    The importance of cancer patients' functional recollections to explore the acceptability of an isometric-resistance exercise intervention: A qualitative study

    Background and Aims: Although it has been widely recognized the potential of physical activity to help cancer patients' preparation for and recovery from surgery, there is little consideration of patient reflections and recovery experiences to help shape adherence to exercise programs. The aim was to explore the acceptability of our newly proposed isometric exercise program in a large general hospital trust in England providing specialist cancer care by using patient recollections of illness and therapy prior to undertaking a randomized controlled trial. Methods: Four Focus groups (FGs) were conducted with cancer survivors with an explicit focus on patient identity, functional capacity, physical strength, exercise advice, types of activities as well as the timing of our exercise program and its suitability. Thematic framework analysis was used with NVivo 11. Results: FG data was collected in January 2016. A total of 13 patients were participated, 10 were male and 3 were female with participants' ages ranging from 39 to 77. Data saturation was achieved when no new information had been generated reaching “information redundancy.” Participants reflected upon their post-surgery recovery experiences on the appropriateness and suitability of the proposed intervention, what they thought about its delivery and format, and with hindsight what the psychological enablers and barriers would be to participation. Conclusion: Based upon the subjective recollections and recovery experiences of cancer survivors, isometric-resistance exercise interventions tailored to individuals with abdominal cancer has the potential to be acceptable for perioperative patients to help increase their physical activity and can also help with emotional and psychological recovery

    Lifestyle Habits : Diet, physical activity and sleep duration among Omani adolescents

    Objectives: This study aimed to investigate the lifestyle habits—physical activity (PA), eating habits (EH), and sleep duration (SD)—of Omani adolescents, and to examine gender differences in such variables. Methods: 802 Omani adolescents (442 females and 360 males), aged 15‒18 years were randomly recruited. Anthropometric indices, PA level, and EH and SD were evaluated by the Arab Teenage Lifestyle questionnaire. A semi-quantitative food frequency questionnaire for dietary assessment was also administered. Results: The results showed that although the study subjects had a sedentary lifestyle (lack of PA, average of 6.7 hours sleep, and consumption of high calorie foods), they maintained a normal body mass (less than 25 Kg/m2). Males were more than twice as active as females. With respect to EH, there were few gender differences, except in dairy and meat consumption where 62.5% and 55.5% of males consumed more than 3 servings, respectively, compared to 18.78 % and 3.76% of females, respectively. In addition, waist/height ratio, height, reasons for being active, energy drinks, potato consumption, eating sweets, vigorous PA and breakfast EHs were statistically significant independent predictors for BMI, P <0.05 for both males and females. Conclusion: This study revealed a high prevalence of sedentary behaviors and a low level of physical activity, especially among females. Unhealthy dietary habits were also widely found among both genders. There is an urgent need for more research as well as a national policy promoting active living and healthy eating and discouraging sedentary behaviour among Omani adolescents

    Seatbelt syndrome associated with an isolated rectal injury: case report

    Seatbelt syndrome is defined as a seatbelt sign associated with a lumbar spine fracture and a bowel perforation. An isolated rectal perforation due to seatbelt syndrome is extremely rare. There is only one case reported in the Danish literature and non in the English literature. A 48-year old front seat restrained passenger was involved in a head-on collision. He had lower abdominal pain and back pain. Seatbelt mark was seen across the lower abdomen. Initial trauma CT scan was normal except for a burst fracture of L5 vertebra which was operated on by internal fixation on the same day. The patient continued to have abdominal pain. A repeated abdominal CT scan on the third day has shown free intraperitoneal air. Laparotomy has revealed a perforation of the proximal part of the rectum below the recto sigmoid junction. Hartmann's procedure was performed. The abdomen was left open. Gradual closure of the abdominal fascia over a period of two weeks was performed. Postoperatively, the patient had temporary urinary retention due to quada equina injury which resolved 10 months after surgery. The presence of a seatbelt sign and a lumbar fracture should raise the possibility of a bowel injury

    Association of Diet Quality With Metabolic (Dysfunction) associated Fatty Liver Disease in Veterans in Primary Care

    BACKGROUND: Diet is associated with metabolic (dysfunction)-associated fatty liver disease (MAFLD), but the dietary composition associated with MAFLD risk has not been well-examined. AIM: The purpose of this study was to assess the association of two healthy eating indices with the presence and severity of MAFLD in a sample of Veterans in a primary care setting. METHODS: This was a single center cross-sectional study using a random stratified sample of Veterans enrolled in primary care. Participants underwent a Fibroscan and completed an interviewer-administered Diet History Questionnaire II from which we calculated the Healthy Eating Index-2015 and Alternate Mediterranean Diet Score. We used multivariable logistic regression models to assess associations of dietary quality with MAFLD. RESULTS: We analyzed data from 187 participants, 53.5% of whom were female. On average, participants were 50.2 years of age (SD, 12.3 years) with an average BMI of 31.7 kg/m DISCUSSION: We found that the Alternate Mediterranean Diet Score was significantly associated with lower MAFLD risk in Veterans; however, the association was mediated by BMI and total energy intake. A Mediterranean-style diet could potentially help reduce the risk of MAFLD, particularly if it helps control total energy intake and weight

    Shape stabilization and laser triggered shape transformation of magnetic particle functionalized liquid metal motors

