nature’s most efficient gene delivery vehicles. Both can be genetically modified and used independently for the generation of transgenic animals or gene transfer/therapy of inherited disorders. Here we show that mature spermatozoa can be directly transduced with various pseudotyped lentiviral vectors and used in in vitro fertilisation studies. Lentiviral vectors encoding Green Fluorescent Protein (GFP) were shown to be efficiently processed and expressed in sperm. When these transduced sperm were used in in vitro fertilisation studies, GFP expression was observed in arising blastocysts. This simple technique of directly transducing spermatozoa has potential to be a powerful tool for the study of early and pre-implantation development and could be used as a technique in transgenic development and vertical viral transmission studies

Simulation of Many-Body Fermi Systems on a Universal Quantum Computer

We provide fast algorithms for simulating many body Fermi systems on a universal quantum computer. Both first and second quantized descriptions are considered, and the relative computational complexities are determined in each case. In order to accommodate fermions using a first quantized Hamiltonian, an efficient quantum algorithm for anti-symmetrization is given. Finally, a simulation of the Hubbard model is discussed in detail.Comment: Submitted 11/7/96 to Phys. Rev. Lett. 10 pages, 0 figure

Comparing Effectiveness of Top-Down and Bottom-Up Strategies in Containing Influenza

This research compares the performance of bottom-up, self-motivated behavioral interventions with top-down interventions targeted at controlling an “Influenza-like-illness”. Both types of interventions use a variant of the ring strategy. In the first case, when the fraction of a person's direct contacts who are diagnosed exceeds a threshold, that person decides to seek prophylaxis, e.g. vaccine or antivirals; in the second case, we consider two intervention protocols, denoted Block and School: when a fraction of people who are diagnosed in a Census Block (resp., School) exceeds the threshold, prophylax the entire Block (resp., School). Results show that the bottom-up strategy outperforms the top-down strategies under our parameter settings. Even in situations where the Block strategy reduces the overall attack rate well, it incurs a much higher cost. These findings lend credence to the notion that if people used antivirals effectively, making them available quickly on demand to private citizens could be a very effective way to control an outbreak

The Representation of Natural Numbers in Quantum Mechanics

This paper represents one approach to making explicit some of the assumptions and conditions implied in the widespread representation of numbers by composite quantum systems. Any nonempty set and associated operations is a set of natural numbers or a model of arithmetic if the set and operations satisfy the axioms of number theory or arithmetic. This work is limited to k-ary representations of length L and to the axioms for arithmetic modulo k^{L}. A model of the axioms is described based on states in and operators on an abstract L fold tensor product Hilbert space H^{arith}. Unitary maps of this space onto a physical parameter based product space H^{phy} are then described. Each of these maps makes states in H^{phy}, and the induced operators, a model of the axioms. Consequences of the existence of many of these maps are discussed along with the dependence of Grover's and Shor's Algorithms on these maps. The importance of the main physical requirement, that the basic arithmetic operations are efficiently implementable, is discussed. This conditions states that there exist physically realizable Hamiltonians that can implement the basic arithmetic operations and that the space-time and thermodynamic resources required are polynomial in L.Comment: Much rewrite, including response to comments.
