    Modeling and Fabrication of Heterogeneous Three-Dimensional Objects Based on Additive Manufacturing

    Heterogeneous object modeling and fabrication has been studied in the past few decades. Recently the idea of digital materials has been demonstrated by using Additive Manufacturing (AM) processes. Our previous study illustrated that the mask-image-projection based Stereolithography (MIP-SL) process is promising in fabricating such heterogeneous objects. In the paper, we present an integrated framework for modeling and fabricating heterogeneous objects based on the MIP-SL process. Our approach can achieve desired grading transmission between different materials in the object by considering the fabrication constraints of the MIP-SL process. The MIP-SL process planning of a heterogeneous model and the hardware setup for its fabrication are also presented. Test cases including physical experiments are performed to demonstrate the possibility of using heterogeneous materials to achieve desired physical properties. Future work on the design and fabrication of objects with heterogeneous materials is also discussed.Mechanical Engineerin

    Numerical Simulation of Aerodynamic Noise of Soundproof Enclosure of Air Compressor Unit

    During the operation of the air compressor unit, the suction and exhaust process of the air compressor and the operation of other equipment will cause air flow pulsation, which is often accompanied by the generation of air compressor noise. Numerical simulation method, as an important means to study the flow field characteristics and noise characteristics of air compressors, has been widely used in recent years. This article takes the noise enclosure of a certain air compressor unit as the research object, and use numerical simulation method to study the air intake part of the enclosure. The influence of inlet louver and suction deflector on the aerodynamic performance of air compressor noise enclosure was analyzed, and the influence of different inlet louver structures and different suction deflector structures on noise was compared. This paper uses the broadband noise model to predict the distribution of air flow pulsation noise. In order to quantitatively study the noise, the FW-H model based on Lighthill\u27s acoustic analogy method was used for the aerodynamic noise simulation, and the frequency response of the aerodynamic noise of air compressor was obtained

    Structure and function of pancreatic lipase-related protein 2 and its relationship with pathological states

    Pancreatic lipase is critical for the digestion and absorption of dietary fats. The most abundant lipolytic enzymes secreted by the pancreas are pancreatic triglyceride lipase (PTL or PNLIP) and its family members, pancreatic lipase-related protein 1 (PNLIPRP1or PLRP1) and pancreatic lipase-related protein 2 (PNLIPRP2 or PLRP2). Unlike the family\u27s other members, PNLIPRP2 plays an elemental role in lipid digestion, especially for newborns. Therefore, if genetic factors cause gene mutation, or other factors lead to non-expression, it may have an effect on fat digestion and absorption, on the susceptibility to pancreas and intestinal pathogens.     How much can we trust GPS wildlife tracking? An assessment in semi-free-ranging Crested Ibis Nipponia nippon

    GPS tracking has been increasingly used for wildlife studies in recent decades, but its performance has not been fully assessed, especially for newly developed lightweight transmitters. We assessed the performance of eight GPS transmitters developed in China by attaching them to Crested Ibises Nipponia nippon confined to two acclimation cages mimicking real habitats. We calculated the distance between GPS locations and the centroid of the cages as the positioning error, and used the 95% (95th percentile) positioning errors to define the accuracy. The positioning success averaged 92.0%, which is much higher than that of previous studies. Locations were not evenly distributed by Location Class (LC), with the LC A and B locations accounting for 88.7%. The observed 95% positioning error in the locations of LC A (9–39 m) and B (11–41 m) was quite accurate, while up to 6.9–8.8% of poor-quality locations were detected in LC C and D with >100 m or even >1, 000 m positioning error. Positioning success and accuracy were different between the test sites, probably due to the difference in vegetation structure. Thus, we argue that the tested transmitters could provide a large proportion of high-quality data for fine-scale studies, and a number of poor-quality locations that need attention. We suggest that the HPOD (horizontal dilution of precision) or PDOP (positional dilution of precision) be reported instead of the LC as a measurement of location accuracy for each location to ensure identification and filtering of implausible locations

    The silver lining of COVID‐19: estimation of short‐term health impacts due to lockdown in the Yangtze River Delta region, China.

