Bioarchaeology and burial practices at Capela de Nossa Senhora da Victória (Rio Maior, Portugal)

    Get PDF
A team of archaeologists discovered numerous human remains during three seasons of excavations and architectural analysis at Capela de Nossa Senhora da Victória (Our Lady of Victory Chapel) in Rio Maior, Portugal between 1987 and 1989. The earliest excavation in 1987-88 occurred both inside of the standing chapel and outside along the south wall. These initial excavations, directed by Oliveira, Martins, and Pereira, uncovered the foundations of a medieval manor house and a few bones identified as human remains (Oliveira et al., 1989). As Figure 1 illustrates, in 1989 more extensive excavations in front of the Chapel uncovered a small cemetery containing at least seven burials and an ossuary (Oliveira et al., 1990). This report focuses on the osteological analysis of skeletal remains recovered from the excavations at Capela de Nossa Senhora da Victória

The emotional burden of type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2D) can complicate self-management. Exploring the feasibility of mental and physical health co-management in limited-resourced settings is needed. Thus, we assessed providers’ awareness of the emotional burden their patients experience and their roles in supporting their patients with T2D. We conducted a formative qualitative study using in-depth interviews with 14 providers, including physicians, nurses, and community health workers recruited at two rural health clinics in the Dominican Republic. We coded transcripts using inductive and deductive codes and developed themes through iterative comparative analysis. All providers recognized that patients experience an emotional burden managing life with T2D. Some providers viewed the provision of emotional support as integral to their role and believed that they could do so. Others viewed it as the responsibility of the family or expressed the need for additional guidance on how to provide emotional support. Providers also identified several barriers to integrating emotional support into routine clinical care including personality characteristics, lack of training, and insufficient staffing. While providers recognize the need for emotional support, they identified individual, clinical, and systems-level barriers. Strategies to address these barriers include training specific providers on emotional support provision, balancing workload, and building or strengthening referral systems

On the incorporation of interval-valued fuzzy sets into the Bousi-Prolog system: declarative semantics, implementation and applications

In this paper we analyse the benefits of incorporating interval-valued fuzzy sets into the Bousi-Prolog system. A syntax, declarative semantics and im- plementation for this extension is presented and formalised. We show, by using potential applications, that fuzzy logic programming frameworks enhanced with them can correctly work together with lexical resources and ontologies in order to improve their capabilities for knowledge representation and reasoning

    Get PDF

The Structure Of The Giant Haemoglobin From Glossoscolex Paulistus.

The sequences of all seven polypeptide chains from the giant haemoglobin of the free-living earthworm Glossoscolex paulistus (HbGp) are reported together with the three-dimensional structure of the 3.6 MDa complex which they form. The refinement of the full particle, which has been solved at 3.2 Å resolution, the highest resolution reported to date for a hexagonal bilayer haemoglobin composed of 12 protomers, is reported. This has allowed a more detailed description of the contacts between subunits which are essential for particle stability. Interpretation of features in the electron-density maps suggests the presence of metal-binding sites (probably Zn(2+) and Ca(2+)) and glycosylation sites, some of which have not been reported previously. The former appear to be important for the integrity of the particle. The crystal structure of the isolated d chain (d-HbGp) at 2.1 Å resolution shows different interchain contacts between d monomers compared with those observed in the full particle. Instead of forming trimers, as seen in the complex, the isolated d chains associate to form dimers across a crystallographic twofold axis. These observations eliminate the possibility that trimers form spontaneously in solution as intermediates during the formation of the dodecameric globin cap and contribute to understanding of the possible ways in which the particle self-assembles.711257-127

Green and roasted arabica coffees differentiated by ripeness, process and cup quality via electrospray ionization mass spectrometry fingerprinting

    Get PDF
Direct infusion electrospray ionization mass spectrometry in both the negative ESI(-)-MS and positive ESI(+)-MS ion modes are investigated to differentiate green and roasted Arabica coffees with different stages of ripeness (green, ripe and overripe), post-harvesting process (dry, wet and semi-wet) and coffees with different cup qualities. In the ESI(-)-MS of green coffees, ions from deprotonated fatty acids and chlorogenic acids are the most important for ripeness discrimination. In the ESI(+)-MS, maturity is differentiated by ions from protonated caffeine, chlorogenic acids and K+ adducts of fatty acids. To differentiate between post-harvesting process in both ionization modes, ions from fatty acids, chlorogenic acids, sugars and carboxylic acids generated in the fermentation process are the most representative. Roasted Arabica coffees are also well discriminated: in the ESI(-)-MS, ions from chlorogenic acids and short-chain organic acids derived from sugars are important. In the ESI(+)-MS, discrimination are mainly performed by low m/z ions such as protonated pyridine and alkylpiridines formed via trigonelline degradation. Both ESI(+)-MS and ESI(-)-MS are able to differentiate cup quality for Arabica roasted coffees and the ions used to perform discrimination are the same ones described in ripeness and post-harvesting processes.
