    No casual relationship between T2DM and the risk of infectious diseases: A two-sample mendelian randomization study

    Background: In epidemiological studies, it has been proven that the occurrence of type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) is related to an increased risk of infectious diseases. However, it is still unclear whether the relationship is casual. Methods: We employed a two-sample Mendelian randomization (MR) to clarify the causal effect of T2DM on high-frequency infectious diseases: sepsis, skin and soft tissue infections (SSTIs), urinary tract infections (UTIs), pneumonia, and genito-urinary infection (GUI) in pregnancy. And then, we analyzed the genome-wide association study (GWAS) meta-analysis of European-descent individuals and conducted T2DM-related single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) as instrumental variables (IVs) that were associated with genome-wide significance (p \u3c 5 × 10–8). MR estimates were obtained using the inverse variance-weighted (IVW), the MR-Egger regression, the simple mode (SM), weighted median, and weighted mode. Results: The UK Biobank (UKB) cohort (n \u3e 500,000) provided data for GWASs on infectious diseases. MR analysis showed little evidence of a causal relationship of T2DM with five mentioned infections’ (sepsis, SSTI, UTI, pneumonia, and GUI in pregnancy) susceptibility [odds ratio (OR) = 0.99999, p = 0.916; OR = 0.99986, p = 0.233; OR = 0.99973, p = 0.224; OR = 0.99997, p = 0.686; OR, 1.00002, p = 0.766]. Sensitivity analysis showed similar results, indicating the robustness of causality. There were no heterogeneity and pleiotropic bias. Conclusion: T2DM would not be causally associated with high-frequency infectious diseases (including sepsis, SSTI, UTI, pneumonia, and GUI in pregnancy)

    Differences in Intrinsic Brain Abnormalities Between Patients With Left- and Right-Sided Long-Term Hearing Impairment

    Unilateral hearing impairment is characterized by asymmetric hearing input, which causes bilateral unbalanced auditory afferents and tinnitus of varying degrees. Long-term hearing imbalance can cause functional reorganization in the brain. However, differences between intrinsic functional changes in the brains of patients with left- and those with right-sided long-term hearing impairments are incompletely understood. This study included 67 patients with unilateral hearing impairments (left-sided, 33 patients; right-sided, 34 patients) and 32 healthy controls. All study participants underwent blood oxygenation level dependent resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging and T1-weighted imaging with three-dimensional fast spoiled gradient-echo sequences. After data preprocessing, fractional amplitude of low frequency (fALFF) and functional connectivity (FC) analyses were used to evaluate differences between patients and healthy controls. When compared with the right-sided hearing impairment group, the left-sided hearing impairment group showed significantly higher fALFF values in the left superior parietal gyrus, right inferior parietal lobule, and right superior frontal gyrus, whereas it showed significantly lower fALFF values in the left Heschl’s gyrus, right supramarginal gyrus, and left superior frontal gyrus. In the left-sided hearing impairment group, paired brain regions with enhanced FC were the left Heschl’s gyrus and right supramarginal gyrus, left Heschl’s gyrus and left superior parietal gyrus, left superior parietal gyrus and right inferior parietal lobule, right inferior parietal lobule and right superior frontal gyrus, and left and right superior frontal gyri. In the left-sided hearing impairment group, the FC of the paired brain regions correlated negatively with the duration and pure tone audiometry were in the left Heschl’s gyrus and right supramarginal gyrus. In the right-sided hearing impairment group, the FC of the paired brain regions correlated negatively with the duration was in the left Heschl’s gyrus and superior parietal gyrus, and with pure tone audiometry was right inferior parietal lobule and superior frontal gyrus. The intrinsic reintegration mechanisms of the brain appeared to differ between patients with left-sided hearing impairment and those with right-sided hearing impairment, and the severity of hearing impairment was associated with differences in functional integration in certain brain regions

    A landslide susceptibility map based on spatial scale segmentation: A case study at Zigui-Badong in the Three Gorges Reservoir Area, China.

    China experiences frequent landslides, and therefore there is a need for landslide susceptibility maps (LSMs) to effectively analyze and predict regional landslides. However, the traditional methods of producing an LSM are unable to account for different spatial scales, resulting in spatial imbalances. In this study, Zigui-Badong in the Three Gorges Reservoir Area was used as a case study, and data was obtained from remote sensing images, digital elevation model, geological and topographic maps, and landslide surveys. A geographic weighted regression (GWR) was applied to segment the study area into different spatial scales, with three basic principles followed when the GWR model was applied for this propose. As a result, 58 environmental factors were extracted, and 18 factors were selected as LSM factors. Three of the most important factors (channel network basic level, elevation, and distance to river) were used as segmentation factors to segment the study area into 18 prediction regions. The particle swarm optimization (PSO) algorithm was used to optimize the parameters of a support vector machine (SVM) model for each prediction region. All of the prediction regions were merged to construct a GWR-PSO-SVM coupled model and finally, an LSM of the study area was produced. To verify the effectiveness of the proposed method, the outcomes of the GWR-PSO-SVM coupled model and the PSO-SVM coupled model were compared using three evaluation methods: specific category accuracy analysis, overall prediction accuracy analysis, and area under the curve analysis. The results for the GWR-PSO-SVM coupled model for these three evaluation methods were 85.75%, 87.86%, and 0.965, respectively, while the results for the traditional PSO-SVM coupled model were 68.35%, 84.44%, and 0.944, respectively. The method proposed in this study based on a spatial scale segmentation therefore acquired good results

