Scalability considerations for multivariate graph visualization
Real-world, multivariate datasets are frequently too large to show in their entirety on a visual display. Still, there are many techniques we can employ to show useful partial views-sufficient to support incremental exploration of large graph datasets. In this chapter, we first explore the cognitive and architectural limitations which restrict the amount of visual bandwidth available to multivariate graph visualization approaches. These limitations afford several design approaches, which we systematically explore. Finally, we survey systems and studies that exhibit these design strategies to mitigate these perceptual and architectural limitations
Application opportunities of geographic information systems analysis to support achievement of the UNAIDS 90-90-90 targets in South Africa
In an effort to achieve control of the HIV epidemic, 90-90-90 targets have been proposed whereby 90% of the HIV-infected population should know their status, 90% of those diagnosed should be receiving antiretroviral therapy, and 90% of those on treatment should be virologically suppressed. In this article we present approaches for using relatively simple geographic information systems (GIS) analyses of routinely available data to support HIV programme management towards achieving the 90-90-90 targets, with a focus on South Africa (SA) and other high-prevalence settings in low- and middle-income countries. We present programme-level GIS applications to map aggregated health data and individual-level applications to track distinct patients. We illustrate these applications using data from City of Johannesburg Region D, demonstrating that GIS has great potential to guide HIV programme operations and assist in achieving the 90-90-90 targets in SA
Peacock Bundles: Bundle Coloring for Graphs with Globality-Locality Trade-off
Bundling of graph edges (node-to-node connections) is a common technique to
enhance visibility of overall trends in the edge structure of a large graph
layout, and a large variety of bundling algorithms have been proposed. However,
with strong bundling, it becomes hard to identify origins and destinations of
individual edges. We propose a solution: we optimize edge coloring to
differentiate bundled edges. We quantify strength of bundling in a flexible
pairwise fashion between edges, and among bundled edges, we quantify how
dissimilar their colors should be by dissimilarity of their origins and
destinations. We solve the resulting nonlinear optimization, which is also
interpretable as a novel dimensionality reduction task. In large graphs the
necessary compromise is whether to differentiate colors sharply between locally
occurring strongly bundled edges ("local bundles"), or also between the weakly
bundled edges occurring globally over the graph ("global bundles"); we allow a
user-set global-local tradeoff. We call the technique "peacock bundles".
Experiments show the coloring clearly enhances comprehensibility of graph

When Paper Meets Multi-touch: A Study of Multi-modal Interactions in Air Traffic Control
Part 1: Long and Short Papers (Continued); International audience; For expert interfaces, it is not obvious whether providing multiple modes of interaction, each tuned to different sub-tasks, leads to a better user experience than providing a more limited set. In this paper, we investigate this question in the context of air traffic control. We present and analyze an augmented flight strip board offering several forms of interaction, including touch, digital pen and physical paper objects. We explore the technical challenges of adding finger detection to such a flight strip board and evaluate how expert air traffic controllers interact with the resulting system. We find that users are able to quickly adapt to the wide range of offered modalities. Users were not overburden by the choice of different modalities, and did not find it difficult to determine the appropriate modality to use for each interaction.

Palynostratigraphy and Bayesian Age Stratigraphic Model of New CA-ID-TIMS Zircon Ages from the Walloon Coal Measures, Surat Basin, Australia
The Surat Basin hosts significant coal and coal seam gas resources. New high-precision CA-TIMS U/Pb zircon ages from tuffs and Bayesian age stratigraphic models are combined with palynology from fine-grained sedimentary rocks and zircon trace elements to provide further chronostratigraphic and biostratigraphic constrains on the Walloon Coal Measures in the eastern margin of the Surat Basin and infer the palaeoenvironment and tectonic setting. The tuff ages range from 165.88 ± 0.11 Ma to 158.84 ± 0.05 Ma, with those from the stratigraphically lower Taroom Coal Measures ranging from 165.88 ± 0.11 to 163.05 ± 0.08 Ma and Juandah Coal Measures ranging from 159.91 ± 0.04 to 158.84 ± 0.05 Ma. This corroborates that the lower part of the Walloon Coal Measures is Callovian and the upper part is Oxfordian. The palynology results from mudstones show that all samples are dominated by microfossils of spore-pollen with conifers being the most abundant. Our samples fall withinPrice’s (1997) stratigraphic zonation of APJ4.2 and APJ4.3. Posterior ages for palynology samples were estimated through Bayesian age stratigraphic modelling using stratigraphic depths and U-Pb zircon ages. The palaeoenvironment in the eastern portion of the basin is inferred to be predominantly fluvial, with spores and pollen derived from fresh water or terrestrial plants. Higher concentrations of green algae in one sample suggest that at times the water was somewhat stagnant. The zircons were derived from predominantly intermediate magmas, as indicated by the generally low Ti, Ta, and Nb values. The tectonic environment that the zircons were derived from was most likely a continental subduction zone due to their high U/Yb, low Nb/Yb and relatively low Hf concentrations. These new data support previous conclusions of the Surat Basin palaeoenvironment, contribute to the ongoing discussion about the tectonic setting of the basin and add new regional age marker horizons
Gazealytics: A Unified and Flexible Visual Toolkit for Exploratory and Comparative Gaze Analysis
We present a novel, web-based visual eye-tracking analytics tool called
Gazealytics. Our open-source toolkit features a unified combination of gaze
analytics features that support flexible exploratory analysis, along with
annotation of areas of interest (AOI) and filter options based on multiple
criteria to visually analyse eye tracking data across time and space.
Gazealytics features coordinated views unifying spatiotemporal exploration of
fixations and scanpaths for various analytical tasks. A novel matrix
representation allows analysis of relationships between such spatial or
temporal features. Data can be grouped across samples, user-defined AOIs or
time windows of interest (TWIs) to support aggregate or filtered analysis of
gaze activity. This approach exceeds the capabilities of existing systems by
supporting flexible comparison between and within subjects, hypothesis
generation, data analysis and communication of insights. We demonstrate in a
walkthrough that Gazealytics supports multiple types of eye tracking datasets
and analytical tasks

