A Note on the Robustness of Pair Separations Methods in Cosmic Topology

The pair separations statistical methods devised to detect the topology of the universe rely on the accurate knowledge of the three-dimensional positions of the cosmic sources. The determination of these positions, however, involves inevitable observational uncertainties. The only significant (measurable) sign of a nontrivial topology in PSH's was shown to be spikes. We briefly report our results concerning the sensitivity of the topological spikes in the presence of the uncertainties in the positions of the cosmic sources, which arise from uncertainties in the values of the density parameters.Comment: To appear in the Proc. of 10th Marcel Grossmann Meeting on General Relativity. A (3D-nuclear) space odyssey: making sense of Hi-C maps

    Get PDF
Three-dimensional 3D)-chromatin organization is critical for proper enhancer-promoter communication and, therefore, for a precise execution of the transcriptional programs governing cellular processes. The emergence of Chromosome Conformation Capture (3C) methods, in particular Hi-C, has allowed the investigation of chromatin interactions on a genome-wide scale, revealing the existence of overlapping molecular mechanisms that we are just starting to decipher. Therefore, disentangling Hi-C signal into these individual components is essential to provide meaningful biological data interpretation. Here, we discuss emerging views on the molecular forces shaping the genome in 3D, with a focus on their respective contributions and interdependence. We discuss Hi-C data at both population and single-cell levels, thus providing criteria to interpret genomic function in the 3D-nuclear space

Equation for fitting dispersed systems gravity and centrifuge settling data

    Get PDF
Liquid phase accumulation kinetics during sedimentation and centrifugation serves as a source of information about the average settling properties of dispersed systems. A power order fitting function is proposed for describing the dependence of accumulated liquid phase volume on settling time. The function validity was tested for numerous experimental settling data under gravitational and centrifugal forces for different dispersed systems. The obtained results give good correlation between experimental data and fitting curves even when settling displays a lag period. The main advantage of the proposed model is the possibility to fit the liquid phase accumulation kinetics in a wide range of settling time and solids concentration. The power order fitting function allows simulating the liquid phase accumulation in the case of limited experimental data.

    Get PDF

Public sector reform and the state of performance management in Portugal: is there a gap between performance measurement and its use?

    Get PDF
Purpose – This paper analyses the state of performance management in the Portuguese public sector as part of the efforts towards public administration reform. Design/methodology/approach – Theoretically, we took Bouckaert and Halligan’s (2008, pp. 35-39) approach into consideration to analyse the adoption of performance management practices. This approach was supplemented by an adaptation of Pollitt and Bouckaert’s (2011, p. 33) framework to analyse the context for administrative reforms. The used data analysis techniques include documentary analysis (namely legislation and evaluation reports of reform efforts), secondary data analysis and a survey conducted with 296 Portuguese top public managers. Findings – Findings show that Portuguese public sector organizations adopted several tools to measure performance over the years, but failed to incorporate performance information into their management practices or to properly use it for either internal or external purposes. Concerning the ideal types proposed by Bouckaert and Halligan (2008, p. 36), Portugal is considered to fit the ‘Performance Administration’ ideal type, even though it is moving closer to the ‘Managements of Performance’ ideal type. Originality – This is one of the first comprehensive studies on the state of performance management in Portugal framed within the broader context of public sector reforms. The findings will be of interest both to scholars that study public administration reforms and performance management and to Portuguese policymakers and public managers who are interested in understanding and improving the way performance information is measured, incorporated and used in that sector.publishe

    Get PDF
