    Emotion regulation from a virtue perspective

    Background The ability to regulate oneā€™s emotional state is an important predictor of several behaviors such as reframing a challenging situation to reduce anger or anxiety, concealing visible signs of sadness or fear, or focusing on reasons to feel happy or calm. This capacity is referred to as emotion regulation. Deficits in this ability can adversely affect oneā€™s adaptive coping, thus are associated with a variety of other psychopathological symptoms, including but not limited to depression, borderline personality disorder, substance use disorders, eating disorders, and somatoform disorders. Methods The present study examined emotion regulation in relation to the virtue-based psychosocial adaptation model (V-PAM). 595 participants were clustered based on their Difficulties in Emotion Regulation Scale (DERS) score, producing two clusters (i.e., high functioning vs. low functioning). Then, emotion regulation group membership was discriminated by using five V-PAM virtue constructs, including courage, integrity, practical wisdom, committed action, and emotional transcendence. Results Results show that five virtues contribute to differentiating group membership. Practical wisdom was the strongest contributor, followed by integrity, emotional transcendence, committed action, and courage. Predictive discriminant analysis was conducted and 71% of cases were correctly classified. A discussion of the relationship between emotion regulation and virtues was elaborated. Conclusion The concept of virtue holds significant importance in the comprehension of an individualā€™s capacity to regulate their emotions, meriting future study.     Integrated In-vehicle Monitoring System Using 3D Human Pose Estimation and Seat Belt Segmentation

    Recently, along with interest in autonomous vehicles, the importance of monitoring systems for both drivers and passengers inside vehicles has been increasing. This paper proposes a novel in-vehicle monitoring system the combines 3D pose estimation, seat-belt segmentation, and seat-belt status classification networks. Our system outputs various information necessary for monitoring by accurately considering the data characteristics of the in-vehicle environment. Specifically, the proposed 3D pose estimation directly estimates the absolute coordinates of keypoints for a driver and passengers, and the proposed seat-belt segmentation is implemented by applying a structure based on the feature pyramid. In addition, we propose a classification task to distinguish between normal and abnormal states of wearing a seat belt using results that combine 3D pose estimation with seat-belt segmentation. These tasks can be learned simultaneously and operate in real-time. Our method was evaluated on a private dataset we newly created and annotated. The experimental results show that our method has significantly high performance that can be applied directly to real in-vehicle monitoring systems.Comment: AAAI 2022 workshop AI for Transportation accepte

    Role of Balloon Guide Catheter in Modern Endovascular Thrombectomy

    Proximal flow control achieved with a balloon guide catheter (BGC) during endovascular treatment of acute ischemic stroke is reviewed in this article. In clinical practice, BGCs offer a multi-faceted approach for clot retrieval by creating proximal flow arrest, reducing embolic burden, and shortening procedure time. Evaluation of frontline thrombectomy procedures with BGCs revealed advantages of combined use over the conventional guide catheter (CGC), notably in the significant reduction of distal emboli to both the affected and previously unaffected territories. Recently, new measures of early and complete reperfusion at first thrombectomy pass have been identified as independent predictors of improved outcomes, which were consistently demonstrated with use of BGC as a safe and effective option to minimize number of passes during intervention. Prior randomized controlled trials reported the positive correlation between BGC-treated patients and a lower risk of mortality as well as shortened procedure time. While BGC use is more common in stent retriever-mediated mechanical thrombectomy, preliminary data has shown the potential benefit of device application during contact aspiration thrombectomy to achieve successful recanalization. However, the question of which major endovascular strategy reigns superior as a frontline remains to be answered.     New parameterization of air-sea exchange coefficients and its impact on intensity prediction under major tropical cyclones

