Tuning of heat and charge transport by Majorana fermions
We investigate theoretically thermal and electrical conductances for the
system consisting of a quantum dot (QD) connected both to a pair of Majorana
fermions residing the edges of a Kitaev wire and two metallic leads. We
demonstrate that both quantities reveal pronounced resonances, whose positions
can be controlled by tuning of an asymmetry of the couplings of the QD and a
pair of MFs. Similar behavior is revealed for the thermopower, Wiedemann-Franz
law and dimensionless thermoelectric figure of merit. The considered geometry
can thus be used as a tuner of heat and charge transport assisted by MFs
Spin-dependent beating patterns in thermoelectric properties: Filtering the carriers of the heat flux in a Kondo adatom system
We theoretically investigate the thermoelectric properties of a
spin-polarized two-dimensional electron gas hosting a Kondo adatom hybridized
with an STM tip. Such a setup is treated within the single-impurity Anderson
model in combination with the atomic approach for the Green's functions. Due to
the spin dependence of the Fermi wavenumbers the electrical and thermal
conductances, together with thermopower and Lorenz number reveal beating
patterns as function of the STM tip position in the Kondo regime. In
particular, by tuning the lateral displacement of the tip with respect to the
adatom vicinity, the temperature and the position of the adatom level, one can
change the sign of the Seebeck coefficient through charge and spin. This opens
a possibility of the microscopic control of the heat flux analogously to that
established for the electrical current
Efeito de genótipos de sorgo sobre o predador Chrysoperla externa (Hagen) (Neuroptera: Chrysopidae) alimentado com Schizaphis graminum (Rondani) (Hemiptera: Aphididae).
O trabalho objetivou avaliar o efeito indireto da resistência de genótipos de soro sobre o predador Chrysoperla externa (Hagen) usando o pulgão Schizaphis graminum (Rondani) como presa. Os genótipos usados no estudo foram: GR 11111 e TX 430 x GR 111 (resistentes), GB 3B (moderadamente resistente) e BR 007B (suscetível). Larvas recém-eclodidas foram confinadas individualmente em recipientes de vidro e alimentadas com S. graminum, criados separadamente em cada um dos quatro genótipos. após a emergência, os adultos obtidos de cada tratamento foram sexados e agrupados aos casais, colocados em gaiolas contendo dieta à base de levedo de cerveja e mel. Os insetos foram observados diariamente da fase jovem até o período de 60 dias após a emergência do adulto. Genótipos com maior grau de resistência proporcionaram maior consumo de pulgões pelo predador, porém menor peso a este. Quando os pulgões foram criados no genótipo resistente GR 11111, o peso das larvas, sobrevivência da pré-pupa e longevidade da fêmea do predador foram inferiores. As associações positivas observadas entre o predador, C. externa, e o genótipo resistente, TX 430 x GR 111, e entre o predador e o genótipo moderadamente resistente GB 3B, evidenciaram a possibilidade de integração entre os dois métodos de controle: resistência de plantas e controle biológico
The first radial velocity measurements of a microlensing event: no evidence for the predicted binary
The gravitational microlensing technique allows the discovery of exoplanets
around stars distributed in the disk of the galaxy towards the bulge. However,
the alignment of two stars that led to the discovery is unique over the
timescale of a human life and cannot be re-observed. Moreover, the target host
is often very faint and located in a crowded region. These difficulties hamper
and often make impossible the follow-up of the target and study of its possible
companions. Gould et al. (2013) predicted the radial-velocity curve of a binary
system, OGLE-2011-BLG-0417, discovered and characterised from a microlensing
event by Shin et al. (2012). We used the UVES spectrograph mounted at the VLT,
ESO to derive precise radial-velocity measurements of OGLE-2011-BLG-0417. To
gather high-precision on faint targets of microlensing events, we proposed to
use the source star as a reference to measure the lens radial velocities. We
obtained ten radial velocities on the putative V=18 lens with a dispersion of
~100 m/s, spread over one year. Our measurements do not confirm the
microlensing prediction for this binary system. The most likely scenario is
that the assumed V=18 mag lens is actually a blend and not the primary lens
that is 2 magnitude fainter. Further observations and analyses are needed to
understand the microlensing observation and infer on the nature and