    The outbreak of COVID-19 in China has led to massive lockdowns in order to reduce the spread of the epidemic and control human-to-human transmission. Subsequent reductions in various anthropogenic activities have led to improved air quality during the lockdown. In this study, we apply a widely used exposure-response function to estimate the short-term health impacts associated with PM2.5 changes over the Yangtze River Delta (YRD) region due to COVID-19 lockdown. Concentrations of PM2.5 during lockdown period reduced by 22.9% to 54.0% compared to pre-lockdown level. Estimated PM2.5-related daily premature mortality during lockdown period is 895 (95% confidential interval: 637–1,081), which is 43.3% lower than pre-lockdown period and 46.5% lower compared with averages of 2017–2019. According to our calculation, total number of avoided premature death aassociated with PM2.5 reduction during the lockdown is estimated to be 42.4 thousand over the YRD region, with Shanghai, Wenzhou, Suzhou (Jiangsu province), Nanjing, and Nantong being the top five cities with largest health benefits. Avoided premature mortality is mostly contributed by reduced death associated with stroke (16.9 thousand, accounting for 40.0%), ischemic heart disease (14.0 thousand, 33.2%), and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (7.6 thousand, 18.0%). Our calculations do not support or advocate any idea that pandemics produce a positive note to community health. We simply present health benefits from air pollution improvement due to large emission reductions from lowered human and industrial activities. Our results show that continuous efforts to improve air quality are essential to protect public health, especially over city-clusters with dense population

    PTEN Regulates PDGF Ligand Switch for β-PDGFR Signaling in Prostate Cancer

    Platelet-derived growth factor (PDGF) family members are potent growth factors that regulate cell proliferation, migration, and transformation. Clinical studies have shown that both PDGF receptor β (β-PDGFR) and its ligand PDGF D are up-regulated in primary prostate cancers and bone metastases, whereas PDGF B, a classic ligand for β-PDGFR, is not frequently detected in clinical samples. In this study, we examined the role of the tumor suppressor phosphatase and tensin homologue deleted on chromosome 10 (PTEN) in the regulation of PDGF expression levels using both a prostate-specific, conditional PTEN-knockout mouse model and mouse prostate epithelial cell lines established from these mice. We found an increase in PDGF D and β-PDGFR expression levels in PTEN-null tumor cells, accompanied by a decrease in PDGF B expression. Among Akt isoforms, increased Akt3 expression was most prominent in mouse PTEN-null cells, and phosphatidylinositol 3-kinase/Akt activity was essential for the maintenance of increased PDGF D and β-PDGFR expression. In vitro deletion of PTEN resulted in a PDGF ligand switch from PDGF B to PDGF D in normal mouse prostate epithelial cells, further demonstrating that PTEN regulates this ligand switch. Similar associations between PTEN status and PDGF isoforms were noted in human prostate cancer cell lines. Taken together, these results suggest a mechanism by which loss of PTEN may promote prostate cancer progression via PDGF D/β-PDGFR signal transduction

    Alkali metal ions transfer across the water/1,2-dichloroethane interface facilitated by a series of crown ethers

    National Basic Research Program of China [2011CB933700, 2012CB932900]; National Science Foundation of China [NSFC21061120456, 21021002, 20973142]; National Project 985 of High Education; Chinese GovernmentThe facilitated transfer of alkali metal ions (Li+ and Na+) across the water/1,2-dichloroethane (W/1,2-DCE) interface was studied by using a series of crown ethers as ionophores: 4'-ethynylbenzo-15-crown-5-ether (L1), 3',6'-diethynylbenzo-15-crown-5-ether (L2) and 4',5'-diethynylbenzo-15-crown-5-ether (L3). Cyclic voltammetry was employed to study the electrochemical behaviour of the facilitated ion transfer across the W/1,2-DCE interface supported at the tip of a micropipette. The diffusion coefficients of the ionophores in the 1,2-DCE phase were determined, while the metal-ligand complexes formed by these ions with all the ionophores were obtained to be in a 1 : 1 stoichiometric ratio. The association constants, log beta degrees, for complexes LiL1(+), LiL2(+), LiL3(+), NaL1(+), NaL2(+) and NaL3(+) were calculated to be 3.3, 4.2, 4.0, 2.1, 3.5 and 2.2, respectively. The theoretical calculations have shown that the conjugated constituent groups on the benzene ring have an essential effect on the spatial structures of the crown ether rings, which determine the supramolecular interaction between the ions and ionophores