    Understanding and quantifying air-sea exchanges of enthalpy and momentum fluxes are crucial for the advanced prediction of tropical cyclone (TC) intensity. Here, we present a new parameterization of air-sea fluxes at extreme wind speeds from 40 m sāˆ’1 to 75 m sāˆ’1, which covers the range of major TCs. Our approach assumes that the TC can reach its maximum potential intensity (MPI) if there are no influences of external forces such as vertical wind shear or other environmental constraints.This method can estimate the ratio of the enthalpy and momentum exchange coefficient (Ck/Cd) under the most intense TCs without direct flux measurements. The estimation showed that Ck/Cd increases with wind speed at extreme winds above 40 m sāˆ’1. Two types of surface layer schemes of the Hurricane Weather and Research Forecast (HWRF) were designed based on the wind speed dependency of the Ck/Cd found at high winds: (i) an increase of Ck/Cd based on decreasing Cd (Cd_DC) and (ii) an increase of Ck/Cd based on increasing Ck (Ck_IC). The modified surface layer schemes were compared to the original HWRF scheme (using nearly fixed Cd and Ck at extreme winds; CTRL) through idealized experiments and real-case predictions. The idealized experiments showed that Cd_DC reduced frictional dissipation in the air-sea interface as well as significantly reduced sea surface cooling, making the TC stronger than other schemes. As a result, Cd_DC reduced the mean absolute error and negative bias by 15.0% (21.0%) and 19.1% (32.0%), respectively, for all lead times of Hurricane Irma in 2017 (Typhoon Mangkhut in 2018) compared to CTRL. This result suggests that new parameterization of Ck/Cd with decreasing Cd at high winds can help improve TC intensity prediction, which currently suffers from underestimating the intensity of the strongest TCs

    An Index to Better Estimate Tropical Cyclone Intensity Change in the Western North Pacific

    A revised predictor called the net energy gain rate (NGR) is suggested by considering wind dependent drag coefficient based on the existing maximum potential intensity theory. A series of wind speed dependent NGR, known as NGRā€w, is calculated based on preā€tropical cyclone (TC) averaged ocean temperatures from the surface down to 120 m (at 10ā€m intervals) to include the TCā€induced vertical mixing for 13 years (2004ā€“2016) in the western North Pacific. It turns out that the NGR50ā€w (NGRā€w based on temperature averaged over top 50 m) has the highest correlation with 24ā€h TC intensity change compared with the commonly used sea surface temperatureā€based intensification potential (POT), depthā€averaged temperatureā€based POT (POTDAT), and constant drag coefficient in the NGR. To demonstrate the effectiveness of the NGR50ā€w, we designed and conducted experiments for training (2004ā€“2014) and testing (2015ā€“2016). The model with the NGR50ā€w shows greater skill than the model with POTDAT or POT by reducing prediction errors by about 16%

    Developing a multi-center clinical data mart of ACEI and ARB for real-world evidence (RWE)

    Background Randomized controlled trials can be expensive and time-consuming, leading to medical researchers utilizing real-world evidence (RWE) based on already-collected data. We aimed to conduct various RWE studies on angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitors (ACEI) and angiotensin II receptor blocker (ARB), commonly used as first-line therapy for blood pressure, and to develop a multi-center clinical data mart (CDM) of ACEI/ARB for various clinical purposes. Methods Data from electronic medical records of St. Marys Hospital and the Seoul National University Hospital were collected. We obtained blood and urine test results of patients within the 30ā€‰days prior to their first prescription of ACEI or ARB, as well as the first date of diagnosis and presence of various chronic and cardiovascular diseases using the International Classification of Diseases-10 classification. One researcher managed data quality and collation for each hospital in order to facilitate patient anonymity. When results were unclear, the responsible investigator for each hospital attempted to resolve ambiguities by direct chart review. Results A total of 102,333 patients who were prescribed ACEI or ARB for the first time were included (21,481 ACEI, 80,551 ARB, and 301 both). Our ACEI/ARB-CDM included short-term studies (within 12ā€‰months) to observe changes in various blood or urinary laboratory test values after the initial prescription of ACEI or ARB and long-term studies to confirm the incidence of various diseases. Conclusion We established a CDM of RWE for ACEI/ARB prescription, which included various clinical studies. As we accumulate experience in this process, we expect that the use of RWE research will grow and develop.The research was supported by funding from the Korean Society of Hypertension (2018)

