Financial Sector Reforms and International Trade Competitiveness: A Case Study of Pakistan
This paper explores the relationship between financial development and international trade competitiveness in the case of Pakistan. An earlier study on this issue, Hanif and Jafri (2008), has some empirical limitations as it is based on Engle-Granger (1987) two steps procedure while dealing with multiple variables regressions. In this study we have used ARDL model by Pesaran, Shin and Smith (1999). We have also applied Johansen test for cointegration and checked the robustness of results established by the ARDL model. We have estimated the cointegration vector using Stock and Watson (1993) dynamic OLS method. We find a stable long run positive relationship between international trade competitiveness of Pakistan and its financial sector development. The estimated external finance elasticity of international trade competitiveness of textile sector in Pakistan is found to be 0.26 which is significantly higher than 0.17 estimated by Hanif and Jafri (2008).Financial Development, Competitiveness
Background independent quantization and the uncertainty principle
It is shown that polymer quantization leads to a modified uncertainty
principle similar to that obtained from string theory and non-commutative
geometry. When applied to quantum field theory on general background
spacetimes, corrections to the uncertainty principle acquire a metric
dependence. For Friedmann-Robertson-Walker cosmology this translates to a scale
factor dependence which gives a large effect in the early universe.Comment: 6 page
The Husain-Kuchar Model: Time Variables and Non-degenerate Metrics
We study the Husain-Kuchar model by introducing a new action principle
similar to the self-dual action used in the Ashtekar variables approach to
Quantum Gravity. This new action has several interesting features; among them,
the presence of a scalar time variable that allows the definition of geometric
observables without adding new degrees of freedom, the appearance of a natural
non-degenerate four-metric and the possibility of coupling ordinary matter.Comment: LaTeX, 22 pages, accepted for publication in Phys. Rev.
An audit on hospital management of bronchial asthma
Medical audit is a new concept in developing countries like Pakistan. We carried out this retrospective study on bronchial asthma. The purpose was to see if care given to patient with asthma meets the accepted international standard or not. During this audit several deficiencies were found. Documentation in notes about signs indicating severity of asthma was very poor. Peak flow recording in the notes was also very deficient. There was no documentation in notes whether inhalers technique of the patients has been checked or not. This audit shows that care given to asthma patients is far from satisfactory and we clearly need to improve in order to reach the accepted international standards
Perancangan Database Relational Pada Toko Buku Online
Journal report titled "Designing Database at Online Bookstore" Task Journal report aims to design a database to facilitate the process of buying and selling online for consumers. Besides the new system design is also done with the preparation of the overall system that consists of data normalization, ERD, database file. The methodology of the research is includes field studies and literature. Field studies include observations, interviews. Literature study is being conducted by the research literature relevant to the problem. Once the global design is finished it can be seen that report generation earlier with manual processes by collecting data one by one so that the time allowed is not enough, then the procurement database design report will be easier
Perceptions of the policing and crime mapping ‘Trailblazers’, Home Office Research Report 67
The research involved interviews with key staff involved and focus groups with members of the public to explore their views and opinions on the initiatives.
The research highlights considerable public curiosity, and to an extent an appetite, for crime and criminal justice information. However a key message from the research was that providing more information should not be an end in itself. Information needs to be relevant, useable, of high quality and tailored to suit its purpose, whether that is crime prevention or holding the police to account
Smoking prevalence, knowledge and attitudes among medical students in Karachi, Pakistan
A survey of smoking prevalence and attitudes was made among medical students randomly selected from classes at the Aga Khan University, Karachi, Pakistan. Of 271 respondents, 14.4% were current smokers (22.0% male and 3.8% females) and 3.3% ex-smokers. A majority of students recognized the dangers associated with active as well as passive smoking although only 55% of current smokers planned to quit in the near future. Most smokers (96%) believed that they as well as other health professionals needed training on smoking cessation and 95% of all students believed that doctors should play a role model in smoking cessation by not smoking themselves. Specific training and counselling should be a part of the required curriculum at medical schools
Coupling a Point-Like Mass to Quantum Gravity with Causal Dynamical Triangulations
We present a possibility of coupling a point-like, non-singular, mass
distribution to four-dimensional quantum gravity in the nonperturbative setting
of causal dynamical triangulations (CDT). In order to provide a point of
comparison for the classical limit of the matter-coupled CDT model, we derive
the spatial volume profile of the Euclidean Schwarzschild-de Sitter space glued
to an interior matter solution. The volume profile is calculated with respect
to a specific proper-time foliation matching the global time slicing present in
CDT. It deviates in a characteristic manner from that of the pure-gravity
model. The appearance of coordinate caustics and the compactness of the mass
distribution in lattice units put an upper bound on the total mass for which
these calculations are expected to be valid. We also discuss some of the
implementation details for numerically measuring the expectation value of the
volume profiles in the framework of CDT when coupled appropriately to the
matter source.Comment: 26 pages, 9 figures, updated published versio
Scalar Wave Falloff in Asymptotically Anti-de Sitter Backgrounds
Conformally invariant scalar waves in black hole spacetimes which are
asymptotically anti-de Sitter are investigated. We consider both the
-dimensional black hole and -dimensional Schwarzschild-anti-de
Sitter spacetime as backgrounds. Analytical and numerical methods show that the
waves decay exponentially in the dimensional black hole background.
However the falloff pattern of the conformal scalar waves in the
Schwarzschild-anti-de Sitter background is generally neither exponential nor an
inverse power rate, although the approximate falloff of the maximal peak is
weakly exponential. We discuss the implications of these results for mass
inflation.Comment: 34 pages, Latex, 26 figures, uses psfi
