    Kinesiophobia in migraine

Pain aggravation by movement and avoidance of movement (kinesiophobia) is often reported by patients during migraine attacks. Yet its specific contribution to migraine diagnosis is undetermined. To characterize the frequency and severity of kinesiophobia during migraine and its role in the diagnosis of primary headaches, we questioned 150 patients (126 women and 24 men, average age 38.5 yrs) with migraine (n = 111) or tension-type headache (TTH) (n = 39) about aggravation of pain by bending forward, brisk head movements (jolt), and avoidance of movement during the attacks. The degree of pain worsening by each stimulus was measured through a visual analog scale and compared to worsening produced by other sensory stimuli such as light, sound, and smell. The discrimination power of kinesiophobia between migraine and TTH was calculated, using the International Classification of Headache Disorders criteria as gold standard. Sensitivity/specificity of studied symptoms was high in differentiating the 2 headache types: bending forward: 98%/85.7%; jolt: 96.3%/81.6%; and immobility during the attacks: 100%/70%. The degree of kinesiophobia was identical to photo- and phonophobia in migraine patients. We conclude that kinesiophobia discriminates between migraine and TTH. Bending forward and jolt may be useful additional questions to ask patients for the differentiation of headache attacks. PERSPECTIVE: This article evaluates the specific role of movement (movement-induced pain aggravation and avoidance of movement) in primary headaches. Kinesophobia is an easy symptom to screen, explained by migraine pathophysiology, and proved to be a sensitive and specific measure to identify migraine attacks when compared to tension-type headache

    Mathematical retroreflectors

Retroreflectors are optical devices that reverse the direction of incident beams of light. Here we present a collection of billiard type retroreflectors consisting of four objects; three of them are asymptotically perfect retroreflectors, and the fourth one is a retroreflector which is very close to perfect. Three objects of the collection have recently been discovered and published or submitted for publication. The fourth object - notched angle - is a new one; a proof of its retroreflectivity is given.Comment: 32 pages, 19 figure

Primary Effusion Lymphoma in a HIV Infected Patient

Ecophysiological potential of the Dão terroir for the production of Touriga Nacional red grapes

Proceedings - IX International Terroir Congress, 2012Aiming to evaluate the potential of the portuguese Dão winegrowing region for the production of Touriga Nacional (TN) red grapes, climatic, ecophysiological and viticultural data from two different climatic years (2004, wet year and 2005, dry year) are presented and discussed. The data was collected in the control non-irrigated plants of an irrigation experiment installed at the Dão Research Station, Nelas, Portugal. The vineyard is established in a typical granitic soil and trained on a vertical shoot positioning. According to the Géoviticulture Multicriteria Climatic Classification System, the Dão region is classified as temperate/temperate warm for the heliothermal index, with cool nights (night cold index) and moderately dry (dryness index). In 2004 the predawn leaf water potential presented always values higher than -0.2 MPa from flowering to harvest but in 2005 moderate to severe water stress was observed during the ripening period (-0.4 MPa at veraison to -0.6 MPa at harvest). Leaf stomatal conductance and photosynthetic rate displayed a decreasing pattern from flowering to harvest in both years but attained much lower values in the 2005 ripening period as compared to that of 2004. The yield was similar in both years but 2005 showed lower sugar content, similar titratable acidity and a higher anthocyanin berry skin content. Our data shows that the Dão terroir presents a high inter-annual climate variability which has important repercussions on TN responses being the most unfavorable climatic years those were the high temperatures are coincident with water stress during the first half of the ripening period. In those years irrigation should be applied in order to obtain better quality grapes

Asymmetric core combustion in neutron stars and a potential mechanism for gamma ray bursts

We study the transition of nuclear matter to strange quark matter (SQM) inside neutron stars (NSs). It is shown that the influence of the magnetic field expected to be present in NS interiors has a dramatic effect on the propagation of a laminar deflagration (widely studied so far), generating a strong acceleration of the flame in the polar direction. This results in a strong asymmetry in the geometry of the just formed core of hot SQM which resembles a cylinder orientated in the direction of the magnetic poles of the NS. This geometrical asymmetry gives rise to a bipolar emission of the thermal neutrino-antineutrino pairs produced in the process of SQM formation. The neutrino-antineutrino pairs annihilate into electron-positron pairs just above the polar caps of the NS giving rise to a relativistic fireball, thus providing a suitable form of energy transport and conversion to gamma emission that may be associated to short gamma ray bursts (GRBs).Comment: 2 figure

Improving the Cut Surface Quality by Optimizing Parameters in the Fibre Laser Cutting Process

    Get PDF
One of the main problems with laser cutting equipment is related to the wrong setting of cutting parameters. The mismatching of these parameters leads to a loss of cut surface quality, which is hardly re-established. This loss of quality is usually related to a burr problem. Thus, this study is aimed to improve and optimize this process using a fibre laser equipment. Three important laser cutting parameters were studied in order to investigate their importance in the cut surface quality: radiation power, cutting speed and gas pressure. The different values were performed cutting a stainless steel AISI 316L and a cold rolled steel St12. Metallographic and cut surface analysis, burr and roughness measurements were carried out, supported by a Scanning Electron Microscopy and profilometry. Through the Taguchi statistical analysis model, it is possible to indicate the best set of laser cutting parameters. It was verified that the values recommended by the equipment manufacturer can be optimized, being possible to use less radiation power in the laser beam with greater speed of cut, providing a better cut surface quality, improving and optimizing the entire process.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio
