Rlp7p is associated with 60S preribosomes, restricted to the granular component of the nucleolus, and required for pre-rRNA processing
Many analyses have examined subnucleolar structures in eukaryotic cells, but the relationship between morphological structures, pre-rRNA processing, and ribosomal particle assembly has remained unclear. Using a visual assay for export of the 60S ribosomal subunit, we isolated a ts-lethal mutation, rix9-1, which causes nucleolar accumulation of an Rpl25p-eGFP reporter construct. The mutation results in a single amino acid substitution (F(176)S) in Rlp7p, an essential nucleolar protein related to ribosomal protein Rpl7p. The rix9-1 (rlp7-1) mutation blocks the late pre-RNA cleavage at site C(2) in ITS2, which separates the precursors to the 5.8S and 25S rRNAs. Consistent with this, synthesis of the mature 5.8S and 25S rRNAs was blocked in the rlp7-1 strain at nonpermissive temperature, whereas 18S rRNA synthesis continued. Moreover, pre-rRNA containing ITS2 accumulates in the nucleolus of rix9-1 cells as revealed by in situ hybridization. Finally, tagged Rlp7p was shown to associate with a pre-60S particle, and fluorescence microscopy and immuno-EM localized Rlp7p to a subregion of the nucleolus, which could be the granular component (GC). All together, these data suggest that pre-rRNA cleavage at site C(2) specifically requires Rlp7p and occurs within pre-60S particles located in the GC region of the nucleolus
Biogenesis of mitochondrial porin
We review here the present knowledge about the pathway of import and assembly of porin into mitochondria and compare it to those of other mitochondrial proteins. Porin, like all outer mitochondrial membrane proteins studied so far is made as a precursor without a cleavble lsquosignalrsquo sequence; thus targeting information must reside in the mature sequence. At least part of this information appears to be located at the amino-terminal end of the molecule. Transport into mitochondria can occur post-translationally. In a first step, the porin precursor is specifically recognized on the mitochondrial surface by a protease sensitive receptor. In a second step, porin precursor inserts partially into the outer membrane. This step is mediated by a component of the import machinery common to the import pathways of precursor proteins destined for other mitochondrial subcompartments. Finally, porin is assembled to produce the functional oligomeric form of an integral membrane protein wich is characterized by its extreme protease resistance
Robin conditions on the Euclidean ball
Techniques are presented for calculating directly the scalar functional
determinant on the Euclidean d-ball. General formulae are given for Dirichlet
and Robin boundary conditions. The method involves a large mass asymptotic
limit which is carried out in detail for d=2 and d=4 incidentally producing
some specific summations and identities. Extensive use is made of the

Nuclear Bar Catalyzed Star Formation: 13^CO, C18^O and Molecular Gas Properties in the Nucleus of Maffei 2
(Abridged) We present resolution maps of CO, its isotopologues, and HCN from
in the center of Maffei 2. The J=1-0 rotational lines of 12^CO, 13^CO, C18^O
and HCN, and the J=2-1 lines of 13^CO and C18^O were observed with the OVRO and
BIMA arrays. The 2-1/1-0 line ratios of the isotopologues constrain the bulk of
the molecular gas to originate in low excitation, subthermal gas. From LVG
modeling, we infer that the central GMCs have n(H_2) ~10^2.75 cm^-3 and T_k ~
30 K. Continuum emission at 3.4 mm, 2.7 mm and 1.4 mm was mapped to determine
the distribution and amount of HII regions and dust. Column densities derived
from C18^O and 1.4 mm dust continuum fluxes indicate the CO conversion factor
in the center of Maffei 2 is lower than Galactic by factors of ~2-4. Gas
morphology and the clear ``parallelogram'' in the Position-Velocity diagram
shows that molecular gas orbits within the potential of a nuclear (~220 pc)
bar. The nuclear bar is distinct from the bar that governs the large scale
morphology of Maffei 2. Giant molecular clouds in the nucleus are nonspherical
and have large linewidths. Dense gas and star formation are concentrated at the
sites of the x_1-x_2 orbit intersections of the nuclear bar, suggesting that

Long-term results and recurrence patterns from SCALOP: a phase II randomised trial of gemcitabine- or capecitabine-based chemoradiation for locally advanced pancreatic cancer
background: SCALOP, a randomised, phase II trial, tested the activity and safety of gemcitabine (GEM)-based and capecitabine (CAP)-based chemoradiation (CRT) for locally advanced pancreatic cancer (LAPC). Here we present the long-term outcomes.
methods: Eligibility: histologically proven LAPC less than or equal to7 cm. Following 12 weeks of induction GEMCAP chemotherapy (three cycles: GEM 1000 mg m−2 days 1, 8, 15; CAP 830 mg m−2 days 1–21 q28 days) patients with stable/responding disease, tumour less than or equal to6 cm, and WHO Performance Status 0–1 were randomised to receive one cycle GEMCAP followed by CAP (830 mg m−2 b.d. on weekdays only) or GEM (300 mg m−2 weekly) with radiation (50.4 Gy per 28 fractions).
results: One-hundred fourteen patients (28 UK centres) were registered between 24 December 2009 and 25 October 2011, and 74 were randomised (CAP-RT=36; GEM-RT=38). At the time of this analysis, 105 of the 114 patients had died and the surviving 9 patients had been followed up for a median of 10.9 months (IQR: 2.9–18.7). Updated median OS was 17.6 months (95% CI: 14.6–22.7) in the CAP-CRT arm and 14.6 months (95% CI: 11.1–16.0) in the GEM-CRT arm (intention-to-treat adjusted hazard ratio (HR): 0.68 (95% CI: 0.38–1.21, P=0.185)); median progression-free survival (PFS) was 12.0 months (95% CI: 10.0–15.2) in the CAP-CRT arm and 10.4 months (95% CI: 8.8–12.7) in the GEM-CRT arm (intention-to-treat adjusted HR: 0.60 (95% CI: 0.32–1.14, P=0.120)). In baseline multivariable model, age greater than or equal to65 years, better performance status, CA19.9<613 IU l−1, and shorter tumour diameter predicted improved OS. CAP-CRT, age greater than or equal to65 years, better performance status, CA19.9 <46 IU ml−1 predicted improved OS and PFS in the pre-radiotherapy model. Nine-month PFS was highly predictive of OS.
conclusions: CAP-CRT remains the superior regimen. SCALOP showed that patients with CA19.9 <46 IU ml−1 after induction chemotherapy are more likely to benefit from CRT

