Guantanamo and Beyond: Reflections on the Past, Present, and Future of Preventive Detention

    Get PDF
[Excerpt] “January 11, 2011 began the tenth year of existence of the detention center at the U.S. Naval Base at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba (“Guantanamo” or “GTMO”). In human-being terms, what this means is that large numbers of men have been detained by the U.S. military for almost a decade, in prison-like conditions, without trial. In a pre-9/11 world, a “Guantanamo” and the idea of “detention without trial” would have been seen as decidedly un-American and a violation of our democratic values. Over the last decade, however, Guantanamo” and the practice of long-term detention without trial for terrorism suspects (or, “preventive detention”), have evolved into institutions of American society that are now perfectly acceptable, indeed desirable to some, and of little concern to many. Indeed, how did we get here, and where are we going? Will the Guantanamo detention center close down in the near future or remain open, housing men indefinitely in the war against terrorism? More significantly, will preventive detention continue its current trajectory, becoming a permanent fixture in America’s national security landscape?

The comparative effects of liquid and dry milk on utilization of calcium and phosphorus by calves

    Get PDF
When the calf could nurse the cow and the farmer took what milk was left, few nutritional problems had to be contended with. When a good market for whole milk developed, dairymen began to use milk-replacer type feeds for calves, and many nutritional problems required attention. Most of the milk replacers are built around a milk product such as dried skim milk, dried buttermilk, or dried whey. These milk products may also be mixed with grain products and fed dry along with free access to hay and water. For younger calves the milk replacer is usually reconstituted to liquid form and fed from a bucket equipped with a nipple. Much research work has been done to develop rations that are suitable for calves and to compare these rations to whole milk or other milk products. However, very few reports have appeared in the literature which compare milk fed as a liquid to the same product fed in the dry form. Evidence has been pre-sented to show that most of the nursed liquid milk-by-passes the rumen via the esophageal groove, but milk fed in a dry meal goes first into the rumen. In the rumen the milk constituents could be changed in such a way that dry milk would differ nutritionally from milk fed as a liquid. In this investigation a comparison has been made of the utilization of calcium and phosphorus from reconstituted skim milk fed as a liquid with that from dry skim milk fed in a calf starter

Exploration of Small Fashion Retailers\u27 Green Efforts in Supply Chain Management and their Coping Strategies during COVID-19

The purpose of this paper is to explore the current business model of small fashion retailers and their green efforts in supply chain management based on the Six-R framework that consists of recycle, reuse, reduce, re-design, recovery, and remanufacture. This study also investigated the impact of COVID-19 on small fashion businesses. Qualitative data were gathered through in-depth interviews of owners/employees of four small fashion retailers that addressed sustainable supply chain management, customer segments, and challenges and barriers in green supply chain management, and the effects of COVID-19. Interview findings revealed that small fashion retailers are more likely to implement green supply chain practices through recycling, reusing, and reducing, while neglecting re-designing, re-imagining, and recovering. Using recyclable packaging and donating unused or unwanted clothing were the most frequent sustainable practices performed. Cost and lack of concern were the reasons for not employing green practices. COVID-19 pushed the retailers to deal with their problems in new and creative ways but was hurtful for the businesses overall. The findings suggest that small retailers are more likely to employ green supply chain management when it aligns with their business values. Therefore, retailers must prioritize being environmentally friendly, as more sustainable practices occur when that is the case. Future success of retailing could be determined by sales, innovation, and creating a community

Students were asked to “give psychology away” through an infographic designed to educate an audience of their choice about an idea from social psychology that the group would benefit from understanding. TOPIC: self-esteem. AUDIENCE: women with low self-esteem

Cardiac vagal tone in complex PTSD : a polyvagal perspective.

    Get PDF
Differences in functionality, impairment, and symptoms provide support for a nosological distinction between Complex PTSD and PTSD. Based on this information, the next step is to examine biological characteristics between the populations, thus bolstering the evidence supporting the uniqueness of these symptom expressions and associated etiologies. The proposed study is the first of its kind to do this, by examining theoretically derived potential differences between these populations. This investigation proposes the polyvagal theory as a comprehensive model through which one can examine psychological and physiological differences to demonstrate a systemic perspective of Complex PTSD. The primary distinguishing characteristic of Complex PTSD is the global symptom expression, disrupting multiple domains of functionality - relationships, emotions, and self-perception. From a polyvagal perspective, interpersonal problems and affect dysregulation are described by the same affective system -faulty neuroception, causing dysregulation in the hierarchical behavioral strategies. Physiologically, this dysregulation removes the neural inhibitory mechanism (cardiac vagal tone or vagal brake), while promoting one of the primal defensive strategies as autonomic regulator. Observations of the cardiopulmonary oscillator was expected to reveal differences between Complex PTSD, PTSD, and control samples. Hypotheses were confirmed, indicating that vagal brake does not reengage in the post-task resting period in the clinical groups, Complex PTSD and PTSD. Moreover, average RSA is lowest in the Complex PTSD group, as anticipated, given the severe affect dysregulation and social dysfunction evident in the symptomology
