A mechanism for unipolar resistance switching in oxide non-volatile memory devices
Building on a recently introduced model for non-volatile resistive switching,
we propose a mechanism for unipolar resistance switching in
metal-insulator-metal sandwich structures. The commutation from the high to low
resistance state and back can be achieved with successive voltage sweeps of the
same polarity. Electronic correlation effects at the metal-insulator interface
are found to play a key role to produce a resistive commutation effect in
qualitative agreement with recent experimental reports on binary transition
metal oxide based sandwich structures.Comment: 4 pages, 2 figure
Pacific Ocean Forcing and Atmospheric Variability are the Dominant Causes of Spatially Widespread Droughts in the Contiguous United States
The contributions of oceanic and atmospheric variability to spatially widespread summer droughts in the contiguous United States (hereafter, pan-CONUS droughts) are investigated using 16-member ensembles of the Community Climate Model version 3 (CCM3) forced with observed sea surface temperatures (SSTs) from 1856 to 2012. The employed SST forcing fields are either (i) global or restricted to the (ii) tropical Pacific or (iii) tropical Atlantic to isolate the impacts of these two ocean regions on pan-CONUS droughts. Model results show that SST forcing of pan-CONUS droughts originates almost entirely from the tropical Pacific because of atmospheric highs from the northern Pacific to eastern North America established by La Nia conditions, with little contribution from the tropical Atlantic. Notably, in all three model configurations, internal atmospheric variability influences pan-CONUS drought occurrence by as much or more than the ocean forcing and can alone cause pan-CONUS droughts by establishing a dominant high centered over the US montane West. Similar results are found for the Community Atmosphere Model version 5 (CAM5). Model results are compared to the observational record, which supports model-inferred contributions to pan-CONUS droughts from La Nias and internal atmospheric variability. While there may be an additional association with warm Atlantic SSTs in the observational record, this association is ambiguous due to the limited number of observed pan-CONUS. The ambiguity thus opens the possibility that the observational results are limited by sampling over the 20th-century and not at odds with the suggested dominance of Pacific Ocean forcing in the model ensembles
Spin-triplet pairing instability of the spinon Fermi surface in a U(1) spin liquid
Recent experiments on the organic compound \kappa-(ET)_2Cu_2(CN)_3 have
provided a promising example of a two dimensional spin liquid state. This phase
is described by a two-dimensional spinon Fermi sea coupled to a U(1) gauge
field. We study Kohn-Luttinger-like pairing instabilities of the spinon Fermi
surface due to singular interaction processes with twice-the-Fermi-momentum
transfer. We find that under certain circumstances the pairing instability
occurs in odd-orbital-angular-momentum/spin-triplet channels. Implications to

Performance of RF MEMS switches at low temperatures
The actuation voltage of microelectromechanical system (MEMS) \ud
metal switches was investigated at temperatures ranging from 10 to 290 K. The investigation shows a 50% increase in the actuation voltage at low temperature. A comparison has been made using a published model and showed similar increment of actuation voltage at low temperature
Hysteresis Switching Loops in Ag-manganite memristive interfaces
Multilevel resistance states in silver-manganite interfaces are studied both
experimentally and through a realistic model that includes as a main ingredient
the oxygen vacancies diffusion under applied electric fields. The switching
threshold and amplitude studied through Hysteresis Switching Loops are found to
depend critically on the initial state. The associated vacancy profiles further
unveil the prominent role of the effective electric field acting at the
interfaces. While experimental results validate main assumptions of the model,
the simulations allow to disentangle the microscopic mechanisms behind the

Asymptotics of Bayesian Uncertainty Estimation in Random Features Regression
In this paper we compare and contrast the behavior of the posterior
predictive distribution to the risk of the maximum a posteriori estimator for
the random features regression model in the overparameterized regime. We will
focus on the variance of the posterior predictive distribution (Bayesian model
average) and compare its asymptotics to that of the risk of the MAP estimator.
In the regime where the model dimensions grow faster than any constant multiple
of the number of samples, asymptotic agreement between these two quantities is
governed by the phase transition in the signal-to-noise ratio. They also
asymptotically agree with each other when the number of samples grow faster
than any constant multiple of model dimensions. Numerical simulations
illustrate finer distributional properties of the two quantities for finite
dimensions. We conjecture they have Gaussian fluctuations and exhibit similar
properties as found by previous authors in a Gaussian sequence model, which is

Microscopic origin of bipolar resistive switching of nanoscale titanium oxide thin films
We report a direct observation of the microscopic origin of the bipolar
resistive switching behavior in nanoscale titanium oxide films. Through a
high-resolution transmission electron microscopy, an analytical TEM technique
using energy-filtering transmission electron microscopy and an in situ x-ray
photoelectron spectroscopy, we demonstrated that the oxygen ions piled up at
top interface by an oxidation-reduction reaction between the titanium oxide
layer and the top Al metal electrode. We also found that the drift of oxygen
ions during the on/off switching induced the bipolar resistive switching in the
titanium oxide thin films.Comment: 10 pages, 4 figure
Compact single-shot hyperspectral imaging using a prism
We present a novel, compact single-shot hyperspectral imaging method. It enables capturing hyperspectral images using a conventional DSLR camera equipped with just an ordinary refractive prism in front of the camera lens. Our computational imaging method reconstructs the full spectral information of a scene from dispersion over edges. Our setup requires no coded aperture mask, no slit, and no collimating optics, which are necessary for traditional hyperspectral imaging systems. It is thus very cost-effective, while still highly accurate. We tackle two main problems: First, since we do not rely on collimation, the sensor records a projection of the dispersion information, distorted by perspective. Second, available spectral cues are sparse, present only around object edges. We formulate an image formation model that can predict the perspective projection of dispersion, and a reconstruction method that can estimate the full spectral information of a scene from sparse dispersion information. Our results show that our method compares well with other state-of-the-art hyperspectral imaging systems, both in terms of spectral accuracy and spatial resolution, while being orders of magnitude cheaper than commercial imaging systems