Tujuan penelitian ini adalah: (1) Menyelidiki pengaruh jumlah blade pada
turbin angin non-twisted blade tipe airfoil NACA 4415 terhadap daya listrik yang
dihasilkan. (2) Menyelidiki pengaruh penambahan lensa nozzle pada turbin angin
non-twisted blade tipe airfoil NACA 4415 terhadap daya listrik yang dihasilkan
turbin angin. (3) Menyelidiki pengaruh bersama (interaksi) antara penambahan
lensa nozzle dan jumlah blade terhadap daya listrik yang dihasilkan turbin angin.
Penelitian ini menggunakan metode deskriptif kuantitatif. Sampel dalam
penelitian ini adalah Turbin Angin Sumbu Horisontal (TASH) dengan desain blade
airfoil NACA 4415 non-twisted. 3 desain lensa nozzle digunakan untuk mengetahui
pengaruhnya terhadap peningkatan daya listrik TASH. Terdapat 3 variasi jumlah
blade yaitu jumlah blade 2, jumlah blade 3, dan jumlah blade 4. Variasi kecepatan
angin yang digunakan dalam penelitian ini adalah 2,5 m/s, 3,5 m/s, dan 4,5 m/s.
Data diperoleh dengan melakukan pengujian TASH menggunakan angin rekayasa,
daya listrik yang dihasilkan dibaca dan direkam oleh data logger. Data yang
diperoleh dari hasil penelitian dimasukkan ke dalam tabel dan ditampilkan dalam
bentuk grafik, kemudian dianalisis.
Berdasarkan hasil penelitian dapat disimpulkan bahwa: (1) Adanya
pengaruh variasi jumlah blade terhadap daya listrik turbin angin. TASH 3 blade
menghasilkan daya listrik yang paling besar yaitu 0,7222 W pada kecepatan angin
4,5 m/s. (2) Adanya pengaruh penambahan lensa nozzle terhadap turbin angin.
Lensa nozzle mampu meningkatkan hasil daya listrik turbin angin semua jenis
variasi jumlah blade dibandingkan turbin angin tanpa lensa nozzle. (3) Ada
pengaruh bersama yang signifikan antara variasi jumlah blade dan variasi jenis
lensa terhadap daya listrik turbin angin. TASH 3 blade dengan lensa C pada
kecepatan angin 4,5 m/s memiliki daya listrik tertinggi yaitu sebesar 0,82041 W.
Daya listrik tersebut meningkat 13,60% dibanding TASH 3 blade tanpa
penambahan lensa, yaitu 0,7222 W.

A discrete firefly algorithm to solve a rich vehicle routing problem modelling a newspaper distribution system with recycling policy
A real-world newspaper distribution problem with recycling policy is tackled in this work. In order to meet all the complex restrictions contained in such a problem, it has been modeled as a rich vehicle routing problem, which can be more specifically considered as an asymmetric and clustered vehicle routing problem with simultaneous pickup and deliveries, variable costs and forbidden paths (AC-VRP-SPDVCFP). This is the first study of such a problem in the literature. For this reason, a benchmark composed by 15 instances has been also proposed. In the design of this benchmark, real geographical positions have been used, located in the province of Bizkaia, Spain. For the proper treatment of this AC-VRP-SPDVCFP, a discrete firefly algorithm (DFA) has been developed. This application is the first application of the firefly algorithm to any rich vehicle routing problem. To prove that the proposed DFA is a promising technique, its performance has been compared with two other well-known techniques: an evolutionary algorithm and an evolutionary simulated annealing.
