Variation in motion events: Theory and applications

    Get PDF
This chapter analyses the role of intratypological and dialectal variation in the lexicalisation of motion events (Talmy 1991, 2000) and its application to second language acquisition. The first part discusses intratypological variation with respect to the semantic component of Path and proposes a cline of Path salience on the basis of twenty-one languages. Then, it describes dialectal variation in Spanish and Aragonese. Results show that dialects within these two Romance languages differ in the type of linguistic resources they use as well as in their quality and quantity. The second part briefly reviews some L2 problematic areas that can benefit from these approaches such as conceptual transfer, deixis, and idiomaticity. Examples are drawn from L2 Spanish and L2 Basque

Objective: We identify factors related to SARS-CoV-2 infection linked to hospitalization, ICU admission, and mortality and develop clinical prediction rules. Methods: Retrospective cohort study of 380,081 patients with SARS-CoV-2 infection from March 1, 2020 to January 9, 2022, including a subsample of 46,402 patients who attended Emergency Departments (EDs) having data on vital signs. For derivation and external validation of the prediction rule, two different periods were considered: before and after emergence of the Omicron variant, respectively. Data collected included sociodemographic data, COVID-19 vaccination status, baseline comorbidities and treatments, other background data and vital signs at triage at EDs. The predictive models for the EDs and the whole samples were developed using multivariate logistic regression models using Lasso penalization. Results: In the multivariable models, common predictive factors of death among EDs patients were greater age; being male; having no vaccination, dementia; heart failure; liver and kidney disease; hemiplegia or paraplegia; coagulopathy; interstitial pulmonary disease; malignant tumors; use chronic systemic use of steroids, higher temperature, low O2 saturation and altered blood pressure-heart rate. The predictors of an adverse evolution were the same, with the exception of liver disease and the inclusion of cystic fibrosis. Similar predictors were found to be related to hospital admission, including liver disease, arterial hypertension, and basal prescription of immunosuppressants. Similarly, models for the whole sample, without vital signs, are presented. Conclusions: We propose risk scales, based on basic information, easily-calculable, high-predictive that also function with the current Omicron variant and may help manage such patients in primary, emergency, and hospital care. A large geometric distortion in the first photointermediate of rhodopsin, determined by double-quantum solid-state NMR

    No full text
Double-quantum magic-angle-spinning NMR experiments were performed on 11,12-C-13(2)-retinylidene-rhodopsin under illumination at low temperature, in order to characterize torsional angle changes at the C11-C12 photoisomerization site. The sample was illuminated in the NMR rotor at low temperature (similar to 120 K) in order to trap the primary photointermediate, bathorhodopsin. The NMR data are consistent with a strong torsional twist of the HCCH moiety at the isomerization site. Although the HCCH torsional twist was determined to be at least 40A degrees, it was not possible to quantify it more closely. The presence of a strong twist is in agreement with previous Raman observations. The energetic implications of this geometric distortion are discussed

Topological and geometrical restrictions, free-boundary problems and self-gravitating fluids

Let (P1) be certain elliptic free-boundary problem on a Riemannian manifold (M,g). In this paper we study the restrictions on the topology and geometry of the fibres (the level sets) of the solutions f to (P1). We give a technique based on certain remarkable property of the fibres (the analytic representation property) for going from the initial PDE to a global analytical characterization of the fibres (the equilibrium partition condition). We study this analytical characterization and obtain several topological and geometrical properties that the fibres of the solutions must possess, depending on the topology of M and the metric tensor g. We apply these results to the classical problem in physics of classifying the equilibrium shapes of both Newtonian and relativistic static self-gravitating fluids. We also suggest a relationship with the isometries of a Riemannian manifold.Comment: 36 pages. In this new version the analytic representation hypothesis is proved. The Word for Woman is Wilderness is an adventure novel just published (January 2018) whose main character, Erin, promotes an even more rebellious figure than the Mountain Men: Mountain Women. They have historically challenged civilisation's role in relation to our physical and intellectual freedom but they have been blinded by their patriarcal point of view. I will follow Erin's journey to show how Abi Andrews deconstructs Mountain Men's heroic roles and nature's metaphors through ecology and feminism. I will contrast Erin's discoveries about Wilderness with the explanations given by the previous writers on wilderness she mentions. The Word for Woman is Wilderness és una novel·la d'aventures recentment publicada (gener 2018) on la protagonista, Erin, promou una figura encara més rebel que els Mountain Men: Mountain Women. The HERA-B Ring Imaging Cherenkov Counter

The HERA-B RICH uses a radiation path length of 2.8 m in C_4F_10 gas and a large 24 square meters spherical mirror for imaging Cherenkov rings. The photon detector consists of 2240 Hamamatsu multi-anode photomultipliers with about 27000 channels. A 2:1 reducing two-lens telescope in front of each PMT increases the sensitive area at the expense of increased pixel size, resulting in a contribution to the resolution which roughly matches that of dispersion. The counter was completed in January of 1999, and its performance has been steady and reliable over the years it has been in operation. The design performance of the RICH was fully reached: the average number of detected photons in the RICH for a beta=1 particle was found to be 33 with a single hit resolution of 0.7 mrad and 1 mrad in the fine and coarse granularity regions, respectively.Comment: 29 pages, 23 figure

Poster Session [EP-2226] Purpose or Objective To analyse the toxicity outcomes after treatment with Electronic Brachytherapy (XB) in postsurgical endometrial cancer patients treated at our medical centre. Material and Methods Prospective study in which we selected 94 patients, between September/2015 and September/2017, that received treatment with XB administered twice a week after endometrial cancer surgery, with IMRT planificati on. The patients were divided in two groups: Group 1 (57/94) considered high risk received external beam radiotherapy (46Gy) followed by XB (15Gy in 5Gy fractions) and group 2 (37/94) considered intermediate risk received exclusive XB (25Gy in 5Gy fraction s). We analysed the median dose in bladder, rectum and sigmoid D2cc, V50, V35 with XB comparing the doses with Ir192. The vaginal mucosa, gastrointestinal (GI) and genitourinary (GU) toxicities were analysed with the Common Terminology Criteria for Adverse Events (CTCAE 4.0) scale. Results The median dose in bladder with XB vs. Ir192 was: 2cc 62.9 vs. 69.9%, V50 7.1 vs. 12.6Gy, V35 15 vs. 28.1. In rectum XB vs. Ir192 was: D 2cc 64.01% vs. 67.7%, V50 7.8 vs. 10.9Gy, V35 16.5 vs. 31.8Gy. In sigmoid XB vs. Ir 192 was: D 50.37%vs. 58.0%, V50 8.8 vs. 16.2Gy, V35 21.2 vs. 37.5Gy. The median follow- up was 11 months (range 1 - 23, 9 months). In group 1, acute vaginal mucositis (G1) was observed in 35.08% of the patients, GI toxicity (G1) in 5.26% and GU toxicity (G1) in 10.52%. In group 2, we observed acute vaginal mucositis G1 in 45% of the patients and G2 in 10.81%, GI toxicity (G1) occurred in 2.7% and GU toxicity (G1) was present in 16.21%. There was no grade 3 or greater toxicity in any of the groups. Late toxici ty was observed in only 4 patients: Mucositis (G1) in 3 patients and GU toxicity (G1) in 1 patient. Conclusion The dose received by the organs at risk with the XB is less compared to Ir192, with a good coverage of the PTV. The greater toxicity was observe d immediately after the treatment was finished with an important reduction of the symptoms after 6 months. This technique shows excellent results as for toxicity
