    Some applications of Ge(Li) gamma-ray spectroscopy to fuel element assay

D. thesis by the first author and supervised by the second and third author, MIT Dept. of Nuclear Engineering, 1970Includes bibliographical references (pages 195-198)It was the object of this work to study the gamma rays emitted by the products of the interaction of thermal neutrons with the nuclei of U-238, Th-232, U-235 and Pu-239 during and after irradiation and to explore some applications mainly to fuel element assay. An irradiation facility and a Ge(Li) detector cryostat were constructed for this purpose. A new method of assaying a fuel rod containing a mixture of plutonium and uranium oxide, based on the difference in the observed yield of the fission products 1-135 and Sr-92, has been developed. The energies and intensities of the thermal neutron capture gamma rays for U-238 and Th-232 were determined. Four new lines have been found in the energy region previously unexplored for U-238. For Th-232, 66 certain lines were found, compared to 7 lines in the literature. Many prompt gammas emitted 'by the highly excited fission products following the fission of U-235 and Pu-239 were resolved in the energy region above 1.4 MeV. For U-235 fissions, 57 lines were found, and for Pu-239, 51 certain lines were recorded. The use of prompt gammas for assaying fuel rods was investigated. An accuracy of about ± 7% was obtained for the analysis of U-238 content; ± 10% to ± 20% accuracy was obtained for U-235 analysis in the range of 1% to 2% enrichment; and ± 35% accuracy for the analysis of 0.25% Puenriched rods. It has been found that Ge(Li) detectors can be operated as fast neutron detectors and used to determine the relative neutron yield. With this method, the enrichment of uranium rods can be found with an accuracy of ± 1% to ± 2% in the range from 116 to 2% enrichment.     Interpretable Style Transfer for Text-to-Speech with ControlVAE and Diffusion Bridge

    With the demand for autonomous control and personalized speech generation, the style control and transfer in Text-to-Speech (TTS) is becoming more and more important. In this paper, we propose a new TTS system that can perform style transfer with interpretability and high fidelity. Firstly, we design a TTS system that combines variational autoencoder (VAE) and diffusion refiner to get refined mel-spectrograms. Specifically, a two-stage and a one-stage system are designed respectively, to improve the audio quality and the performance of style transfer. Secondly, a diffusion bridge of quantized VAE is designed to efficiently learn complex discrete style representations and improve the performance of style transfer. To have a better ability of style transfer, we introduce ControlVAE to improve the reconstruction quality and have good interpretability simultaneously. Experiments on LibriTTS dataset demonstrate that our method is more effective than baseline models.Comment: Accepted at Interspeech202

    MM-TTS: Multi-modal Prompt based Style Transfer for Expressive Text-to-Speech Synthesis

    The style transfer task in Text-to-Speech refers to the process of transferring style information into text content to generate corresponding speech with a specific style. However, most existing style transfer approaches are either based on fixed emotional labels or reference speech clips, which cannot achieve flexible style transfer. Recently, some methods have adopted text descriptions to guide style transfer. In this paper, we propose a more flexible multi-modal and style controllable TTS framework named MM-TTS. It can utilize any modality as the prompt in unified multi-modal prompt space, including reference speech, emotional facial images, and text descriptions, to control the style of the generated speech in a system. The challenges of modeling such a multi-modal style controllable TTS mainly lie in two aspects:1)aligning the multi-modal information into a unified style space to enable the input of arbitrary modality as the style prompt in a single system, and 2)efficiently transferring the unified style representation into the given text content, thereby empowering the ability to generate prompt style-related voice. To address these problems, we propose an aligned multi-modal prompt encoder that embeds different modalities into a unified style space, supporting style transfer for different modalities. Additionally, we present a new adaptive style transfer method named Style Adaptive Convolutions to achieve a better style representation. Furthermore, we design a Rectified Flow based Refiner to solve the problem of over-smoothing Mel-spectrogram and generate audio of higher fidelity. Since there is no public dataset for multi-modal TTS, we construct a dataset named MEAD-TTS, which is related to the field of expressive talking head. Our experiments on the MEAD-TTS dataset and out-of-domain datasets demonstrate that MM-TTS can achieve satisfactory results based on multi-modal prompts.Comment: Accepted at AAAI202

The period covered by the report is January 1, 1968 through September 30, 1970. In addition to summarizing results for the entire contract period, this report also serves as the final annual report; thus, work completed in the period of October 1, 1969 through September 30, 1970 is dealt with in more detail than the earlier work. Methods were developed to measure the heterogeneous parameters 17, [Gamma] [eta] and [Alpha] for single fuel elements immersed in moderator in an exponential tank using foil activation measurements external to the fuel. These methods were applied to clustered fuel rods in D 20 moderator and single fuel rods in H 20 moderator, and the results were extended to and compared with data on complete multi-element lattices reported by other laboratories. Advanced gamma spectrometric methods using Ge(Li) detectors were applied to the analysis of both prompt and fission product decay gammas for the nondestructive analysis of the fuel used in this work. Methods development research focused on determination of the epithermal absorption constant, A.     The role of ancillary ligands and of electron poor alkenes and alkynes in stabilizing Pd(0) derivatives: A comparative study

    The peculiar characteristics of the ligand neocuproine (2,9-dimethylphenanthroline) allow a number of exchange equilibrium studies between the low valence complex [Pd(eta(2)-nq)(Neocup)] (nq = naphthoquinone; Neocup = neocuproine) and several alkenes and alkynes. A new order of stability which compares differently unsaturated molecules was established. An overview of the factors governing the stability of palladium(0) alkene and alkyne derivatives as a function of the steric and electronic characteristics of both the unsaturated molecule and the ligand becomes accessible and a comparison with the previously determined order was therefore feasible. Such a comparison enlightens the importance of the substituent methyl groups in ortho position of the hetero-aromatic ring which represents the molecular fragment common to all the ligands considered. Taking advantage of the steric requirements of the alkene tmetc (tmetc = tetramethylethylenetetracarboxylate) a kinetic investigation of the reaction between the olefin itself and the complexes [Pd(eta(2)-dmfu)(L-L')] (dmfu = dimethylfumarate; L-L' = 8-diphenylphosphanyl-2-methyl-quinoline, neocuproine, phenanthroline) was carried out. The structures of the complexes [Pd(eta(2)-dmfu)(DPPQ)] and [Pd(eta(2)-deta)(Neocup)] (deta = but-2-ynedioc acid diethyl ester) were also reported in the present paper. The structure of the latter represents the first example of a palladium(0) complex in which the N(2)C(2) donor set around the metal centre is supported by a chelating eta(2)-alkyne