Development of a Weldable Neutron Absorbing Structural Material
The National Spent Nuclear Fuel Program, located at the Idaho National Laboratory, coordinates and integrates national efforts in management and disposal of U.S. Department of Energy (DOE)-owned spent nuclear fuel. These management functions include development of standardized systems for packaging, storage, treatment, transport, and long-term disposal in the proposed Yucca Mountain Repository. Nuclear criticality control measures are needed in these systems to avoid restrictive fissile loading limits because of the enrichment and total quantity of fissile material in some types of the DOE spent nuclear fuel. This paper will outline the results to date of a metallurgical development program that is investigating the alloying of gadolinium into a nickel-chromium-molybdenum alloy matrix. Gadolinium has been chosen as the neutron absorption alloying element due to its high thermal neutron absorption cross section and low solubility in the expected repository environment. The nickel-chromium-molybdenum alloy family was chosen for its known corrosion performance, mechanical properties, and weldability. The workflow of this program includes chemical composition definition, primary melting and secondary refining studies, ingot conversion process evaluations, mechanical/physical properties and corrosion testing, welding studies, and national consensus codes, and standards work
Galaxies behind the Galactic plane: First results and perspectives from the VVV Survey
Vista Variables in The Via Lactea (VVV) is an ESO variability survey that is
performing observations in near infrared bands (ZYJHKs) towards the Galactic
bulge and part of the disk with the completeness limits at least 3 mag deeper
than 2MASS. In the present work, we searched in the VVV survey data for
background galaxies near the Galactic plane using ZYJHKs photometry that covers
1.636 square degrees. We identified 204 new galaxy candidates by analyzing
colors, sizes, and visual inspection of multi-band (ZYJHKs) images. The galaxy
candidates colors were also compared with the predicted ones by star counts
models considering a more realistic extinction model at the same completeness
limits observed by VVV. A comparison of the galaxy candidates with the expected
one by Milennium simulations is also presented. Our results increase the number
density of known galaxies behind the Milky Way by more than one order of
magnitude. A catalog with galaxy properties including ellipticity, Petrosian
radii and ZYJHKs magnitudes is provided, as well as comparisons of the results

Realization of compact Lie algebras in K\"ahler manifolds
The Berezin quantization on a simply connected homogeneous K\"{a}hler
manifold, which is considered as a phase space for a dynamical system, enables
a description of the quantal system in a (finite-dimensional) Hilbert space of
holomorphic functions corresponding to generalized coherent states. The Lie
algebra associated with the manifold symmetry group is given in terms of
first-order differential operators. In the classical theory, the Lie algebra is
represented by the momentum maps which are functions on the manifold, and the
Lie product is the Poisson bracket given by the K\"{a}hler structure. The
K\"{a}hler potentials are constructed for the manifolds related to all compact
semi-simple Lie groups. The complex coordinates are introduced by means of the
Borel method. The K\"{a}hler structure is obtained explicitly for any unitary
group representation. The cocycle functions for the Lie algebra and the Killing
vector fields on the manifold are also obtained

Near and Mid-IR Photometry of the Pleiades, and a New List of Substellar Candidate Members
We make use of new near and mid-IR photometry of the Pleiades cluster in
order to help identify proposed cluster members. We also use the new photometry
with previously published photometry to define the single-star main sequence
locus at the age of the Pleiades in a variety of color-magnitude planes.
The new near and mid-IR photometry extend effectively two magnitudes deeper
than the 2MASS All-Sky Point Source catalog, and hence allow us to select a new
set of candidate very low mass and sub-stellar mass members of the Pleiades in
the central square degree of the cluster. We identify 42 new candidate members
fainter than Ks =14 (corresponding to 0.1 Mo). These candidate members should
eventually allow a better estimate of the cluster mass function to be made down
to of order 0.04 solar masses.
We also use new IRAC data, in particular the images obtained at 8 um, in
order to comment briefly on interstellar dust in and near the Pleiades. We
confirm, as expected, that -- with one exception -- a sample of low mass stars
recently identified as having 24 um excesses due to debris disks do not have
significant excesses at IRAC wavelengths. However, evidence is also presented
that several of the Pleiades high mass stars are found to be impacting with
local condensations of the molecular cloud that is passing through the Pleiades