    Guidewire Breakage during Neurointerventional Procedures: a Report of Two Cases

    We report on two cases of microguidewire breakage that occurred during endovascular treatment of intracranial aneurysms. The microguidewire can be broken when a part of the wire is stuck due to vascular tortuosity, and, subsequently, application of excessive rotational movement. The mechanical and physical properties of a microguidewire are also important factors in microguidewire breakage. We also suggest technical tips for avoidance of this problem

    Summary: ArrayXPath () is a web-based service for mapping and visualizing microarray gene-expression data with integrated biological pathway resources using Scalable Vector Graphics (SVG). Deciphering the crosstalk among pathways and integrating biomedical ontologies and knowledge bases may help biological interpretation of microarray data. ArrayXPath is empowered by integrating gene-pathway, disease-pathway, drug-pathway and pathwayā€“pathway correlations with integrated Gene Ontology, Medical Subject Headings and OMIM Morbid Map-based annotations. We applied Fisher's exact test and relative risk to evaluate the statistical significance of the correlations.     Bone regeneration potential of sub-microfibrous membranes with osteogenic induction of rBMSC for tissue engineering

    Purpose: To examine the biocompatibility and osteoinductive potential ofĀ  sub-microfibrous membranes with cells in vitro and in vivo.Methods: Polylactic acid (PLA) and poly-Īµ-caprolactone (PCL) were blended at various volume ratios (PLA:PCL = 100:0, 70:30, 50:50, 30:70 and 0:100) and each membrane form was prepared by electrospinning. Cell viability,Ā  biocompatibility, and bone regeneration were measured.Results: The membranes from the PLA/PCL blends prepared by an electrospinning process showed a range of diameter distribution ranging from 1,580 to 550 nm. The cells of 100 % PCL membrane (smallest diameter) exhibited significantly higher adhesion and proliferation than those of the other membranes. Among theĀ  membranes from PLA/PCL blends, PCL membrane showed weak inflammatory changes in the early stages of implantation without acute or chronic inflammation. PCL membranes with osteogenically-induced cells successfully stimulated new bone formation in a rate calvarial defect model.Conclusion: The results indicate that biodegradable PCL sub-microfibrous membrane produced by electrospinning process seems to have excellent biocompatibility, and may be used as a scaffold for bone tissue engineering.Keywords: Biocompatibility, Hard tissue, Biomaterial availability, Bone remodeling, Polylactic acid, Poly-Īµ-caprolactone, Osteoinductive potential, Sub-microfibrous membrane

    Readout-segmented echo-planar imaging in diffusion-weighted mr imaging in breast cancer: comparison with single-shot echo-planar imaging in image quality

    Objective: The purpose of this study was to compare the image quality of standard single-shot echo-planar imaging (ss-EPI) and that of readout-segmented EPI (rs-EPI) in patients with breast cancer. Materials and Methods: Seventy-one patients with 74 breast cancers underwent both ss-EPI and rs-EPI. For qualitative comparison of image quality, three readers independently assessed the two sets of diffusion-weighted (DW) images. To evaluate geometric distortion, a comparison was made between lesion lengths derived from contrast enhanced MR (CE-MR) images and those obtained from the corresponding DW images. For assessment of image parameters, signal-to-noise ratio (SNR), lesion contrast, and contrast-to-noise ratio (CNR) were calculated. Results: The rs-EPI was superior to ss-EPI in most criteria regarding the qualitative image quality. Anatomical structure distinction, delineation of the lesion, ghosting artifact, and overall image quality were significantly better in rs-EPI. Regarding the geometric distortion, lesion length on ss-EPI was significantly different from that of CE-MR, whereas there were no significant differences between CE-MR and rs-EPI. The rs-EPI was superior to ss-EPI in SNR and CNR. Conclusion: Readout-segmented EPI is superior to ss-EPI in the aspect of image quality in DW MR imaging of the breast
