    A fast 3-D object recognition algorithm for the vision system of a special-purpose dexterous manipulator

    A fast 3-D object recognition algorithm that can be used as a quick-look subsystem to the vision system for the Special-Purpose Dexterous Manipulator (SPDM) is described. Global features that can be easily computed from range data are used to characterize the images of a viewer-centered model of an object. This algorithm will speed up the processing by eliminating the low level processing whenever possible. It may identify the object, reject a set of bad data in the early stage, or create a better environment for a more powerful algorithm to carry the work further

    EFFECT OF ANKLE TAPING ON STANDING BALANCE IN THE INDIVIDUALS WITH FUNCTIONAL ANKLE INSTABILITY

    Ankle sprain is one of the most common sport injuries in athletes. Based on the epidemiologic investigation (Bahr, 1997), the injury rate of ankle sprain could be 54% in volleyball players, indicating that more than half of the volleyball players has been suffering ankle sprain. The rate of recurrent ankle sprain could be as high as 79% in the volleyball players with ankle sprain. Also, ankle sprain is a common sports injury that can cause significant and chronic disability. Functional instability of the ankle has been defined as a tendency for the foot to give away after an ankle sprain. Such instability is a relatively widespread concern following the acute ankle sprain, persisting as a chronic condition long after the apparent signs and symptoms of the original insult have resolved. Ankle taping has become one of the major interventions in athletic training and is often used for rehabilitation and/or prevention of ankle sprains. Orthotic devices have been shown to effectively modify selected aspects of lower extremity mechanics and improve foot stability during the stance phase of running (Guskiewicz, 1996). Ankle function and muscle coordination after the ankle sprain have been documented (Fu, 2005). However, very little study has been done focusing on the effect of ankle taping on balance control in the individuals with recurrent ankle sprains.     Approximate gauge symmetry of composite vector bosons

    It can be shown in a solvable field theory model that the couplings of the composite vector bosons made of a fermion pair approach the gauge couplings in the limit of strong binding. Although this phenomenon may appear accidental and special to the vector boson made of a fermion pair, we extend it to the case of bosons being constituents and find that the same phenomenon occurs in more an intriguing way. The functional formalism not only facilitates computation but also provides us with a better insight into the generating mechanism of approximate gauge symmetry, in particular, how the strong binding and global current conservation conspire to generate such an approximate symmetry.     Highly Sensitive Centrality Dependence of Elliptic Flow -- A Novel Signature of the Phase Transition in QCD

    Elliptic flow of the hot, dense system which has been created in nucleus-nucleus collisions develops as a response to the initial azimuthal asymmetry of the reaction region. Here it is suggested that the magnitude of this response shows a ``kinky'' dependence on the centrality of collisions for which the system passes through a first-order or rapid transition between quark-gluon plasma and hadronic matter. We have studied the system Pb(158AGeV) on Pb employing a recent version of the transport theoretical approach RQMD and find the conjecture confirmed.     Transcriptional Response of Selenopolypeptide Genes and Selenocysteine Biosynthesis Machinery Genes in Escherichia coli during Selenite Reduction

    This work was supported by a United States Department of Agriculture-Cooperative State Research, Education, and Extension Service grant (no. 2009-35318-05032), a Biotechnology Research grant (no. 2007-BRG-1223) from the North Carolina Biotechnology Center, and a startup fund from the Golden LEAF Foundation to the Biomanufacturing Research Institute and Technology Enterprise (BRITE).Bacteria can reduce toxic selenite into less toxic, elemental selenium (Se0), but the mechanism on how bacterial cells reduce selenite at molecular level is still not clear. We used Escherichia coli strain K12, a common bacterial strain, as a model to study its growth response to sodium selenite (Na2SeO3) treatment and then used quantitative real-time PCR (qRT-PCR) to quantify transcript levels of three E. coli selenopolypeptide genes and a set of machinery genes for selenocysteine (SeCys) biosynthesis and incorporation into polypeptides, whose involvements in the selenite reduction are largely unknown. We determined that 5 mM Na2SeO3 treatment inhibited growth by ∼50% while 0.001 to 0.01 mM treatments stimulated cell growth by ∼30%. Under 50% inhibitory or 30% stimulatory Na2SeO3 concentration, selenopolypeptide genes (fdnG, fdoG, and fdhF) whose products require SeCys but not SeCys biosynthesis machinery genes were found to be induced ≥2-fold. In addition, one sulfur (S) metabolic gene iscS and two previously reported selenite-responsive genes sodA and gutS were also induced ≥2-fold under 50% inhibitory concentration. Our findings provide insight about the detoxification of selenite in E. coli via induction of these genes involved in the selenite reduction process.Publisher PDFPeer reviewe
