    Controlling parenting and executive functioning in children born preterm

    This study investigated the relations between mothers’ and fathers’ controlling behaviors and the executive functioning of children born preterm. Sixty-eight preterm children and their parents were assessed when the children were 3 ½ years old. The executive functioning was measured using the Headto-Toes-Task and controlling parenting behaviors were measured through a standardized observation of a parent-child interaction. Hierarchical regression analysis showed that both mothers’ and fathers’ controlling behaviors were associated with worse child executive functioning performance, after controlling for the child’s cognitive ability. Findings suggest that both mothers and fathers play an important role in the development of executive functioning of children born prematurely, highlighting the need to consider both parents in the study of and intervention with these children.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

    Descreve-se um caso raro de artrite séptca por Haemophilus Influenzae (Hi) serotipo a (Hia)numa criança com o programa nacional de vacinação atualizado e antecendentes pessoais e familiares irrelevantes. A doente não apresentava fatores de risco e o estudo imunológico realizado não revelou alterações. Existem poucos casos relatados a nível mundial de infecção Hia e, de acordo com a revisão bibliográfica realizada. este é o primeiro caso de infecção osteoarticular por Hia descrito na Europa. No contexto deste caso, salienta-se a importância da determinação da estirpe na era pós-vacinal, bem como a exclusão de fatores predisponentes de doença invasiva por Hi não-b em idade pediátrica

    Paralisia do plexo braquial – uma manifestação rara de infeção osteo-articular

    Introdução: A paralisia do plexo braquial é uma entidade rara após o período neonatal. Resulta habitualmente de mecanismos físicos, mas pode estar relacionada com infeções osteo- articulares. Há poucos casos descritos de associação entre estas infeções e a paralisia secundária a neuropatia. Na maioria dos casos a manifestação mais frequente é a pseudo-paralisia ou fraqueza aparente do membro afetado. Casos Clínicos: Descrevem-se três casos de infeção osteo- articular manifestada por provável paralisia braquial sem os sinais sistémicos típicos de infeção. O tempo decorrido do início da doença ao estabelecimento do diagnóstico diferiu entre os casos, bem como as intervenções terapêuticas e o resultado. Discussão: A infeção osteo-articular pode passar despercebida na infância. Alerta-se para esta manifestação rara de infecção osteo-articular, de forma a evitar o atraso no diagnóstico e as respetivas sequelas

    Reference equations for the 6-minute walk distance in healthy Portuguese subjects 18-70 years old

    Introduction Six-minute walk test (6MWT) is used for evaluating functional exercise capacity. To the best of our knowledge, there are no reference equations to predict six-minute walk distance (6MWD) for the Portuguese population. The aims of the present study were to measure anthropometric data and 6MWD in a sample of healthy Portuguese population, to establish reference equations to predict 6MWD and to compare our equations with those obtained by previously published studies. Methods We conducted an observational prospective study. We consecutively recruited 158 healthy 18–70 years old subjects from Porto district, who performed two 6MWTs using a standardized protocol. The best 6MWD was used for further analysis. Results The mean 6MWD was 627.8 m (SD = 73.3 m). The variables that were significantly associated with the 6MWD were age, sex, BMI and ΔHR (Heart Rateat the end of the test − HRat rest). We found three explanatory models for 6MWD, the best with an explanatory power of 38%: 6MWD = 721.7 − 1.6 × Age − 4.0 × BMI + 0.9 × ΔHR + 58.4 × Sex. We verified that 6MWD decreased 1.6 m per year of age, and 4.0 m per unit of BMI and increased 0.892 m per beat per minute. Moreover, on average, males walk 58.4 m more than females (p < 0.001). Applying equations from other studies to our population resulted in an overestimation or underestimation of the 6MWD. Conclusion The present study was the first to describe the 6MWD in healthy Portuguese people aged 18–70 years old and to propose predictive equations. These can contribute to improving the evaluation of Caucasian Mediterranean patients with diseases that affect their functional capacity

    Cortisol reactivity and negative affect among preterm infants at 12 months during a mother-infant interaction task

    The purpose of this study was to investigate correlates of preterm (PT) infant’s cortisol reactivity and the association to infant negative affect, during a mother-infant interaction procedure. Participants included 48 infants born prematurely (gestational age < 37 weeks) and their mothers, assessed when infants were 12 months old corrected for prematurity. The examined variables comprised both neonatal and environmental dimensions including maternal interactive behavior. Infant negative affect and maternal interactive behavior were assessed with a standardized mother-infant interaction task. A baseline infant saliva sample was collected before the interaction began, and a second sample after the interaction episodes ended. Results revealed that decrease of infant’s cortisol concentration was significantly associated with the exposure to more sensitive, and less intrusive maternal behaviors. However, once controlled for neonatal risk, family SES and maternal psychological distress, the associations were rendered non-significant. Although the association between cortisol reactivity and negative affect trended toward significance, maternal intrusiveness was the only significant predictor of observed infant negative affect.     Mechanical Robustness of Graphene on Flexible Transparent Substrates.

    This study reports on a facile and widely applicable method of transferring chemical vapor deposited (CVD) graphene uniformly onto optically transparent and mechanically flexible substrates using commercially available, low-cost ultraviolet adhesive (UVA) and hot-press lamination (HPL). We report on the adhesion potential between the graphene and the substrate, and we compare these findings with those of the more commonly used cast polymer handler transfer processes. Graphene transferred with the two proposed methods showed lower surface energy and displayed a higher degree of adhesion (UVA: 4.40 ± 1.09 N/m, HPL: 0.60 ± 0.26 N/m) compared to equivalent CVD-graphene transferred using conventional poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA: 0.44 ± 0.06 N/m). The mechanical robustness of the transferred graphene was investigated by measuring the differential resistance as a function of bend angle and repeated bend-relax cycles across a range of bend radii. At a bend angle of 100° and a 2.5 mm bend radius, for both transfer techniques, the normalized resistance of graphene transferred on polyethylene terephthalate (PET) was around 80 times less than that of indium-tin oxide on PET. After 10(4) bend cycles, the resistance of the transferred graphene on PET using UVA and HPL was found to be, on average, around 25.5 and 8.1% higher than that of PMMA-transferred graphene, indicating that UVA- and HPL-transferred graphene are more strongly adhered compared to PMMA-transferred graphene. The robustness, in terms of maintained electrical performance upon mechanical fatigue, of the transferred graphene was around 60 times improved over ITO/PET upon many thousands of repeated bending stress cycles. On the basis of present production methods, the development of the next-generation of highly conformal, diverse form factor electronics, exploiting the emerging family of two-dimensional materials, necessitates the development of simple, low-cost, and mechanically robust transfer processes; the developed UVA and HPL approaches show significant potential and allow for large-area-compatible, near-room temperature transfer of graphene onto a diverse range of polymeric supports.Oppenheimer Research Fellowship, Royal Society, Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (Impact Acceleration Account grant), Innovate UK (Advanced Materials Feasibility Study award