Solar analogs with and without planets: T trends and galactic evolution
We explore a sample of 148 solar-like stars to search for a possible
correlation between the slopes of the abundance trends versus condensation
temperature (known as the Tc slope) both with stellar parameters and Galactic
orbital parameters in order to understand the nature of the peculiar chemical
signatures of these stars and the possible connection with planet formation. We
find that the Tc slope correlates at a significant level with the stellar age
and the stellar surface gravity. We also find tentative evidence that the Tc
slope correlates with the mean galactocentric distance of the stars (Rmean),
suggesting that stars that originated in the inner Galaxy have fewer refractory
elements relative to the volatile ones. We found that the chemical
peculiarities (small refractory-to-volatile ratio) of planet-hosting stars is
probably a reflection of their older age and their inner Galaxy origin. We
conclude that the stellar age and probably Galactic birth place are key to

A new analysis of the WASP-3 system: no evidence for an additional companion
In this work we investigate the problem concerning the presence of additional
bodies gravitationally bounded with the WASP-3 system. We present eight new
transits of this planet and analyse all the photometric and radial velocity
data published so far. We did not observe significant periodicities in the
Fourier spectrum of the observed minus calculated (O-C) transit timing and
radial velocity diagrams (the highest peak having false-alarm probabilities of
56 per cent and 31 per cent, respectively) or long-term trends. Combining all
the available information, we conclude that the radial velocity and transit
timing techniques exclude, at 99 per cent confidence limit, any perturber more
massive than M \gtrsim 100 M_Earth with periods up to 10 times the period of
the inner planet. We also investigate the possible presence of an exomoon on
this system and determined that considering the scatter of the O-C transit
timing residuals a coplanar exomoon would likely produce detectable transits.
This hypothesis is however apparently ruled out by observations conducted by
other researchers. In case the orbit of the moon is not coplanar the accuracy
of our transit timing and transit duration measurements prevents any
significant statement. Interestingly, on the basis of our reanalysis of SOPHIE
data we noted that WASP-3 passed from a less active (log R'_hk=-4.95) to a more
active (log R'_hk=-4.8) state during the 3 yr monitoring period spanned by the
observations. Despite no clear spot crossing has been reported for this system,
this analysis claims for a more intensive monitoring of the activity level of
this star in order to understand its impact on photometric and radial velocity

Long-term follow-up of myopic choroidal neovascularization treated with ranibizumab
PURPOSE:
To evaluate the long-term safety and efficacy of intravitreal ranibizumab in the treatment of myopic choroidal neovascularization (CNV).
METHODS:
Three-year retrospective, nonrandomized, interventional case series. Forty eyes of 39 patients with myopic CNV were included; 15 with previous photodynamic therapy, and 25 naïve eyes. Best-corrected visual acuity (BCVA) changes, central foveal thickness (CFT), and number of treatments were assessed, from baseline to month 36.
RESULTS:
Mean visual acuity improved from 55.4 Early Treatment Diabetic Retinopathy Study (ETDRS) letters at baseline to 59.7 letters at 12 months (p = 0.07), 61.8 letters at 24 months (p = 0.008) and 63.4 letters at 36 months (p = 0.039). Twenty-five percent of the patients gained ≥15 letters (3 lines) at 12 months, 30% at 24 months and 35% at 36 months. There was a mean reduction of 80 μm in CFT (p < 0.001). A mean of 4.1 injections were performed in the first year, 2.4 in the second year and 1.1 in the third year. Fifty-three percent of the eyes had no need for treatment during the third year of follow-up.
CONCLUSIONS:
Intravitreal ranibizumab seems to be an effective and safe therapeutic procedure to treat CNV in highly myopic eyes, with a high proportion of patients gaining or stabilizing BCVA at a 3-year follow-up.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio
