A Novel Method for Epileptic Seizure Detection Using Coupled Hidden Markov Models
We propose a novel Coupled Hidden Markov Model to detect epileptic seizures
in multichannel electroencephalography (EEG) data. Our model defines a network
of seizure propagation paths to capture both the temporal and spatial evolution
of epileptic activity. To address the intractability introduced by the coupled
interactions, we derive a variational inference procedure to efficiently infer
the seizure evolution from spectral patterns in the EEG data. We validate our
model on EEG aquired under clinical conditions in the Epilepsy Monitoring Unit
of the Johns Hopkins Hospital. Using 5-fold cross validation, we demonstrate
that our model outperforms three baseline approaches which rely on a classical
detection framework. Our model also demonstrates the potential to localize
seizure onset zones in focal epilepsy.Comment: To appear in MICCAI 2018 Proceeding
Dynamic scaling of fronts in the quantum XX chain
The dynamics of the transverse magnetization in the zero-temperature XX chain
is studied with emphasis on fronts emerging from steplike initial magnetization
profiles. The fronts move with fixed velocity and display a staircase like
internal structure whose dynamic scaling is explored both analytically and
numerically. The front region is found to spread with time sub-diffusively with
the height and the width of the staircase steps scaling as t^(-1/3) and t^1/3,
respectively. The areas under the steps are independent of time, thus the
magnetization relaxes in quantized "steps" of spin-flips.Comment: 4 pages, 3 eps figures, RevTe
Direct proton decay of the isoscalar giant dipole resonance in 208Pb
The excitation and subsequent proton decay of the isoscalar giant dipole
resonance (ISGDR) in Pb have been investigated via the
Pb(Tl reaction at 400 MeV. Excitation
of the ISGDR has been identified by the difference-of-spectra method. The
enhancement of the ISGDR strength at high excitation energies observed in the
multipole-decomposition-analysis of the singles
Pb() spectra is not present in the excitation
energy spectrum obtained in coincidence measurement. The partial branching
ratios for direct proton decay of ISGDR to low-lying states of Tl have
been determined and the results are compared with predictions of continuum
random-phase-approximation (CRPA) calculations.Comment: 12 pages, 4 figures; accepted for publication in Physics Letters
Polarization Correlations of 1S0 Proton Pairs as Tests of Bell and Wigner Inequalities
In an experiment designed to overcome the loophole of observer dependent
reality and satisfying the counterfactuality condition, we measured
polarization correlations of 1S0 proton pairs produced in 12C(d,2He) and
1H(d,He) reactions in one setting. The results of these measurements are used
to test the Bell and Wigner inequalties against the predictions of quantum
mechanics.Comment: 8 pages, 4 figure
Proton decay from the isoscalar giant dipole resonance in Ni
Proton decay from the 3 isoscalar giant dipole resonance (ISGDR)
in Ni has been measured using the () reaction at a
bombarding energy of 386 MeV to investigate its decay properties. We have
extracted the ISGDR strength under the coincidence condition between
inelastically scattered particles at forward angles and decay protons
emitted at backward angles. Branching ratios for proton decay to low-lying
states of Co have been determined, and the results compared to
predictions of recent continuum-RPA calculations. The final-state spectra of
protons decaying to the low-lying states in Co were analyzed for a more
detailed understanding of the structure of the ISGDR. It is found that there
are differences in the structure of the ISGDR as a function of excitation
energy.Comment: Minor changes after review. Accepted for publication in Phys. Rev. C.

Low-lying GT(+) strength in Co-64 studied via the Ni-64(d,He-2)Co-64 reaction
The Ni-64(d,He-2)Co-64 reaction was studied at the AGOR cyclotron of KVI, Groningen, with the Big-Bite Spectrometer and the EuroSuperNova detector using a 171-MeV deuteron beam. An energy resolution of about 110 keV was achieved. In addition to the J(pi) = 1(+) ground state, several other 1(+) states could be identified in Co-64 and the strengths of the corresponding Gamow-Teller transitions were determined. The obtained strength distribution was compared with theoretical predictions and former (n,p) experimental results and displayed a good agreement. Due to the good energy resolution, detailed spectroscopic information was obtained, which supplements the data base needed for network calculations for supernova scenarios
Alpha-decay branching ratios of near-threshold states in 19Ne and the astrophysical rate of 15O(alpha,gamma)19Ne
The 15O(alpha,gamma)19Ne reaction is one of two routes for breakout from the
hot CNO cycles into the rp process in accreting neutron stars. Its
astrophysical rate depends critically on the decay properties of excited states
in 19Ne lying just above the 15O + alpha threshold. We have measured the
alpha-decay branching ratios for these states using the p(21Ne,t)19Ne reaction
at 43 MeV/u. Combining our measurements with previous determinations of the
radiative widths of these states, we conclude that no significant breakout from
the hot CNO cycle into the rp process in novae is possible via
15O(alpha,gamma)19Ne, assuming current models accurately represent their
temperature and density conditions
A multi-detector array for high energy nuclear e+e- pair spectrosocopy
A multi-detector array has been constructed for the simultaneous measurement
of energy- and angular correlation of electron-positron pairs produced in
internal pair conversion (IPC) of nuclear transitions up to 18 MeV. The
response functions of the individual detectors have been measured with
mono-energetic beams of electrons. Experimental results obtained with 1.6 MeV
protons on targets containing B and F show clear IPC over a wide
angular range. A comparison with GEANT simulations demonstrates that angular
correlations of pairs of transitions in the energy range between 6 and
18 MeV can be determined with sufficient resolution and efficiency to search
for deviations from IPC due to the creation and subsequent decay into
of a hypothetical short-lived neutral boson.Comment: 20 pages, 8 figure
Terrestrial planet finder interferometer: 2006-2007 progress and plans
This paper provides an overview of technology development for the Terrestrial Planet Finder Interferometer (TPF-I). TPF-I is a mid-infrared space interferometer being designed with the capability of detecting Earth-like planets in the habitable zones around nearby stars. The overall technology roadmap is presented and progress with each of the testbeds is summarized. The current interferometer architecture, design trades, and the viability of possible reduced-scope mission concepts are also presented
