    Development of Simplified Models of Water Quality in Lignite Mining Areas

    The development of complex decision support model systems for the analysis of regional water policies for regions with intense socio-economic development effecting and being affected by the water resources system is of increasing importance. One of the most illustrative examples are regions with open-pit lignite mining. Such model systems have to be based on appropriate submodels e.g. for water quality processes. The paper describes submodel for groundwater and surface water quality with special regard to open-pit lignite mining regions. We consider the discharge of acid ferruginous water into rivers as having the most important impact on water quality in open-pit lignite mining areas. One goal of the model system is the choice of the necessary degree of purification for mine water treatment plants, taking into account self-purification in rivers and remaining pits as well as the water quality demand of down-stream water users. Based on comprehensive water quality models, the development of which is described in the paper, the possibilities for the derivation of reduced models are described. Those model have been elaborated for groundwater, as the source of pollution, mine water treatment plants as control units, river sections with an intake of acid ferruginous water, and remaining pits, which can also serve as effective control units. Related with each other, these models form the complex system model, a system of differential equations. They were numerically solved. The computer program is included in the paper

    Cicrumnuclear Supernova Remnants and HII Regions in NGC 253

    Archival VLA data has been used to produce arcsecond-resolution 6- and 20-cm images of the region surrounding the nuclear 200-pc (~15") starburst in NGC 253. Twenty-two discrete sources stronger than 0.4 mJy have been detected within ~2 kpc (~3') of the galaxy nucleus; almost all these sources must be associated with the galaxy. None of the radio sources coincides with a detected X-ray binary, so they appear to be due to supernova remnants and H II regions. The region outside the central starburst has a derived radio supernova rate of <~0.1/yr, and may account for at least 20% of the recent star formation in NGC 253. Most of the newly identified sources have steep, nonthermal radio spectra, but several relatively strong thermal sources also exist, containing the equivalent of tens of O5 stars. These stars are spread over tens of parsecs, and are embedded in regions having average ionized gas densities of 20-200/cm^3, much lower than in the most active nuclear star-forming regions in NGC 253 or in the super star clusters seen in other galaxies. The strongest region of thermal emission coincides with a highly reddened area seen at near-infrared wavelengths, possibly containing optically obscured H II regions.Comment: 17 pages, 3 postscript figures, AASTeX format, in press for Astronomical Journal, July 200

    Water Policies: Regions with Open-Pit Lignite Mining (Introduction to the IIASA Study)

    There is an apparent need for the analysis of long-term regional water policies to reconcile conflicting interests in regions with open-pit lignite mining. The most important. interest groups in such regions are mining, municipal and industrial water supply, agriculture as well as the "environment". A scientifically sound and practically simple policy-oriented system of methods and computerized procedures has to be developed. To develop such a system is part of the research work in the Regional Water Policies project carried out at the International Institute for Applied Systems Analysis (IIASA) in collaboration with research institutes in the German Democratic Republic, Poland, and in other countries as well. A test area that includes typical water-related elements of mining regions and significant conflicts and interest groups has been chosen. The first stage in the analysis is oriented towards developing a scenario generating system as a tool to choose "good" policies from the regional point of view. Therefore a policy-oriented interactive decision support model system is under development, considering the dynamic, nonlinear and uncertain systems behaviour. It combines a model for multi-criteria analysis in planning periods with a simulation model for monthly systems behaviour.     The Stanley Foundation Bipolar Network: Results of the naturalistic follow-up study after 2.5 years of follow-up in the German centres

    The Stanley Foundation Bipolar Network (SFBN) is an international, multisite network investigating the characteristics and course of bipolar disorder. Methods (history, ratings and longitudinal follow-up) are standardized and equally applied in all 7 centres. This article describes demographics and illness characteristics of the first 152 German patients enrolled in them SFBN as well as the results of 2.5 years of follow-up. Patients in Germany were usually enrolled after hospitalisation. More than 72% of the study population suffered from bipolar I disorder and 25% from bipolar 11 disorder. The mean +/- SD age of the study participants was 42.08 +/- 13.5 years, and the mean SD age of onset 24.44 +/- 10.9 years. More than 40% of the sample reported a rapid-cycling course in history, and even more a cycle acceleration overtime. 37% attempted suicide at least once. 36% had an additional Axis I disorder, with alcohol abuse being the most common one, followed by anxiety disorders. During the follow-up period, only 27% remained stable, 56% had a recurrence, 12.8% perceived subsyndromal symptoms despite treatment and regular visits. 27% suffered from a rapid-cycling course during the follow-up period. Recurrences were significantly associated with bipolar I disorder, an additional comorbid Axis I disorder, rapid cycling in history, a higher number of mood stabilizers and the long-term use of typical antipsychotics. Rapid cycling during follow-up was only associated with a rapidcycling course in history, a higher number of mood stabilizers and at least one suicide attempt in history. Copyright (c) 2003 S.     Testing Radiatively-Inefficient Accretion Flow Theory: an XMM-Newton Observation of NGC 3998