    Association between serum apolipoprotein A1 and atrial fibrillation in the Chinese population: a case–control study

    Abstract Background The relationship between serum apolipoprotein A1 (APOA1) and atrial fibrillation (AF) is not known. Therefore, we sought to investigate the associations between APOA1 and AF in the Chinese population. Methods This case–control study included 950 patients with AF (29–83 years old, 50.42% male) who were hospitalized consecutively in China between January 2019 and September 2021. Controls with sinus rhythm and without AF were matched (1:1) to cases by sex and age. Pearson correlation analysis was performed to investigate the correlation between APOA1 and blood lipid profiles. Multivariate regression models were used to explore the association between APOA1 and AF. The receiver operator characteristic (ROC) curve was constructed to examine the performance of APOA1. Results Multivariate regression analysis showed that low serum APOA1 in men and women with AF was significantly associated with AF (OR = 0.261, 95% CI: 0.162–0.422, P < 0.001). Pearson correlation analysis indicated that serum APOA1 was positively correlated with total cholesterol (TC) (r = 0.456, p < 0.001), low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) (r = 0.825, p < 0.001), high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C) (r = 0.238, p < 0.001), and apolipoprotein B (APOB) (r = 0.083, p = 0.011). ROC curve analysis showed that APOA1 levels of 1.105 g/L and 1.205 g/L were the optimal cut-off values for predicting AF in males and females, respectively. Conclusion Low APOA1 in male and female patients is significantly associated with AF in the Chinese population of non-statin users. APOA1 may be a potential biomarker for AF and contribute to the pathological progression of AF along with low blood lipid profiles. Potential mechanisms remain to be further explored

    We present an r package, ggtree, which provides programmable visualization and annotation of phylogenetic trees. ggtree can read more tree file formats than other softwares, including newick, nexus, NHX, phylip and jplace formats, and support visualization of phylo, multiphylo, phylo4, phylo4d, obkdata and phyloseq tree objects defined in other r packages. It can also extract the tree/branch/node-specific and other data from the analysis outputs of beast, epa, hyphy, paml, phylodog, pplacer, r8s, raxml and revbayes software, and allows using these data to annotate the tree. The package allows colouring and annotation of a tree by numerical/categorical node attributes, manipulating a tree by rotating, collapsing and zooming out clades, highlighting user selected clades or operational taxonomic units and exploration of a large tree by zooming into a selected portion. A two-dimensional tree can be drawn by scaling the tree width based on an attribute of the nodes. A tree can be annotated with an associated numerical matrix (as a heat map), multiple sequence alignment, subplots or silhouette images. The package ggtree is released under the artistic-2.0 license.     Application of Coagulation–Membrane Rotation to Improve Ultrafiltration Performance in Drinking Water Treatment

    The combination of conventional and advanced water treatment is now widely used in drinking water treatment. However, membrane fouling is still the main obstacle to extend its application. In this study, the impact of the combination of coagulation and ultrafiltration (UF) membrane rotation on both fouling control and organic removal of macro (sodium alginate, SA) and micro organic matters (tannic acid, TA) was studied comprehensively to evaluate its applicability in drinking water treatment. The results indicated that membrane rotation could generate shear stress and vortex, thus effectively reducing membrane fouling of both SA and TA solutions, especially for macro SA organics. With additional coagulation, the membrane fouling could be further reduced through the aggregation of mediate and macro organic substances into flocs and elimination by membrane retention. For example, with the membrane rotation speed of 60 r/min, the permeate flux increased by 90% and the organic removal by 35% in SA solution, with 40 mg/L coagulant dosage, with an additional 70% increase of flux and 5% increment of organic removal to 80% obtained. However, too much shear stress could intensify the potential of fiber breakage at the potting, destroying the flocs and resulting in the reduction of permeate flux and deterioration of effluent quality. Finally, the combination of coagulation and membrane rotation would lead to the shaking of the cake layer, which is beneficial for fouling mitigation and prolongation of membrane filtration lifetime. This study provides useful information on applying the combined process of conventional coagulation and the hydrodynamic shear force for drinking water treatment, which can be further explored in the future

    Efficacy and safety of sonothombolysis versus non-sonothombolysis in patients with acute ischemic stroke: A meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials.

    Recent studies have shown that inconsistent results of safety and efficacy between sonothombolysis vs. non-sonothombolysis in acute ischemic stroke (AIS). We implemented a meta-analysis to explore the value of sonothrombolysis in AIS treatment. The MEDLINE, EMBASE, and Cochrane Library databases were searched for randomized controlled trials (RCTs) which had evaluated sonothrombolysis or ultrasound thrombolysis in AIS. One hundred five studies were retrieved and analyzed, among them, 7 RCTs were included in the current meta-analysis. In comparison with the non-sonothombolysis, sonothrombolysis significantly improved complete recanalization (RR 2.16, 95% CI 1.51 to 3.08, P 15", "Treatment time ≤ 150min", and "Age ≤ 65 years" are potential favorable factors for efficacy outcomes of sonothombolysis. Sonothrombolysis can significantly increase the rate of recanalization in patients with AIS compared with non-sonothrombolysis, but there is no significant effect on improving neurological functional recovery and avoiding complications
