    Surface photometry of low surface brightness galaxies

    Low surface brightness (LSB) galaxies are galaxies dominated by an exponential disc whose central surface brightness is much fainter than the value of mu(B)(0) = 21.65 +/- 0.30 mag arcsec(-2) found by Freeman. In this paper we present broadband photometry of a sample of 21 late-type LSB galaxies. The median central surface brightness of the sample is mu(B)(0) = 23.2 mag arcsec(-2) and the median scale length is 3.2 kpc, showing that LSB galaxies are normal-sized galaxies. We find colours that are comparable to or bluer than those of the more widely studied 'normal' high surface brightness (HSB) galaxies. LSB galaxies are therefore not faded discs that have no current star formation. The colours cannot on the other hand be ascribed entirely to metallicity effects, but we can explain them by assuming a sporadic star formation rate scenario. LSB galaxies hence appear to be unevolved and quiescent objects, which give us an insight into the evolution of galaxies in an unperturbed environment

    Estimate of halo ellipticity as a function of radius with flexions

    The cold dark matter theory predicts triaxial dark matter haloes. The radial distribution of halo ellipticity depends on baryonic processes and the nature of dark matter particles (collisionless or collisional). Here we show that we can use lensing flexion ratios to measure the halo ellipticity as a function of radius. We introduce a weight function and study the relationship between the first and second order statistics of flexion ratios, both of which can be used to reduce the bias in the estimate of ellipticity. we perform numerical tests for our method, and demonstrate that it can reduce the bias and determine the halo ellipticity as a function of radius. We also point out that the minimum mean flexion ratio can be used to trace the centres of galaxy clusters.Comment: 9 pages,9 figures, MNRAS accepte

    The launch of the ESPEN Special Interest Group in Paediatric Clinical Nutrition

    Background & aims: At the 37th annual ESPEN congress in Lisbon, a new Special Interest Group (SIG) in Paediatric Clinical Nutrition was formed. As a first activity of this group, a survey was sent out to all ESPEN members to collect opinions about the objectives of this SIG, explore the interest of ESPEN members in paediatric related nutrition research and clinical practice and to offer to the opportunity for a wider future participation. Methods: A web-based questionnaire survey was distributed to all members of ESPEN via the regular society's newsletter. Results: In total, 123/2828 (4.3%) ESPEN members from 50 countries completed the survey. Fifty-nine of the responders were working in paediatric clinical practice and/or research, 42 in adult medicine, and 20 in both. Fifty-seven (51%) respondents agreed that there is inadequate representation of paediatric nutrition in the current ESPEN activities and 90% of all would like to see more paediatric topics at the ESPEN annual congresses. The development of paediatric clinical practice guidelines should be the scope of this SIG, as indicated by 85 (69%) respondents. Seventy-six (69%) believed that the creation of a Paediatric Clinical Nutrition SIG is likely to impact positively on the society's membership. Conclusions: There is an unmet need for more paediatric related topics and representation with the activities of the ESPEN group. The SIG in Paediatrics aspires to foster multicentre research, development of guidelines and provide a hub for interaction and knowledge exchange

    The deep inferior epigastric artery perforator flap for autologous reconstruction of large partial mastectomy defects

    BACKGROUND:: Breast conservation surgery in the treatment of early stage breast cancer has become increasingly utilized as a means to avoiding mastectomy. While partial mastectomy defects (PMDs) may often be cosmetically acceptable, some cases warrant consideration of reconstructive options, and while several reconstructive options have been described in this role, a series of deep inferior epigastric perforator (DIEP) flaps has not been reported to date. METHODS:: A cohort of 18 patients undergoing PMD reconstruction with a DIEP flap were included. Patient-specific data, operation details, cosmetic results, and complication rates were assessed. Oncologic outcomes, in particular recurrence rates, were also evaluated. RESULTS:: In our series there were no cases of partial or total flap necrosis, and overall complications were low. There were two cases of wound infection (both had undergone radiotherapy), managed conservatively, and one case of reoperation due to hematoma. There were no cancer recurrences or effect on oncologic management. Cosmetic outcome was rated as high by both patients and surgeon. The results were thus comparable with other reconstructive options. CONCLUSION:: Although autologous reconstruction has an established complication rate, our results suggest that the DIEP flap may be of considerable value for delayed reconstruction of selected larger partial mastectomy defects.     Current clinical trials in paediatrics: report of the ESPEN special interest group in paediatrics

