    Transportation and Quality of Life

    This paper studies the importance of transportation for the quality of life in Denmark. The average Dane spends about 55 minutes on transport per day (DTU [2013]) and the average household's expenditure devoted to transport is about 20 % of the total household budget (Berri et al. [2014]).1 It is therefore important to recognize the importance of transportation for the quality of life. Transportation is derived demand as individuals often consume the service not because they benet from consumption directly, but because they partake in other consumption or activities elsewhere (see e.g. Small and Verhoef [2007]). Transportation allows households to buy consumption goods and activities, get to work and enjoy leisure. Households therefore face in general trade-o between, on one hand productivity and consumption advantages (high-paying jobs and high quality local urban amenities), and on the other hand higher costs of living and dis-amenities (high housing costs, congestions and pollution), when they decide where to live. Transportation infrastructure facilitates interaction within cities. It relieves pressure on urban land by enabling workers to live at some distance from their jobs at reasonable commutes. Transport infrastructure thus aect the attractiveness of urban areas. We construct a transport adjusted Quality of Life Index (QLI) for the 98 urban areas - municipalities - covering Denmark. Using this index we investigate the importance of adjusting for the inter area commute patterns in terms of the quality of life of a typical household.     Climate and Hunger in the Middle AgesThe term "Medieval Warm Period" has been used to describe a past climate epoch in Europe and neighbouring regions during the 11th-14th centuries. However, it has been demonstrated that this warm period varies geographically in a considerable way and that the evidence does not support a synchronous period of anomalous warmth during the Middle Ages. Western Greenland exhibited unusual warmth locally around 1000, and to lesser extent, around 1400, with quite cold conditions during the latter part of the 11th century, while Scandinavian summer temperatures appear to have been relatively warm only during the 11th and early 12th centuries. In Western and Central Europe the 13th century was the Medieval Warmth Period proper. On the European continent the warmth period was over sometime in the first half of the 14th century. In England and Iceland it outlasted the 14th century.The latest assessment report from the UN climate panel describes the long-term hemispheric trend as a modest and irregular cooling from 1000 to around 1850-1900, followed by an abrupt 20th century warming sometime after 1960. Recent estimates of the northern hemisphere mean temperature show temperatures from the 11th-14th centuries to be only about 0.2 degree celsius warmer than those from the 15th-19th centuries, but rather below mid 20th century temperatures. On the basis of these estimates it can hardly be argued that the long termed so called Medieval Warmth period is very important for our understanding of the development of Europe in the Middle Ages.The relatively short termed, extraordinary strong and geographically wide-ranging climatic anomalistic years were more important. These years caused famine, epidemics and demographic decline. Medieval chronicles and annals report countless famine years caused by bad weather. The most grave situations developed of course when the climate was unfavourable in more than one year - in most cases two or three years. But to generate catastrophic consequences a famine not only had to cover two or three years in succession it also had to cover a larger geographic area. Trade in grain and other victuals was quite developed in the Middle Ages, and in a critical situation relief could be found in imports from places not affected by unfavourable weather. Still, the importance of trade in victuals must indeed not be exaggerated.Comparing meteorological information in North European annals, chronicles, surveys, manorial accounts etc. this study shows that Denmark and the rest of Northern Europe was hit by general famine crises caused by bad weather two times in the 11th century, five times in 12th century, in the 1220s and in the second decade of the 14th century. Reports of such calamities ravaging Northern Europe have on the other hand not been found from 1320 to about 1500. Thus, the climate seems to have been a more severe adversary to man and human society in the High than in the Late Middle Ages

    Manorial Administration in Denmark in the Middle AgesThe formation of landed estates in Denmark was closely linked with ecclesiastical and monastic expansion. The earliest evidence of large landed properties is from the end of the eleventh century. Its accumulation was one of the characteristic traits of the Middle Ages, and by the end of the period Danish landed estates were concentrated in the hands of a very small number of proprietors. Various administrative methods were used in an attempt to optimise the utilization of these estates, which were the basic resource for the aristocracy's livelihood and activities. The aristocracy began consolidating their properties in the twelfth century, where we see the first signs of large-scale production in the 1130s. This development continued up through the High Middle Ages within the framework of a farming system, supplemented perhaps by direct management of a few estates. In the fourteenth century Danish manorial estates were comparable in size to those in the rest of Europe. In Denmark there are no traces of labour services during the High Middle Ages, but it was not insignificant in the fourteenth century. Labour service was as a rule linked to directly managed estates. The first Danish surveys mention unspecified labour services, week work, and boon services, but wage labour was an essential element in large-scale production in the High Middle Ages. With respect to labour services and wage labour, Danish manors in the fourteenth century were in principle operated no differently than English manors in the thirteenth century. The farming system was prevalent in the fourteenth century, but the large manors of the Bishop of Roskilde around that city and in eastern and northern Zealand were managed directly by the bishop's bailiffs. This was also true of Brink, the bishop of Ribe's manor near the coastal mudflats. The number of Danish manors declined in the Late Middle Ages, especially the smaller ones, and with it the frequency of farming. There thus emerges a clearer picture of a form of direct management comparable to what has been called the »classic« form of Western European large-scale manorial production based on labour services in the High Middle Ages. It should be stressed, however, that peasant farming was the predominant economic element in Denmark throughout the entire Middle Age period, also in the fourteenth century, when large-scale production was at its peak. In the Middle Ages the manorial landowner was more of a rentier than an administrator of his own lands.Translated by Michael Wolf
