Subsynchronous instability of a geared centrifugal compressor of overhung design
The original design analysis and shop test data are presented for a three stage (poster) air compressor with impellers mounted on the extensions of a twin pinion gear, and driven by an 8000 hp synchronous motor. Also included are field test data, subsequent rotor dynamics analysis, modifications, and final rotor behavior. A subsynchronous instability existed on a geared, overhung rotor. State-of-the-art rotor dynamics analysis techniques provided a reasonable analytical model of the rotor. A bearing modification arrived at analytically eliminated the instability
Relationships among the phases
The overall flare process involves phenomena characterized as the impulsive and gradual phases, following the X-ray signature first recognized by Kane (1969). In addition, evidence exists for a pre-flare phase in some flares, and recent Solar Maximum Mission data have shown that a post-flare phase, in which extensive and energetically important coronal activity occurs, may also exist. The data to describe the pre-flare and post-flare phases are insufficient to place them properly into an overall picture of the energetics, aside from noting that these phases may indeed be significant from the energetics point of view. What is presently known is reviewed and comments are made about the possible interactions among the flare structures involved
Phase Space Manipulation of Cold Free Radical OH Molecules
We report bunching, slowing, and acceleration of a supersonically cooled beam
of diatomic hydroxyl radicals (OH). \textit{In situ} observation of
laser-induced fluorescence along the beam propagation path allows for detailed
characterization of longitudinal phase-space manipulation of OH molecules
through the Stark effect by precisely sequenced inhomogeneous electric fields.Comment: 5 pages, 4 color figure
Recertification of the air and methane storage vessels at the Langley 8-foot high-temperature structures tunnel
This center operates a number of sophisticated wind tunnels in order to fulfill the needs of its researchers. Compressed air, which is kept in steel storage vessels, is used to power many of these tunnels. Some of these vessels have been in use for many years, and Langley is currently recertifying these vessels to insure their continued structural integrity. One of the first facilities to be recertified under this program was the Langley 8-foot high-temperature structures tunnel. This recertification involved (1) modification, hydrotesting, and inspection of the vessels; (2) repair of all relevant defects; (3) comparison of the original design of the vessel with the current design criteria of Section 8, Division 2, of the 1974 ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code; (4) fracture-mechanics, thermal, and wind-induced vibration analyses of the vessels; and (5) development of operating envelopes and a future inspection plan for the vessels. Following these modifications, analyses, and tests, the vessels were recertified for operation at full design pressure (41.4 MPa (6000 psi)) within the operating envelope developed
Modeling Solar Lyman Alpha Irradiance
Solar Lyman alpha irradiance is estimated from various solar indices using linear regression analyses. Models developed with multiple linear regression analysis, including daily values and 81-day running means of solar indices, predict reasonably well both the short- and long-term variations observed in Lyman alpha. It is shown that the full disk equivalent width of the He line at 1083 nm offers the best proxy for Lyman alpha, and that the total irradiance corrected for sunspot effect also has a high correlation with Lyman alpha
Probing the electron EDM with cold molecules
We present progress towards a new measurement of the electron electric dipole
moment using a cold supersonic beam of YbF molecules. Data are currently being
taken with a sensitivity of . We
therefore expect to make an improvement over the Tl experiment of Commins'
group, which currently gives the most precise result. We discuss the systematic
and statistical errors and comment on the future prospect of making a
measurement at the level of .Comment: 8 pages, 6 figures, proceedings of ICAP 200

Galaxy-Galaxy Lensing in the Hubble Deep Field: The Halo Tully-Fisher Relation at Intermediate Redshift
A tangential distortion of background source galaxies around foreground lens
galaxies in the Hubble Deep Field is detected at the 99.3% confidence level. An
important element of our analysis is the use of photometric redshifts to
determine distances of lens and source galaxies and rest-frame B-band
luminosities of the lens galaxies. The lens galaxy halos obey a Tully-Fisher
relation between halo circular velocity and luminosity; the typical lens
galaxy, at a redshift z = 0.6, has a circular velocity of 210 +/-40 km/s at M_B
= -18.5, if q_0 = 0.5. Control tests, in which lens and source positions and
source ellipticities are randomized, confirm the significance level of the
detection quoted above. Furthermore, a marginal signal is also detected from an
independent, fainter sample of source galaxies without photometric redshifts.
Potential systematic effects, such as contamination by aligned satellite
galaxies, the distortion of source shapes by the light of the foreground
galaxies, PSF anisotropies, and contributions from mass distributed on the
scale of galaxy groups are shown to be negligible. A comparison of our result
with the local Tully-Fisher relation indicates that intermediate-redshift
galaxies are fainter than local spirals by 1.0 +/- 0.6 B mag at a fixed
circular velocity. This is consistent with some spectroscopic studies of the
rotation curves of intermediate-redshift galaxies. This result suggests that
the strong increase in the global luminosity density with redshift is dominated
by evolution in the galaxy number density.Comment: Revised version with minor changes. 13 pages, 7 figures, LaTeX2e,
