A Study of English Vocabulary Learning in China—From the Perspective of Conceptual Metaphor Theory

    Get PDF
Vocabulary plays an essential role in foreign language learning, and it is the same with Chinese students’ learning English. However, in China traditional ways of English vocabulary learning focuses on the recitation and analysis of the sound, spelling and meaning of English words without considering their cognitive motivations and thus makes understanding and memorization of them invalid and boring, which directly affects Chinese students’ English level of listening, speaking, reading and writing. Therefore, some effective methods of English vocabulary learning must be found so as to arouse students’ interests and facilitate their learning of English words. Conceptual metaphor theory reveals that metaphor is not only a universal cognitive phenomenon but also a cognitive tool of human beings, which can shed some lights onto English words learning, a kind of cognitive activity. Conceptual metaphor theory also depicts cross-domain mapping as its working mechanism by saying that cross-domain mapping is a kind of thinking link from source domain to target domain. And this thinking link is of great help to the memorizing processes of words and understanding of words’ connotation and can make English vocabulary learning systematic and flexible. This paper explores the application of conceptual metaphor theory into college English vocabulary learning from three aspects, namely, polysemous words, idiomatic expressions and word connections, aiming at cultivating students’ metaphorical awareness and improving their metaphorical competence in vocabulary learning

Adaptive Constraint Partition based Optimization Framework for Large-scale Integer Linear Programming(Student Abstract)

Integer programming problems (IPs) are challenging to be solved efficiently due to the NP-hardness, especially for large-scale IPs. To solve this type of IPs, Large neighborhood search (LNS) uses an initial feasible solution and iteratively improves it by searching a large neighborhood around the current solution. However, LNS easily steps into local optima and ignores the correlation between variables to be optimized, leading to compromised performance. This paper presents a general adaptive constraint partition-based optimization framework (ACP) for large-scale IPs that can efficiently use any existing optimization solver as a subroutine. Specifically, ACP first randomly partitions the constraints into blocks, where the number of blocks is adaptively adjusted to avoid local optima. Then, ACP uses a subroutine solver to optimize the decision variables in a randomly selected block of constraints to enhance the variable correlation. ACP is compared with LNS framework with different subroutine solvers on four IPs and a real-world IP. The experimental results demonstrate that in specified wall-clock time ACP shows better performance than SCIP and Gurobi.Comment: To be published in AAAI2023 Student Abstrac

Ionic Liquids as Bifunctional Cosolvents Enhanced CO2 Conversion Catalysed by NADH-Dependent Formate Dehydrogenase

    Get PDF
Efficient CO2 conversion by formate dehydrogenase is limited by the low CO2 concentrations that can be reached in traditional buffers. The use of ionic liquids was proposed as a manner to increase CO2 concentration in the reaction system. It has been found, however, that the required cofactor (NADH) heavily degraded during the enzymatic reaction and that acidity was the main reason. Acidity, indeed, resulted in reduction of the conversion of CO2 into formic acid and contributed to overestimate the amount of formic acid produced when the progression of the reaction was followed by a decrease in NADH absorbance (method N). Stability of NADH and the mechanism of NADH degradation was investigated by UV, NMR and by DFT calculations. It was found that by selecting neutral-basic ionic liquids and by adjusting the concentration of the ionic liquid in the buffer, the concentration of NADH can be maintained in the reaction system with little loss. Conversion of CO2 to methanol in BmimBF(4) (67.1%) was more than twice as compared with the conversion attained by the enzymatic reaction in phosphate buffer (24.3%)

A Novel Immune-Related Prognostic Signature in Head and Neck Squamous Cell Carcinoma

The immune response within the tumor microenvironment plays a key role in tumorigenesis and determines the clinical outcomes of head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC). However, to date, very limited robust and reliable immunological biomarkers have been developed that are capable of estimating prognosis in HNSCC patients. In this study, we aimed to identify the effects of novel immune-related gene signatures (IRGs) that can predict HNSCC prognosis. Based on gene expression profiles and clinical data of HNSCC patient cohorts from The Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA) and Gene Expression Omnibus (GEO) database, a total of 439 highly variable expressed immune-related genes (including 239 upregulated and 200 downregulated genes) were identified by using differential gene expression analysis. Pathway enrichment analysis indicated that these immune-related differentially expressed genes were enriched in inflammatory functions. After process screening in the training TCGA cohort, six immune-related genes (PLAU, STC2, TNFRSF4, PDGFA, DKK1, and CHGB) were significantly associated with overall survival (OS) based on the LASSO Cox regression model. Integrating these genes with clinicopathological features, a multivariable model was built and suggested better performance in determining patients’ OS in the testing cohort, and the independent validation cohort. In conclusion, a well-established model encompassing both immune-related gene signatures and clinicopathological factors would serve as a promising tool for the prognostic prediction of HNSCC

Effect of Oat β-Glucan on Gel Properties of Low-Salt Mutton Mince

Oat β-glucan (OG) was used to replace salt in mutton mince at levels of 0%, 0.4%, 0.8%, 1.2% and 1.6%. To determine the appropriate level of OG replacement, the cooking loss, water-holding capacity (WHC), water distribution and content, color, gel strength, texture, secondary structure of myofibrillar protein, scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of mince samples with 2.0% salt, 0.4% OG + 1.6% salt, 0.8% OG + 1.2% salt, 1.2% OG + 0.8% salt and 1.6% OG + 0.4% salt were measured. The results showed that with increasing level of OG replacement, the cooking loss of mutton mince gels decreased first and then increased gradually, while the WHC showed the opposite trend. A significant decrease in the WHC was observed when 1.6% OG was added (P 0.05). The secondary structure of myofibrillar protein in the gel with high levels of OG replacement (> 0.8%) was similar to that in the control (P > 0.05), and the SEM image showed more loose structure with increased porosity. Through correlation analysis and principal component analysis (PCA), it was found that the synthetic score of the gel with 0.4% OG was higher than that of the other groups, which could ensure further reduction of salt intake while maintaining the gel quality of mutton mince

    Get PDF
Background/Aims: HOTTIP is a critical modulator in human diseases including liver cancer, but its role and molecular biological mechanisms in liver fibrosis are still unclear. Methods: The expression profile of HOTTIP during the progression of liver fibrosis was detected in human liver samples and in CCl4-treated mice using qRT-PCR. The expressing sh-HOTTIP adenoviral vector was used to reduce HOTTIP levels in vivo. Dual-Luciferase Reporter Assay was performed to validate the interaction between miR-148a and HOTTIP, TGFBR1, or TGFBR2. Results: HOTTIP expressions in fibrotic liver samples and cirrhotic liver samples were significantly upregulated compared with healthy liver controls, and cirrhotic samples exhibited the highest levels of HOTTIP. Moreover, HOTTIP expressions were substantially induced in the liver tissues and hepatic stellate cells (HSC) of CCl4-treated mice. Ad-shHOTTIP delivery could alleviate CCl4- induced liver fibrosis in mice. Down-regulation of HOTTIP inhibited the viability and activation of HSCs in vitro, and HOTTIP negatively regulated miR-148a expression in HSCs. miR-148a had a negative effect on HSC activation by targeting TGFBR1 and TGFBR2. Conclusion: HOTTIP is involved in the progression of liver fibrosis by promoting HSC activation. The high level of HOTTIP downregulates miR-148a, thus to increase the level of TGFBR1 and TGFBR2 and contribute to liver fibrosis
