    Assessing the effectiveness of traction gels using full-scale and field testing

    Leaf fall during the autumn season creates low adhesion problems on the railways. Traction gels are used to prevent low adhesion, but very little testing has been carried out to assess their performance. Views on their effectiveness vary and their usage is inconsistent across the UK network as a result. This work developed a range of full-scale laboratory and field tests that can be used to assess traction gel performance. The outcomes can lead to increased industry confidence in their ability to mitigate low adhesion, as well as in future product development. It was shown that as a wheel passes over a puddle of traction gel on a rail head, that the gel element is squeezed away leaving the solid particles behind, pick-up on the wheel of particles was also evident. Traction gels were shown to increase traction in full-scale laboratory friction tests in dry and low adhesion conditions. Field brake tests showed that braking was effective in low adhesion and dry conditions with traction gel applied, matching the laboratory test results. The traction gel was also shown to remove a leaf layer, artificially produced by running a DMU over leaf material on a test track. Subsequent work should validate the results on a working railway line during the autumn season

    Mechanisms explaining transitions between tonic and phasic firing in neuronal populations as predicted by a low dimensional firing rate model

    Several firing patterns experimentally observed in neural populations have been successfully correlated to animal behavior. Population bursting, hereby regarded as a period of high firing rate followed by a period of quiescence, is typically observed in groups of neurons during behavior. Biophysical membrane-potential models of single cell bursting involve at least three equations. Extending such models to study the collective behavior of neural populations involves thousands of equations and can be very expensive computationally. For this reason, low dimensional population models that capture biophysical aspects of networks are needed. \noindent The present paper uses a firing-rate model to study mechanisms that trigger and stop transitions between tonic and phasic population firing. These mechanisms are captured through a two-dimensional system, which can potentially be extended to include interactions between different areas of the nervous system with a small number of equations. The typical behavior of midbrain dopaminergic neurons in the rodent is used as an example to illustrate and interpret our results. \noindent The model presented here can be used as a building block to study interactions between networks of neurons.     HPV16 oncogene expression levels during early cervical carcinogenesis are determined by the balance of epigenetic chromatin modifications at the integrated virus genome.

    In cervical squamous cell carcinomas, high-risk human papillomavirus (HRHPV) DNA is usually integrated into host chromosomes. Multiple integration events are thought to be present within the cells of a polyclonal premalignant lesion and the features that underpin clonal selection of one particular integrant remain poorly understood. We previously used the W12 model system to generate a panel of cervical keratinocyte clones, derived from cells of a low-grade premalignant lesion naturally infected with the major HRHPV type, HPV16. The cells were isolated regardless of their selective advantage and differed only by the site of HPV16 integration into the host genome. We used this resource to test the hypothesis that levels of HPV16 E6/E7 oncogene expression in premalignant cells are regulated epigenetically. We performed a comprehensive analysis of the epigenetic landscape of the integrated HPV16 DNA in selected clones, in which levels of virus oncogene expression per DNA template varied ~6.6-fold. Across the cells examined, higher levels of virus expression per template were associated with more open chromatin at the HPV16 long control region, together with greater loading of chromatin remodelling enzymes and lower nucleosome occupancy. There were higher levels of histone post-translational modification hallmarks of transcriptionally active chromatin and lower levels of repressive hallmarks. There was greater abundance of the active/elongating form of the RNA polymerase-II enzyme (RNAPII-Ser2P), together with CDK9, the component of positive transcription elongation factor b complex responsible for Ser2 phosphorylation. The changes observed were functionally significant, as cells with higher HPV16 expression per template showed greater sensitivity to depletion and/or inhibition of histone acetyltransferases and CDK9 and less sensitivity to histone deacetylase inhibition.     Enriching news events with meta-knowledge information

    Given the vast amounts of data available in digitised textual form, it is important to provide mechanisms that allow users to extract nuggets of relevant information from the ever growing volumes of potentially important documents. Text mining techniques can help, through their ability to automatically extract relevant event descriptions, which link entities with situations described in the text. However, correct and complete interpretation of these event descriptions is not possible without considering additional contextual information often present within the surrounding text. This information, which we refer to as meta-knowledge, can include (but is not restricted to) the modality, subjectivity, source, polarity and specificity of the event. We have developed a meta-knowledge annotation scheme specifically tailored for news events, which includes six aspects of event interpretation. We have applied this annotation scheme to the ACE 2005 corpus, which contains 599 documents from various written and spoken news sources. We have also identified and annotated the words and phrases evoking the different types of meta-knowledge. Evaluation of the annotated corpus shows high levels of inter-annotator agreement for five meta-knowledge attributes, and moderate level of agreement for the sixth attribute. Detailed analysis of the annotated corpus has revealed further insights into the expression mechanisms of different types of meta-knowledge, their relative frequencies and mutual correlations

    Using computer-based technology to improve feedback to staff and students on MCQ assessments

    The massification of higher education (HE) has led to an unprecedented increase in the number of students in the classrooms, resulting in increased workload for teaching staff, sometimes leading to a great reliance on Multiple Choice Questions (MCQs) examinations with limited feedback provided to students. The central role of feedback in student learning is well recognised; however, it is often one of the poorest scoring items in Student Evaluation of Teaching and Learning (SETL) surveys. Teaching staff also need feedback on the quality of the examinations they set. In response to these key teaching and learning issues, this study developed a computer-aided system for providing meaningful and customised feedback on performance to students and the quality of MCQ assessment items to teaching staff. Furthermore, student and staff perceptions of the effectiveness and value of the feedback to learning were evaluated. Student experiences indicated that the feedback was timely, well presented, easy to understand and would aid revision for further study. In addition, the efficient provision of automatically generated item performance information to teaching staff allowed convenient quality assurance (QA) monitoring, informed staff of the progress of students' learning, and enabled modification of teaching to better support student learning. © 2013 Taylor & Francis

    This chapter describes the state of the art in the area of internationalization of higher education (IHE) and English-medium instruction (EMI) by setting out the key concepts, research methods and areas of controversy to be addressed in the various chapters of the volume. The first section of the chapter looks broadly at internationalization as a field, outlining the areas of study, and the findings of large-scale surveys as well as identifying the most popular areas of research. second thematic section looks at how internationalization intersects with English-medium instruction, paying particular attention to language policy, the role of English as a lingua franca (ELF), and the teaching and learning of disciplinary content. The section concludes with some recommendations for research and teaching in EMI
