Satellite altimeters after Skylab and GEOS-C - should they utilize a single transmitter or an array of pulsed amplifiers?
An attempt was made to determine if future satellite altimeters, operating at K-band, should use a single transmitter or an array of pulsed amplifiers. The two systems were compared as a function of reliability, power, service life, system requirements, and weight. Preliminary results indicate the modular system to be superior in service life and reliability although it requires more power and is substantially heavier than the single system. No concrete conclusions were reached as to which system should be used
Microsecond resolution of quasiparticle tunneling in the single-Cooper-pair-transistor
We present radio-frequency measurements on a single-Cooper-pair-transistor in
which individual quasiparticle poisoning events were observed with microsecond
temporal resolution. Thermal activation of the quasiparticle dynamics is
investigated, and consequently, we are able to determine energetics of the
poisoning and un-poisoning processes. In particular, we are able to assign an
effective quasiparticle temperature to parameterize the poisoning rate.Comment: 4 pages, 4 fig

Impact of g-factors and valleys on spin qubits in a silicon double quantum dot
We define single electron spin qubits in a silicon MOS double quantum dot
system. By mapping the qubit resonance frequency as a function of gate-induced
electric field, the spectrum reveals an anticrossing that is consistent with an
inter-valley spin-orbit coupling. We fit the data from which we extract an
inter-valley coupling strength of 43 MHz. In addition, we observe a narrow
resonance near the primary qubit resonance when we operate the device in the
(1,1) charge configuration. The experimental data is consistent with a
simulation involving two weakly exchanged-coupled spins with a g-factor
difference of 1 MHz, of the same order as the Rabi frequency. We conclude that
the narrow resonance is the result of driven transitions between the T- and T+
triplet states, using an ESR signal of frequency located halfway between the
resonance frequencies of the two individual spins. The findings presented here
offer an alternative method of implementing two-qubit gates, of relevance to
the operation of larger scale spin qubit systems
Measuring the dark flow with public X-ray cluster data
We present new results on the "dark flow" from a measurement of the dipole in
the distribution of peculiar velocities of galaxy clusters, applying the
methodology proposed and developed by us earlier. Our latest measurement is
conducted using new, low-noise 7-yr WMAP data as well as an all-sky sample of
X-ray selected galaxy clusters compiled exclusively from published catalogs.
Our analysis of the CMB signature of the kinematic Sunyaev-Zeldovich (SZ)
effect finds a statistically significant dipole at the location of galaxy
clusters. The residual dipole outside the cluster regions is small, rendering
our overall measurement 3-4 sigma significant. The amplitude of the dipole
correlates with cluster properties, being larger for the most X-ray luminous
clusters, as required if the signal is produced by the SZ effect. Since it is
measured at zero monopole, the dipole can not be due to the thermal SZ effect.
Our results are consistent with those obtained earlier by us from 5-yr WMAP
data and using a proprietary cluster catalog. In addition, they are robust to
quadrupole removal, demonstrating that quadrupole leakage contributes
negligibly to the signal. The lower noise of the 7-yr WMAP also allows us, for
the first time, to obtain tentative empirical confirmation of our earlier
conjecture that the adopted filtering flips the sign of the KSZ effect for
realistic clusters and thus of the deduced direction of the flow. The latter is
consistent with our earlier measurement in both the amplitude and direction.
Assuming the filtering indeed flips the sign of the KSZ effect from the
clusters, the direction agrees well also with the results of independent work
using galaxies as tracers at lower distances. We make all maps and cluster
templates derived by us from public data available to the scientific community

Slowing heavy, ground-state molecules using an alternating gradient decelerator
Cold supersonic beams of molecules can be slowed down using a switched
sequence of electrostatic field gradients. The energy to be removed is
proportional to the mass of the molecules. Here we report deceleration of YbF,
which is 7 times heavier than any molecule previously decelerated. We use an
alternating gradient structure to decelerate and focus the molecules in their
ground state. We show that the decelerator exhibits the axial and transverse
stability required to bring these molecules to rest. Our work significantly
extends the range of molecules amenable to this powerful method of cooling and

Measurement of the electron's electric dipole moment using YbF molecules: methods and data analysis
We recently reported a new measurement of the electron's electric dipole
moment using YbF molecules [Nature 473, 493 (2011)]. Here, we give a more
detailed description of the methods used to make this measurement, along with a
fuller analysis of the data. We show how our methods isolate the electric
dipole moment from imperfections in the experiment that might mimic it. We
describe the systematic errors that we discovered, and the small corrections
that we made to account for these. By making a set of additional measurements
with greatly exaggerated experimental imperfections, we find upper bounds on
possible uncorrected systematic errors which we use to determine the systematic
uncertainty in the measurement. We also calculate the size of some systematic
effects that have been important in previous electric dipole moment
measurements, such as the motional magnetic field effect and the geometric
phase, and show them to be negligibly small in the present experiment. Our
result is consistent with an electric dipole moment of zero, so we provide
upper bounds to its size at various confidence levels. Finally, we review the
prospects for future improvements in the precision of the experiment.Comment: 35 pages, 15 figure
IRAS versus POTENT Density Fields on Large Scales: Biasing and Omega
The galaxy density field as extracted from the IRAS 1.2 Jy redshift survey is
compared to the mass density field as reconstructed by the POTENT method from
the Mark III catalog of peculiar velocities. The reconstruction is done with
Gaussian smoothing of radius 12 h^{-1}Mpc, and the comparison is carried out
within volumes of effective radii 31-46 h^{-1}Mpc, containing approximately
10-26 independent samples. Random and systematic errors are estimated from
multiple realizations of mock catalogs drawn from a simulation that mimics the
observed density field in the local universe. The relationship between the two
density fields is found to be consistent with gravitational instability theory
in the mildly nonlinear regime and a linear biasing relation between galaxies
and mass. We measure beta = Omega^{0.6}/b_I = 0.89 \pm 0.12 within a volume of
effective radius 40 h^{-1}Mpc, where b_I is the IRAS galaxy biasing parameter
at 12 h^{-1}Mpc. This result is only weakly dependent on the comparison volume,
suggesting that cosmic scatter is no greater than \pm 0.1. These data are thus
consistent with Omega=1 and b_I\approx 1. If b_I>0.75, as theoretical models of
biasing indicate, then Omega>0.33 at 95% confidence. A comparison with other
estimates of beta suggests scale-dependence in the biasing relation for IRAS
