Me, Myself, and Future Generations: The Role of Affinity and Effectiveness in the Creation of Consumer Environmental Stewardship (CENS)
Policymakers, consumer advocate groups, and researchers agree that consumers need to increase their proenvironmental behaviors if a decent standard of living is to be ensured for future generations. Despite high levels of environmental concern, consumers still refrain from large-scale adoption of proenvironmental behaviors. Social marketers agree that a change in attitudes is not enough to stimulate the necessary behavioral change and are looking for ways to help consumers overcome the costs (e.g., price premiums, inconvenience) that are often associated with proenvironmental behaviors. Currently, consumers often see proenvironmental behavior as a trade-off between short-term personal benefits and longer term collective benefits. The authors contribute to the social marketing literature on proenvironmental behavior by introducing the concept of Consumer Environmental Stewardship (CENS), which centers on the use of intrinsic motivation to stimulate a personal sense of responsibility for the environment. The findings, based on a survey and three experiments, show that the stimulation of consumers’ affinity with future generations (AFGs) and perceived consumer effectiveness (PCE) can help to promote CENS, which in turn raises proenvironmental behaviors. However, this research also shows that increasing levels of AFGs can backfire and result in lower levels of CENS, if consumers experience low levels of PCE

Residual absorption at zero temperature in d-wave superconductors
In a d-wave superconductor with elastic impurity scattering, not all the
available optical spectral weight goes into the condensate at zero temperature,
and this leads to residual absorption. We find that for a range of impurity
parameters in the intermediate coupling regime between Born (weak) and unitary
(strong) limit, significant oscillator strength remains which exhibits a cusp
like behavior of the real part of the optical conductivity with upward
curvature as a function of frequency, as well as a quasilinear temperature
dependence of the superfluid density. The calculations offer an explanation of
recent data on ortho-II YBaCuO which has been considered
anomalous.Comment: Accepted for publication by Phys. Rev. B 7 Pages and 4 Figure
Drought and herbivory as modulators of intraspecific differentiation in seedlings of a mountain tree
In mountain ecosystems, plant regeneration might be constrained by multiple factors that change along elevation gradients and promote traits differentiation. Drought is a strong filter for seedling establishment that might be modified by herbivory co-occurrence. Populations of the tree Maytenus boaria support lower soil moisture and higher herbivory pressure at low elevations than at mid-elevations in CĂłrdoba Mountains, central Argentina. Consequently, we expect that populations from the low elevation perform better in response to drought than populations from mid-elevations and that herbivory modifies these responses. Seedlings from the two elevation origins were exposed to two levels of simulated drought and herbivory in a greenhouse experiment. The selected elevations corresponded to the lowest edge of species distribution (with driest soils and highest herbivory pressure) and the central mid-elevation. Performance-related variables, biomass allocation patterns and several morphological and physiological traits were measured. Mortality patterns and most of morphological and physiological variables showed that drought is a stressful factor at the regeneration stage of M. boaria. The drought effect was increased by simulated herbivory in some variables (LMF, RM:SM and SPAD). In most variables, origin did not influence seedling performance, suggesting that drought response of seedlings is independent of populations’ elevation. Only leaf number and water potential were in line with our predictions and showed an origin response to drought.Fil: Marcora, Paula InĂ©s. Consejo Nacional de Investigaciones CientĂficas y TĂ©cnicas. Projected impacts of climate change on functional diversity of frugivorous birds along a tropical elevational gradient
Climate change forces many species to move their ranges to higher latitudes or elevations. Resulting immigration or emigration of species might lead to functional changes, e.g., in the trait distribution and composition of ecological assemblages. Here, we combined approaches from biogeography (species distribution models; SDMs) and community ecology (functional diversity) to investigate potential effects of climate-driven range changes on frugivorous bird assemblages along a 3000 m elevational gradient in the tropical Andes. We used SDMs to model current and projected future occurrence probabilities of frugivorous bird species from the lowlands to the tree line. SDM-derived probabilities of occurrence were combined with traits relevant for seed dispersal of fleshy-fruited plants to calculate functional dispersion (FDis; a measure of functional diversity) for current and future bird assemblages. Comparisons of FDis between current and projected future assemblages showed consistent results across four dispersal scenarios, five climate models and two representative concentration pathways. Projections indicated a decrease of FDis in the lowlands, an increase of FDis at lower mid-elevations and little changes at high elevations. This suggests that functional dispersion responds differently to global warming at different elevational levels, likely modifying avian seed dispersal functions and plant regeneration in forest ecosystems along tropical mountains
Catalytic Depolymerization of Lignin and Woody Biomass in Supercritical Ethanol:Influence of Reaction Temperature and Feedstock
The one-step ethanolysis approach to upgrade lignin to monomeric aromatics using a CuMgAl mixed oxide catalyst is studied in detail. The influence of reaction temperature (200-420 °C) on the product distribution is investigated. At low temperature (200-250 °C), recondensation is dominant, while char-forming reactions become significant at high reaction temperature (>380 °C). At preferred intermediate temperatures (300-340 °C), char-forming reactions are effectively suppressed by alkylation and Guerbet and esterification reactions. This shifts the reaction toward depolymerization, explaining high monomeric aromatics yield. Carbon-14 dating analysis of the lignin residue revealed that a substantial amount of the carbon in the lignin residue originates from reactions of lignin with ethanol. Recycling tests show that the activity of the regenerated catalyst was strongly decreased due to a loss of basic sites due to hydrolysis of the MgO function and a loss of surface area due to spinel oxide formation of the Cu and Al components. The utility of this one-step approach for upgrading woody biomass was also demonstrated. An important observation is that conversion of the native lignin contained in the lignocellulosic matrix is much easier than the conversion of technical lignin.</p
Free Energy and Magnetic Penetration Depth of a -Wave Superconductor in the Meissner State
We investigate the free energy and the penetration depth of a
quasi-two-dimensional d-wave superconductor in the presence of a weak magnetic
field by taking account of thermal, nonlocal and nonlinear effects. In an
approximation in which the superfluid velocity is assumed to be slowly
varying, the free energy is calculated and compared with available results in
several limiting cases. It is shown that either nonlocal or nonlinear effects
may cut off the linear- dependence of both the free energy and the
penetration depth in all the experimental geometries. At extremely low , the
nonlocal effects will also generically modify the linear dependence of the
penetration depth ("nonlinear Meissner effect") in most experimental
geometries, but for supercurrents oriented along the nodal directions, the
effect may be recovered. We compare our predictions with existing experiments
on the cuprate superconductors.Comment: 18 revtex pages with 4 eps figures, final versio
Nonhydrothermal Synthesis and Properties of Saponite-Like Materials
Abstract-Main features of nonhydrothermal synthesis of saponite-like materials containing Zn(II) and Mg(II) cations in octahedral networks were studied. Optimal conditions for the synthesis were determined. The influence exerted by the double-charged structure-forming cation on the rate of structure formation in the synthesized materials and also on their pore structure and thermal stability was studied
