    Watching Iron Nanoparticles Rust: An In Situ X-ray Absorption Spectroscopic Study

    NSERCPeer ReviewedIron nanoparticles and iron oxide nanoparticles are among the most commonly studied nanomaterials because of their applications in fields ranging from catalysis to ferrofluids. However, many synthetic methods give iron nanoparticles with large size distributions, and it is difficult to follow the kinetics of iron nanoparticle oxidation reactions and the relative speciation of iron oxidation states in real time. Herein, we introduce a simple approach of controlling the sizes of Fe@FexOy nanoparticles and a novel method for following Fe@FexOy nanoparticle oxidation in situ in liquid solutions by Fe K- and L-edge X-ray absorption near-edge structure (XANES) spectroscopy. XANES results show that these Fe@FexOy nanoparticles have similar XANES spectra before exposure to air. In situ XANES measurements allow for quantitative oxidation kinetics of different nanoparticle sizes to be followed; results show that the rate of Fe(0) oxidation increases with a decrease in average nanoparticle size. However, the rate of Fe core size depletion was found to be ca. 0.02 nm/min for all the nanoparticle systems studied. This suggests similar oxidation mechanisms are at work for all the particle sizes studied.     The Role of Personality and Subjective Exposure Experiences in Posttraumatic Stress Disorder and Depression Symptoms among Children Following Wenchuan Earthquake

    This study aims to investigate the role of personality traits and subjective exposure experiences in posttraumatic stress disorder and depression symptoms. In Qingchuan, 21,652 children aged 7 to 15 years were assessed using face-to-face interviews one year after the Wenchuan earthquake in China. The Junior Eysenck Personality Questionnaire, a modified earthquake exposure scale, the UCLA Posttraumatic Stress Disorder Reaction Index (adolescent), and the Adolescent Depression Inventory were used to assess personality characteristics, trauma experiences, posttraumatic stress disorder and depression symptoms, respectively. The measurement was completed with 20,749 children. After adjusting for other factors by multinomial logistic regression analysis, neuroticism, having felt unable to escape from the disaster and having been trapped for a longer time were risk factors of posttraumatic stress disorder and depression symptoms. Socialization was a protective factor of them. Having felt extreme panic or fear was a risk factor of posttraumatic stress disorder symptoms. For depression symptoms, introversion and psychoticism were risk factors, and extraversion was a protective factor. This study was conducted with the largest representative sample of child survivors of a natural, devastating disaster in a developing country. These results could be useful for planning psychological intervention strategies for children and for influencing further research.link_to_OA_fulltex

This study aimed to decipher and compare the postoperative recurrent patterns and the risk factors contributing to recurrence between MVI positive (MVI(+)) and MVI negative (MVI(-)) HCC after hepatectomy.Patients and methods: Patients with HCC who underwent hepatectomy in three Chinese academic hospitals between January 1, 2009, and December 31, 2018, were enrolled. Recurrent patterns included early (≤ 2 years) or late (> 2 years) recurrence, recurrent sites and number, and risk factors of recurrence were compared between the MVI(+)and MVI(-) groups by propensity score–matching (PSM).Results: Of 1756 patients included, 581 (33.1%) were MVI(+), and 875 (49.8%) patients developed early recurrence. Compared with the MVI(-) group, the MVI(+) group had a higher 2-year recurrence rate in the PSM cohort (hazard ratio [HR], 1.82; 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.59– 2.10; P < 0.001), and more patients with multiple tumor recurrence. Patients with early recurrence in the MVI(+) group had a worse overall survival (OS) than those in the MVI(-) group (HR, 1.24; 95% CI, 1.02– 1.50; P = 0.034). Resection margin (RM) ≤ 1.0 cm is a surgical predictor of early recurrence for the MVI(+) group (HR, 0.68; 95% CI, 0.54– 0.87; P = 0.002), but not for the MVI(-) group.Conclusion: Compared to MVI(-) HCC, MVI(+) HCC tends to be early, multiple recurrence and lung and lymph node metastasis after resection. RM ≤ 1.0 cm is a surgical risk factor of early recurrence for patient with MVI.Keywords: hepatocellular carcinoma, microvascular invasion, recurrence patterns, risk factors, outcome