    Background & aims: At the 38th annual ESPEN congress in The Hague, the Netherlands, the Special Interest Group (SIG) in Paediatrics presented data about current research activities in the field of paediatric nutrition which are performed worldwide and translated this to future research perspectives. Methods: Extensive search of all registered observational and interventional clinical trials in the database ClinicalTrials.gov using the search terms: children nutrition, paediatrics nutrition and children feeding. Results: A total of 717 studies were found; 173 were duplicates and 114 included adult participants and were therefore excluded. Hence, 430 remained for analysis, of which 69% were randomized controlled trials. The most investigated research topic was nutrition in specific diseases (n = 98), followed by obesity (n = 92), and studies including premature infants (n = 48). The overall median estimated enrolment of children in the trials was 150 children [IQR 50–365]. There were 44 studies in which >1000 participants will be enrolled and six studies with >10,000 participants. Studies including >1000 participants were primarily performed in North America (39%), Africa (27%), and Europe (16%). Conclusions: This SIG report showed that 430 clinical nutrition trials in paediatrics are registered and current research focusses primarily on specific diseases and obesity. The SIG paediatrics encourages future research to invest in well-controlled interventional trials

    REL: An Entity Linker Standing on the Shoulders of Giants

    Entity linking is a standard component in modern retrieval system that is often performed by third-party toolkits. Despite the plethora of open source options, it is difficult to find a single system that has a modular architecture where certain components may be replaced, does not depend on external sources, can easily be updated to newer Wikipedia versions, and, most important of all, has state-of-the-art performance. The REL system presented in this paper aims to fill that gap. Building on state-of-the-art neural components from natural language processing research, it is provided as a Python package as well as a web API. We also report on an experimental comparison against both well-established systems and the current state-of-the-art on standard entity linking benchmarks

    Pediatric screening tools for malnutrition: an update

    Purpose of review There is ongoing interest in nutritional screening tools in pediatrics to facilitate the identification of children at risk for malnutrition who need further assessment and possible nutritional intervention. The choice for a specific tool depends on various factors. This review aims to provide an overview of recent progress in pediatric nutritional screening methods. Recent findings We present recent studies about newly developed or adjusted tools, the applicability of nutritional screening tools in specific populations, and how to implement screening in the overall process of improving nutritional care in the pediatric hospital setting. Summary Three new screening tools have been developed for use on admission to hospital: two for the mixed pediatric hospitalized population and one for infants. A simple weekly rescreening tool to identify hospital-acquired nutritional deterioration was developed for use in children with prolonged hospital stay.     Association between nutritional status and subjective health status in chronically ill children attending special schools

    Purpose: In hospitalized children with a chronic disease, malnutrition was associated with a lower subjective health status. In outpatient children with a chronic disease attending special schools, this association has never been studied. The aim of this study was to assess the association between nutritional status and subjective health status in chronically ill children attending special schools. Methods: Overall, 642 children, median age 9.8 years (IQR 7.7–11.5), 60 % male, 72 % Caucasian, were included in this prospective study in nine special schools for chronically ill children in the Netherlands. Overall malnutrition was assessed as: acute malnutrition (<−2 SDS for weight for height (WFH)) and chronic malnutrition (<−2 SDS for height for age). The malnutrition risk was assessed with the nutritional risk-screening tool STRONGkids. Subjective health status was assessed with EQ-5D. Results: Overall, 16 % of the children had overall malnutrition: 3 % acute and 13 % chronic malnutrition. Nurses reported ‘some/severe problems’ on the health status dimensions mobility (15 %), self-care (17 %), usual activities (19 %), pain/discomfort (22 %), and anxiety/depression (22 %) in chronically ill children. Their mean visual analogue scale score (VAS) was 73.0 (SD 11.1). Malnutrition, medication usage, and younger age explained 38 % of the variance of the VAS score. Conclusions: The presence of overall malnutrition in chronically ill children attending special schools was associated with lower subjective health status, especially in younger children and in those with chronic medication usage. Therefore, it is important to develop and use profile-screening tools to identify these children

    Large-scale H I in nearby radio galaxies - II. The nature of classical low-power radio sources

    An important aspect of solving the long-standing question as to what triggers various types of active galactic nuclei (AGN) involves a thorough understanding of the overall properties and formation history of their host galaxies. This is the second in a series of papers that systematically study the large-scale properties of cold neutral hydrogen (H I) gas in nearby radio galaxies. The main goal is to investigate the importance of gas-rich galaxy mergers and interactions among radio-loud AGN. In this paper, we present results of a complete sample of classical low-power radio galaxies. We find that extended Fanaroff & Riley type-I radio sources are generally not associated with gas-rich galaxy mergers or ongoing violent interactions, but occur in early-type galaxies without large (>rsim 108 M⊙) amounts of extended neutral hydrogen gas. In contrast, enormous discs/rings of H I gas (with sizes up to 190 kpc and masses up to 2 × 1010 M⊙) are detected around the host galaxies of a significant fraction of the compact radio sources in our sample. This segregation in H I mass with radio-source size likely indicates that either these compact radio sources are confined by large amounts of gas in the central region or that their fuelling is inefficient and different from the fuelling process of classical FR I radio sources. To first order, the overall H I properties of our complete sample (detection rate, mass and morphology) appear similar to those of radio-quiet early-type galaxies. If confirmed by better statistics, this would imply that low-power radio-AGN activity may be a short and recurrent phase that occurs at some point during the lifetime of many early-type galaxies
