On Some Stability Properties of Compactified D=11 Supermembranes

    Get PDF
We desribe the minimal configurations of the bosonic membrane potential, when the membrane wraps up in an irreducible way over S1Ă—S1S^{1}\times S^{1}. The membrane 2-dimensional spatial world volume is taken as a Riemann Surface of genus gg with an arbitrary metric over it. All the minimal solutions are obtained and described in terms of 1-forms over an associated U(1) fiber bundle, extending previous results. It is shown that there are no infinite dimensional valleys at the minima.Comment: 12 pages,Latex2e lamuphys, Invited talk at International Seminar "Supersymetry and Quantum Symmetries", Dubn

Putting String/Fivebrane Duality to the Test

According to string/fivebrane duality, the Green-Schwarz factorization of the D=10D=10 spacetime anomaly polynomial I12I_{12} into X4 X8X_4\, X_8 means that just as X4X_4 is the anomaly polynomial of the d=2d=2 string worldsheet so X8X_8 should be the anomaly polynomial of the d=6d=6 fivebrane worldvolume. To test this idea we perform a fivebrane calculation of X8X_8 and find perfect agreement with the string one--loop result.Comment: 14 pages, CERN TH-6614/92, CTP-TAMU 60/9

On the Stability of Compactified D=11 Supermembranes

We prove D=11 supermembrane theories wrapping around in an irreducible way over S1Ă—S1Ă—M9S^{1} \times S^{1}\times M^{9} on the target manifold, have a hamiltonian with strict minima and without infinite dimensional valleys at the minima for the bosonic sector. The minima occur at monopole connections of an associated U(1) bundle over topologically non trivial Riemann surfaces of arbitrary genus. Explicit expressions for the minimal connections in terms of membrane maps are presented. The minimal maps and corresponding connections satisfy the BPS condition with half SUSY.Comment: 15 pages, latex. Added comments in conclusions and more reference

Fractal extra dimension in Kaluza-Klein theory

Kaluza-Klein theory in which the geometry of an additional dimension is fractal has been considered. In such a theory the mass of an elementary electric charge appears to be many orders of magnitude smaller than the Planck mass, and the "tower" of masses which correspond to higher integer charges becomes aperiodic.Comment: 3 pages, accepted for publication in Phys.Rev.D (submitted on 3.28.2001

The Dilemma of Treating Delirium: the Conundrum of Drug Management.

OPINION STATEMENT: Delirium is a common medical complication in people living with cancer, particularly with more advanced disease. Delirium is associated with significant symptom burden which causes distress and impacts quality of life. As recommended by international guidelines, a high degree of suspicion is needed to ensure delirium is detected early. Attention to collateral history can provide clues to changes in cognition and attention. Non-pharmacological approaches that can be considered essential elements of care are effective in reducing the risk of delirium. Delirium screening using a validated measure is recommended as even expert clinicians can underdiagnose or miss delirium. The diagnostic assessment requires consideration of the cancer diagnosis and comorbidities, in the context of potential reversibility, goals of care, and patient preferences. The gold standard approach based on expert consensus is to institute management for delirium precipitants supported by non-pharmacological essential care, with the support of an interdisciplinary team. Medication management should be used sparingly and for a limited period of time wherever possible for severe perceptual disturbance or agitation which has not improved with non-pharmacological approaches. Clinicians should be familiar with the registered indication for medications and seek informed consent for off-label use. All interventions put in place to manage delirium need to consider net clinical benefit, including harms such as sedation and loss of capacity for meaningful interaction. Clear communication and explanation are needed regularly, with the person with delirium as far as possible and with surrogate decision makers. Delirium can herald a poor prognosis and this needs to be considered and be discussed as appropriate in shared decision-making. Recall after delirium has resolved is common, and opportunity to talk about this experience and the related distress should be offered during the period after recovery

Reducing SS- duality to TT- duality

The infrared limit of D=4,  N=4D=4,~~N=4 Yang-Mills theory with compact gauge group GG compactified on a two-torus is governed by an effective superconformal field theory. We conjecture that this is a certain orbifold involving the maximal torus of GG. Yang-Mills SS-duality makes predictions for all correlators of this effective conformal field theory. These predictions are shown to be implied by the standard TT-duality of the conformal field theory. Consequently, Montonen-Olive duality between electric and magnetic states reduces to the standard two-dimensional duality between momentum and winding states.Comment: 13 pages, harvmac, no figures.