    Liquid metal motors made from biologically benign gallium are promising candidates for various applications ranging from drug delivery to targeting and killing cancer cells directly. One of the main problems with this novel technology is the need to utilize a membrane, making it possible to maintain a defined shape in order to perform the required functions. For magnetic remote guidance, liquid metal motors can be doped with magnetic iron microparticles, forming a transition magnetic liquid. In an alternative approach liquid metal structures are coated with magnetite nanoparticles. We hereby present an approach to laminate biologically benign gallium-based magnetic liquid metal motors with a biodegradable and biocompatible macromolecular thin film to retain the initial shape. Thanks to the polymer lamination and by the help of magnetic fields, the presented liquid metal motors can be remotely guided. The shape retaining macromolecular thin film can be liquefied by photothermal effects such as laser irradiation in order to change the shape of the liquid metal motor into a droplet due to surface energy minimization, allowing for penetration of structures smaller than the initial motor size. This work uses a relatively large technical demonstrator to show the technical realization and properties of this novel system, which opens up new paths and potential applications

    Visual Function and Brief Cognitive Assessment for Multiple Sclerosis (BICAMS) in Optic Neuritis Clinically Isolated Syndrome Patients

    BACKGROUND: In this study, we hypothesized that clinically isolated syndrome–optic neuritis patients may have disturbances in neuropsychological functions related to visual processes. METHODS: Forty-two patients with optic neuritis within 3 months from onset and 13 healthy controls were assessed at baseline and 6 months with MRI (brain volumes, lesion load, and optic radiation lesion volume) and optical coherence tomography (OCT) (peripapillary retinal nerve fiber layer [RNFL], ganglion cell and inner plexiform layers [GCIPLs], and inner nuclear layer). Patients underwent the brief cognitive assessment for multiple sclerosis, high-contrast and low-contrast letter acuity, and color vision. RESULTS: At baseline, patients had impaired visual function, had GCIPL thinning in both eyes, and performed below the normative average in the visual-related tests: Symbol Digit Modalities Test and Brief Visuospatial Memory Test-Revised (BVMT-R). Over time, improvement in visual function in the affected eye was predicted by baseline GCIPL (P = 0.015), RNFL decreased, and the BVMT-R improved (P = 0.001). Improvement in BVMT-R was associated with improvement in the high-contrast letter acuity of the affected eye (P = 0.03), independently of OCT and MRI metrics. CONCLUSION: Cognitive testing, assessed binocularly, of visuospatial processing is affected after unilateral optic neuritis and improves over time with visual recovery. This is not related to structural markers of the visual or central nervous system

    Embryonic stem cell-derived cardiomyocytes harbor a subpopulation of niche-forming Sca-1 + progenitor cells

    Abstract The adult mammalian heart is known to contain a population of cardiac progenitor cells. It has not been unambiguously determined, however, whether these cells form as part of the developmental program of the heart or migrate there by way of the circulatory system. This study was done in order to determine the origin of this population of cells. A population of cardiomyocytes was established from mouse embryonic stem (ES) cells using a genetic selection technique. In order to determine whether cardiac progenitor cells exist within this ES cell-derived cardiomyocyte population, the cells were analyzed by fluorescence activated cell sorting (FACS) using an antibody directed against stem cell antigen-1 (Sca-1). We observed that approximately 4% of the cardiomyocyte population was composed of Sca-1 ? cells. When the Sca-1 ? cells were isolated by magnetic cell sorting and differentiated as cellular aggregates, contractions were observed in 100% of the aggregates. Gene expression studies using quantitative RT-PCR showed that these cells expressed terminally differentiated cardiac-specific genes. When three-dimensional cellular aggregates were formed from ES cell-derived cardiomyocytes co-cultured with adult HL-1 cardiomyocytes, the Sca-1 ? cells were found to ''sort out'' and form niches within the cell aggregates. Our data demonstrate that cardiac progenitor cells in the adult heart originate as part of the developmental program of the heart and that Sca-1 ? progenitor cells can provide an important in vitro model system to study the formation of cellular niches in the heart

    Preconcentration and Detection of Gefitinib Anti-Cancer Drug Traces from Water and Human Plasma Samples by Means of Magnetic Nanoparticles

    Along of widespread application of anti-cancer drug Gefitinib (GEF), it appears in human body fluids as well as clinical wastewater. Consequently, a reliable and easy-to-adapt detection technique is of essential importance to quantify the drug in different media. The extraction and quantitative detection of anti-cancer drug Gefinitib (GEF) is demonstrated based on a straightforward and efficient magnetic nanoparticle-assisted preconcentration route from water and human plasma samples. Iron oxide magnetic nanoparticles (Fe3O4) have been prepared with an average particle size of 15 nm and utilized as extractible adsorbents for the magnetic solid-phase extraction (MSPE) of GEF in aqueous media. The method is based on MSPE and preconcentration of GEF followed by High-Performance Liquid Chromatography-Ultraviolet Detection (HPLC-UV). The yield of GEF extraction under the optimum MSPE conditions were 94% and 87% for water and plasma samples, respectively. The chromatographic separation was carried out isocratically at 25 °C on a Phenomenex C8 reversed phase column (150 mm × 4.6 mm, with 5 µm particle size). The proposed method was linear over concentration ranges of 15.0–300.0 and 80.0–600.0 ng/mL for water and plasma samples with limits of detection of 4.6 and 25.0 ng/mL in a respective order. Relative standard deviations (%RSD) for intra-day and inter-day were 0.75 and 0.94 for water samples and 1.26 and 1.70 for plasma samples, respectively. Using the magnetic nanoparticles (MNPs) as loaded drug-extractors made the detection of the anti-cancer drug environmentally friendly and simple and has great potential to be used for different drug-containing systems
