Evaluation of two interaction techniques for visualization of dynamic graphs
Several techniques for visualization of dynamic graphs are based on different
spatial arrangements of a temporal sequence of node-link diagrams. Many studies
in the literature have investigated the importance of maintaining the user's
mental map across this temporal sequence, but usually each layout is considered
as a static graph drawing and the effect of user interaction is disregarded. We
conducted a task-based controlled experiment to assess the effectiveness of two
basic interaction techniques: the adjustment of the layout stability and the
highlighting of adjacent nodes and edges. We found that generally both
interaction techniques increase accuracy, sometimes at the cost of longer
completion times, and that the highlighting outclasses the stability adjustment
for many tasks except the most complex ones.Comment: Appears in the Proceedings of the 24th International Symposium on

An Interactive Approach for Exploration of Flows Through Direction-Based Filtering
This paper is concerned with the representation and exploration of flows, defined as spatial interactions between geographic locations. Flows are challenging to display in a comprehensible manner due to the nature of the data, which are characterized by many crossings and overlaps leading to clutter. A number of different strategies have been suggested for addressing this problem, which commonly involve reducing the search space, aggregating the data or simplifying the representations often at the cost of information loss or distortion of spatial context. We propose an interactive approach for exploring large and highly connected networks of flows without distorting the geographical space and without losing the context overview in the process. The approach is based on a flow-specific interaction technique for filtering the data by direction, that enables an analyst to successively identify underlying spatial arrangement patterns. We illustrate our approach through exploring flows of tourists and locals in the Greater London area
The review reports studies of PHA biodegradation behavior in natural freshwater and marine
environments. The factors determining polymer degradation rates in water basin include the temperature
and the mineral component of the water, the structure of the aquatic ecosystem and bacterioplankton
composition. Anaerobic degradation occurs at slower rates as compared with aerobic process. One of
the factors limiting PHA degradation rates is deficiency of dissolved mineral phosphorus, which hinders
the development of microbial components of the ecosystem. Differences in biodegradation patterns
of PHA specimens are accounted for by different structures and surface areas of specimens, which
influence the adhesion of microorganisms. Bacteria are main PHA destructors in water ecosystems as
opposed to soil environments where micromycetes are most significant degradersВ обзоре приведены результаты исследований по биодеградации полигидроксиалканоатов
Microbial Degradation of Polyhydroxyalkanoates in Fresh Tropical Water
Bacillus, Acinetobacter
Bacillus, Pseudomonas,
Corynebacterium, Mycobacterium,
Verticillium albaThe biodegradation patterns of different polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHAs) was studied in freshwater
tropical reservoirs of South Vietnam (Nha Trang), in an artificial still water reservoir and in running
water of the River Kai. It was revealed the weight loss profiles of films and pellets in the River Kai
did not depend on the chemical structure of the polymer samples; poly(3-hydroxybutyrate) and a
copolymer of poly(3-hydroxybutyrate-co-3-hydroxyvalerate) degraded with the same intensity. The
weight loss of homopolymer samples was faster in artificial reservoir. The study of the taxonomic
variety of microorganisms in the fouling films of polymer samples showed differences in the dominant
communities of PHA-degrading microorganisms. Among other organotrophs the proportion of PHAdepolymerase
synthesizing bacteria was higher in the River Kai and ranging from 7 to 17 % in different
samples, in spite of that the taxonomic variety of PHA-degrading bacteria was less diverse. The PHAdegrading
community of the River Kai was represented by Bacillus, Acinetobacter and Streptomyces,
from artificial reservoir samples Bacillus, Pseudomonas, Corynebacterium, Mycobacterium and
Actinobacteria was isolated. The PHA-degrading fungi – Aspergillus candidus and Verticillium alba –
were found only in the artificial reservoi
Biodegradation Behavior of Polyhydroxyalkanoates on the Territory of Vietnam and Central Siberia
For the first time, PHA biodegradation was studied in microecosystems situated in different regions
and under different climate conditions. The study showed that the time necessary for the polymer weight
to decrease to a half of its initial weight, could vary significantly, depending on the number, species
composition, and physiological activity of microbial communities which are determined, in particular,
by the specific properties of the natural environment, temperature conditions and soil moisture.
Biodegradation behavior also depends on PHA composition (PHA copolymers are degraded faster
in Siberian soils while homopolymers are degraded at a higher rate in the tropical soils), production
method, and the shape of the polymer device (2D specimens are degraded faster than 3D pressed
ones). Differences in the species composition of the identified major PHA degrading microorganisms
account for the particular PHA biodegradation behavior in different ecosystems
