Characterization of the primary matabolome of Brachystegia boehmii and Colophospermum mopane under different fire regimes in Miombo and Mopane African woodlands
Original ResearchMiombo and Mopane are ecological and economic important woodlands from Africa,
highly affected by a combination of climate change factors, and anthropogenic fires.
Although most species of these ecosystems are fire tolerant, the mechanisms that
lead to adaptive responses (metabolic reconfiguration) are unknown. In this context,
the aim of this study was to characterize the primary metabolite composition of
typical legume trees from these ecosystems, namely, Brachystegia boehmii (Miombo)
and Colophospermum mopane (Mopane) subjected to different fire regimes. Fresh
leaves from each species were collected in management units and landscapes across
varied fire frequencies in the Niassa National Reserve (NNR) and Limpopo National
Park (LNP) in Mozambique. Primary metabolites were extracted and analyzed with a
well-established gas chromatography time-of-flight mass spectrometry metabolomics
platform (GC-TOF-MS). In B. boehmii, 39 primary metabolites were identified from which
seven amino acids, two organic acids and two sugars increased significantly, whereas
in C. mopane, 41 primary metabolites were identified from which eight amino acids, one
sugar and two organic acids significantly increased with increasing fire frequency. The
observed changes in the pool of metabolites of C. mopane might be related to high
glycolytic and tricarboxylic acid (TCA) rate, which provided increased levels of amino
acids and energy yield. In B. boehmii, the high levels of amino acids might be due
to inhibition of protein biosynthesis. The osmoprotectant and reactive oxygen species
(ROS) scavenging properties of accumulated metabolites in parallel with a high-energy
yield might support plants survival under fire stressinfo:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio
Quality Indicators Compliance and Survival Outcomes in Breast Cancer according to Age in a Certified Center
Simple Summary In this study, we examined how age impacts the outcomes of breast cancer by comparing three age groups: patients 45 years old or younger, patients between 46 and 69 years old, and patients 70 years old or older. Despite similar cancer staging and tumor characteristics among the age groups, the study found that older patients were prone to suboptimal treatment. Older patients also had a lower overall survival rate, but this was not related to cancer itself. Instead, we found that undertreatment was a factor that negatively impacted survival for older women with breast cancer. This study suggests that tumor characteristics and treatment compliance are more important predictors of survival than chronological age. Age as a breast cancer (BC) prognostic factor remains debatable. Several studies have investigated clinicopathological features at different ages, but few make an age group direct comparison. The European Society of Breast Cancer Specialists quality indicators (EUSOMA-QIs) allow a standardized quality assurance of BC diagnosis, treatment, and follow-up. Our objective was to compare clinicopathological features, compliance to EUSOMA-QIs and BC outcomes in three age groups (= 70 years). Data from 1580 patients with staged 0-IV BC from 2015 to 2019 were analyzed. The minimum standard and desirable target on 19 mandatory and 7 recommended QIs were studied. The 5-year relapse rate, overall survival (OS), and BC-specific survival (BCSS) were also evaluated. No meaningful differences in TNM staging and molecular subtyping classification between age groups were found. On the contrary, disparities in QIs compliance were observed: 73.1% in = 70 years women. Despite a unique exception-more invasive G3 tumors in younger patients-no age-specific differences in BC biology impacting outcome were found. Although increased noncompliance in older women, no outcome correlation was observed with QIs noncompliance in any age group. Clinicopathological features and differences in multimodal treatment (not the chronological age) are predictors of lower BCSS.The article publication was supported by National Funds through FCT-Fundacao para a Ciencia e a Tecnologia, I.P., within CINTESIS, R & D Unit (reference UIDB/4255/2020) and within the scope of the project RISE, Associated Laboratory (reference LA/P/0053/2020). SOPHIE velocimetry of Kepler transit candidates XIV. A joint photometric, spectroscopic, and dynamical analysis of the Kepler-117 system
As part of our follow-up campaign of Kepler planets, we observed Kepler-117
with the SOPHIE spectrograph at the Observatoire de Haute-Provence. This
F8-type star hosts two transiting planets in non-resonant orbits. The planets,
Kepler-117 b and c, have orbital periods and days,
and show transit-timing variations (TTVs) of several minutes. We performed a
combined Markov chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) fit on transits, radial velocities,
and stellar parameters to constrain the characteristics of the system. We
included the fit of the TTVs in the MCMC by modeling them with dynamical
simulations. In this way, consistent posterior distributions were drawn for the
system parameters. According to our analysis, planets b and c have notably
different masses ( and M) and low
orbital eccentricities ( and ). The
uncertainties on the derived parameters are strongly reduced if the fit of the
TTVs is included in the combined MCMC. The TTVs allow measuring the mass of
planet b, although its radial velocity amplitude is poorly constrained.
Finally, we checked that the best solution is dynamically stable.Comment: 16 pages, of whom 5 of online material.12 figures, of whom 2 in the

Local inflammation, lethality and cytokine release in mice injected with Bothrops atrox venom.
We have provided evidence that: (a) lethality of mice to crude Bothrops venom varies according the isogenic strain (A/J > C57Bl/6 > A/Sn > BALB/c > C3H/HePas > DBA/2 > C3H/He); (b)BALB/c mice (LD50=100.0 microg) were injected i.p. with 50 microg of venom produced IL-6, IL-10, INF-gamma, TNF-alpha and NO in the serum. In vitro the cells from the mice injected and challenged with the venom only released IL-10 while peritoneal macrophages released IL-10, INF-gamma and less amounts of IL-6; (c) establishment of local inflammation and necrosis induced by the venom, coincides with the peaks of TNF-alpha, IFN-gamma and NO and the damage was neutralized when the venom was incubated with a monoclonal antibody against a 60 kDa haemorrhagic factor. These results suggest that susceptibility to Bothrops atrox venom is genetically dependent but MHC independent; that IL-6, IL-10, TNF-alpha, IFN-gamma and NO can be involved in the mediation of tissue damage; and that the major venom component inducers of the lesions are haemorrhagins
SOPHIE velocimetry of Kepler transit candidates. XV. KOI-614b, KOI-206b, and KOI-680b: a massive warm Jupiter orbiting a G0 metallic dwarf and two highly inflated planets with a distant companion around evolved F-type stars
We report the validation and characterization of three new transiting
exoplanets using SOPHIE radial velocities: KOI-614b, KOI-206b, and KOI-680b.
KOI-614b has a mass of and a radius of
, and it orbits a G0, metallic
([Fe/H]=) dwarf in 12.9 days. Its mass and radius are familiar and
compatible with standard planetary evolution models, so it is one of the few
known transiting planets in this mass range to have an orbital period over ten
days. With an equilibrium temperature of K, this places
KOI-614b at the transition between what is usually referred to as "hot" and
"warm" Jupiters. KOI-206b has a mass of and a
radius of , and it orbits a slightly evolved F7-type
star in a 5.3-day orbit. It is a massive inflated hot Jupiter that is
particularly challenging for planetary models because it requires unusually
large amounts of additional dissipated energy in the planet. On the other hand,
KOI-680b has a much lower mass of and requires less
extra-dissipation to explain its uncommonly large radius of . It is one of the biggest transiting planets characterized so far,
and it orbits a subgiant F9-star well on its way to the red giant stage, with
an orbital period of 8.6 days. With host stars of masses of
and , respectively, KOI-206b,
and KOI-680b are interesting objects for theories of formation and survival of
short-period planets around stars more massive than the Sun. For those two
targets, we also find signs of a possible distant additional companion in the
system