    We present the results of a 10 ks XMM-Newton observation of NGC 3998, a ``type-I'' LINER galaxy. Our goal is to test the extent to which radiatively-inefficient accretion flow (RIAF) models and/or scaled-down AGN models are consistent with the observed properties of NGC 3998. The upper-limit for narrow Fe-K emission derived from a combined fit of the XMM-Newton and BeppoSAX spectra is 25 eV, which is one of the strictest limits to date for any AGN. This significantly rules out Fe-K emission as is expected to be observed in typical Seyfert 1 galaxies. The lack of any reflection features suggests that any optically-thick, geometrically-thin accretion disk must be truncated, probably at a radius of order 100-300 R_s. RIAF models fit the UV to X-ray spectral energy distribution of NGC 3998 reasonably well. In these models the mid-IR flux also constrains the emission from any outer thin disk component that might be present. The UV to X-ray SED is also consistent with a Comptonized thin disk with a very low accretion rate, in which case the lack of Fe-K emission may be due to an ionized accretion disk. Accretion models in general do not account for the observed radio flux of NGC 3998, and the radio flux may be due to a jet. Recent jet models may also be consistent with the nuclear fluxes of NGC 3998 in general, including the X-ray, optical/UV and mid-IR bands. We also derive nuclear fluxes using archival HST WFPC2 data to constrain the SED of NGC 3998.     A Close Look at Star Formation around Active Galactic Nuclei

    We analyse star formation in the nuclei of 9 Seyfert galaxies at spatial resolutions down to 0.085arcsec, corresponding to length scales of less than 10pc in some objects. Our data were taken mostly with the near infrared adaptive optics integral field spectrograph SINFONI. The stellar light profiles typically have size scales of a few tens of parsecs. In two cases there is unambiguous kinematic evidence for stellar disks on these scales. In the nuclear regions there appear to have been recent - but no longer active - starbursts in the last 10-300Myr. The stellar luminosity is less than a few percent of the AGN in the central 10pc, whereas on kiloparsec scales the luminosities are comparable. The surface stellar luminosity density follows a similar trend in all the objects, increasing steadily at smaller radii up to 10^{13}L_sun/kpc^2 in the central few parsecs, where the mass surface density exceeds 10^4M_sun/pc^2. The intense starbursts were probably Eddington limited and hence inevitably short-lived, implying that the starbursts occur in multiple short bursts. The data hint at a delay of 50--100Myr between the onset of star formation and subsequent fuelling of the black hole. We discuss whether this may be a consequence of the role that stellar ejecta could play in fuelling the black hole. While a significant mass is ejected by OB winds and supernovae, their high velocity means that very little of it can be accreted. On the other hand winds from AGB stars ultimately dominate the total mass loss, and they can also be accreted very efficiently because of their slow speeds.Comment: 51 pages, including 27 figures; accepted by ApJ (paper reorganised, but results & conclusions the same

    A mitochondrial-focused genetic interaction map reveals a scaffold-like complex required for inner membrane organization in mitochondria.

    To broadly explore mitochondrial structure and function as well as the communication of mitochondria with other cellular pathways, we constructed a quantitative, high-density genetic interaction map (the MITO-MAP) in Saccharomyces cerevisiae. The MITO-MAP provides a comprehensive view of mitochondrial function including insights into the activity of uncharacterized mitochondrial proteins and the functional connection between mitochondria and the ER. The MITO-MAP also reveals a large inner membrane-associated complex, which we term MitOS for mitochondrial organizing structure, comprised of Fcj1/Mitofilin, a conserved inner membrane protein, and five additional components. MitOS physically and functionally interacts with both outer and inner membrane components and localizes to extended structures that wrap around the inner membrane. We show that MitOS acts in concert with ATP synthase dimers to organize the inner membrane and promote normal mitochondrial morphology. We propose that MitOS acts as a conserved mitochondrial skeletal structure that differentiates regions of the inner membrane to establish the normal internal architecture of mitochondria

    The Radio Properties of Composite LINER/HII Galaxies

    Arcsec-resolution VLA observations -- newly obtained as well as published -- of 40 nearby galaxies are discussed, completing a study of the radio properties of a magnitude-limited sample of nearby galaxies of the composite LINER/HII type. Our results reveal an overall detection rate of at least 25% AGN candidates among these composite sources. The general properties of these AGN candidates, as compared to non-AGN composite sources and HII galaxies, are discussed.Comment: Accepted for publication in ApJ

    The Off-nuclear Starbursts In NGC 4038/4039 (The Antennae Galaxies)

    Imaging of the Antennae galaxies (NGC 4038/4039) with the Infrared Array Camera (IRAC) aboard the Spitzer Space Telescope reveals large concentrations of star forming activity away from both nuclei of the two merging galaxies. These images confirm earlier findings based on ISO data with lower angular resolution. The short wavelength emission shows numerous compact sources identified as stellar clusters. At the longer wavelengths, bright, more amorphous and filamentary features correlate well with the known distributions of denser gas, warm dust, and HII regions. There are also fainter, more diffuse components at all wavelengths that permeate the entire region and extend into the two tidal tails. Non-stellar dust emission dominates the 5.8 and 8.0 micron images, accounting for as much as 79% of the light at 5.8 micron and 95% at 8 micron, averaged over the entire galaxy. Assuming that the non-stellar emission traces star formation, the IRAC data provide a view into the total underlying star forming activities unaffected by obscuration. Using the flux ratio of non-stellar to stellar emission as a guide, we map the local star formation rate in the Antennae and compare that to similar measurements in both normal and infrared-luminous galaxies. This rate in the active regions is found to be as high as those seen in starburst and some ultra-luminous infrared galaxies on ``per unit mass'' basis. The two galactic centers actually have lower star forming rates than the off-nuclear regions despite the presence of abundant dense gas and dust, suggesting that the latter is a necessary but not sufficient condition for on-going star formation.Comment: 13 pages, 3 figures, to appear in the ApJ Supplement, September 2004 (Spitzer Special Issue