    Discrete and continuum third quantization of Gravity

    We give a brief introduction to matrix models and the group field theory (GFT) formalism as realizations of the idea of a third quantization of gravity, and present in some more detail the idea and basic features of a continuum third quantization formalism in terms of a field theory on the space of connections, building up on the results of loop quantum gravity that allow to make the idea slightly more concrete. We explore to what extent one can rigorously define such a field theory. Concrete examples are given for the simple case of Riemannian GR in 3 spacetime dimensions.     Association of Mineralocorticoid Receptor Antagonists With the Mortality and Cardiovascular Effects in Dialysis Patients: A Meta-analysis

    Whether Mineralocorticoid receptor antagonists (MRA) reduce mortality and cardiovascular effects of dialysis patients remains unclear. A meta-analysis was designed to investigate whether MRA reduce mortality and cardiovascular effects of dialysis patients, with a registration in INPLASY (INPLASY2020120143). The meta-analysis revealed that MRA significantly reduced all-cause mortality (ACM) and cardiovascular mortality (CVM). Patients receiving MRA presented improved left ventricular mass index (LVMI) and left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF), decreased systolic blood pressure (SBP) and diastolic blood pressure (DBP). There was no significant difference in the serum potassium level between the MRA group and the placebo group. MRA vs. control exerts definite survival and cardiovascular benefits in dialysis patients, including reducing all-cause mortality and cardiovascular mortality, LVMI, and arterial blood pressure, and improving LVEF. In terms of safety, MRA did not increase serum potassium levels for dialysis patients with safety.     Mice lacking NF-κB1 exhibit marked DNA damage responses and more severe gastric pathology in response to intraperitoneal tamoxifen administration

    Tamoxifen (TAM) has recently been shown to cause acute gastric atrophy and metaplasia in mice. We have previously demonstrated that the outcome of Helicobacter felis infection, which induces similar gastric lesions in mice, is altered by deletion of specific NF-κB subunits. Nfkb1-/- mice developed more severe gastric atrophy than wild-type (WT) mice 6 weeks after H. felis infection. In contrast, Nfkb2-/- mice were protected from this pathology. We therefore hypothesized that gastric lesions induced by TAM may be similarly regulated by signaling via NF-κB subunits. Groups of five female C57BL/6 (WT), Nfkb1-/-, Nfkb2-/- and c-Rel-/- mice were administered 150 mg/kg TAM by IP injection. Seventy-two hours later, gastric corpus tissues were taken for quantitative histological assessment. In addition, groups of six female WT and Nfkb1-/- mice were exposed to 12 Gy γ-irradiation. Gastric epithelial apoptosis was quantified 6 and 48 h after irradiation. TAM induced gastric epithelial lesions in all strains of mice, but this was more severe in Nfkb1-/- mice than in WT mice. Nfkb1-/- mice exhibited more severe parietal cell loss than WT mice, had increased gastric epithelial expression of Ki67 and had an exaggerated gastric epithelial DNA damage response as quantified by γH2AX. To investigate whether the difference in gastric epithelial DNA damage response of Nfkb1-/- mice was unique to TAM-induced DNA damage or a generic consequence of DNA damage, we also assessed gastric epithelial apoptosis following γ-irradiation. Six hours after γ-irradiation, gastric epithelial apoptosis was increased in the gastric corpus and antrum of Nfkb1-/- mice. NF-κB1-mediated signaling regulates the development of gastric mucosal pathology following TAM administration. This is associated with an exaggerated gastric epithelial DNA damage response. This aberrant response appears to reflect a more generic sensitization of the gastric mucosa of Nfkb1-/- mice to DNA damage

    Synthesis and characterization of hybrid organic-inorganic materials based on sulphonated polyamideimide and silica

    The preparation of hybrid organic–inorganic membrane materials based on a sulphonated polyamideimide resin and silica filler has been studied. The method allows the sol–gel process to proceed in the presence of a high molecular weight polyamideimide, resulting in well dispersed silica nanoparticles (<50 nm) within the polymer matrix with chemical bonding between the organic and inorganic phases. Tetraethoxysilane (TEOS) was used as the silica precursor and the organosilicate networks were bonded to the polymer matrix via a coupling agent aminopropyltriethoxysilane (APTrEOS). The structure and properties of these hybrid materials were characterized via a range of techniques including FTIR, TGA, DSC, SEM and contact angle analysis. It was found that the compatibility between organic and inorganic phases has been greatly enhanced by the incorporation of APTrEOS. The thermal stability and hydrophilic properties of hybrid materials have also been significantly improved
