    Comparison of blind source separation methods in fast somatosensory-evoked potential detection

    Blind source separation (BSS) is a promising method for extracting somatosensory-evoked potential (SEP). Although various BSS algorithms are available for SEP extraction, few studies have addressed the performance differences between them. In this study, we compared the performance of a number of typical BSS algorithms on SEP extraction from both computer simulations and clinical experiment. The algorithms we compared included second-order blind identification, estimation of signal parameters via rotation invariance technique, algorithm for multiple unknown signals extraction, joint approximate diagonalization of eigenmatrices, extended infomax, and fast independent component analysis. The performances of these BSS algorithms were determined by the correlation coefficients between the true and the extracted SEP signals. There were significant differences in the performances of the various BSS algorithms in a simulation study. In summary, second-order blind identification using six covariance matrix denoting SOBI6 was recommended as the most appropriate BSS method for fast SEP extraction from noisy backgrounds.     Chemical constituent analysis of the crown-of-thorns starfish Acanthaster planci and potential utilization value of the starfish as feed ingredient for animals

    The crown-of-thorns starfish Acanthaster planci is a major management issue on coral reefs and the exploring of effective control methods to the starfish is an interesting goal. In this study, the chemical constituent of the starfish were analyzed and the toxicity of the starfish was tested when it was used as mice diet. The results showed that protein content of the starfish was 19.8 to 22.0% of dry weight and the amino acid composition was similar to that of fish meal. Though the starfish had little fatty acids (<1%), the fatty acids contained rich variety and unsaturated fatty acids on average accounted for more than 60% of total fatty acids. In addition, per gram (dry weight) of the starfish contained 65.4 to 97.4 μg astaxanthin, which was higher than that of shrimps. The starfish used as the feed for mice did not have negative influence on the growth and the health of the mice. Based on these results, we consider that the crown-of-thorns starfish A. planci has the potential to be an ingredient for animal feeds, thus reducing the usage of fish meal, fish oil and carotenoids.     Synthesis, structure, and magnetism in the ferromagnet La_{3}MnAs_{5}: Well-separated spin chains coupled via itinerant electrons

    In this work, we systematically report the synthesis, structure, and magnetism of a compound of filled anti-Mn3Si5 type La3MnAs5. It crystallizes in a hexagonal structure with the space group of P63/mcm (193). The structure consists of face-sharing MnAs6 octahedral chains along the c axis, which are well separated by a large distance of 8.9913 Å, demonstrating a strong one-dimensional (1D) structural character. Physical property measurements indicate that La3MnAs5 is a ferromagnetic metal with TC ∼ 112 K. Due to the short-range intrachain spin coupling, the susceptibility deviates from the Curie-Weiss behavior in a wide temperature window and the magnetic entropy corresponding to the ferromagnetic transition is significantly lower than that expected from the fully saturated state. The magnetic critical behavior studies show that La3MnAs5 can be described by the three-dimensional Heisenberg model. The orbital hybridization between the 1D MnAs6 chain and intermediate La atom near the Fermi level reveals that the itinerant electrons play a key role in transmitting spin interaction among the MnAs6 spin chains. Our results indicate that La3MnAs5 is a rare ferromagnetic metal with well-separated spin chains, which provides a good opportunity to study the mechanism of interchain spin coupling via itinerant electrons

    Tear proteomic analysis of Sjogren syndrome patients with dry eye syndrome by two-dimensional-nano-liquid chromatography coupled with tandem mass spectrometry

    We examined the tear film proteome of patients with Sjögren's syndrome (SS) and dry eye syndrome (group A), patients with dry eye symptoms (group B) and normal volunteers (group C). Tear samples were pooled from 8 subjects from each group and were subjected to two-dimensional-nano-liquid chromatography coupled with tandem mass spectrometry (2D-nano-LC-MS/MS). The tear breakup time for group A was significantly reduced compared with group B and C (P < 0.001). Group A (Schirmer I test, 2.13 +/- 2.38 mm/5 min) had markedly lower tear volume than group B (5.94 +/- 4.75 mm/5 min) and C (14.44 +/- 6.57 mm/5 min) (P < 0.001). Group A had significantly higher normalized tear protein content (1.8291 +/- 0.2241 mu g/mm) than group B (1.0839 +/- 0.1120 mu g/mm) (P = 0.001) and C (0.2028 +/- 0.0177 mu g/mm) (P = 0.001). The 2D-nano-LC-MS/MS analysis identified a total of 435 proteins, including 182 (54.8%),247 (74.4%) and 278 (83.7%) in group A, B, and C, respectively, with 56 (16.7%) proteins including defensin alpha 1, clusterin and lactotransferrin unique to group A. In conclusion, dry eye syndrome in SS patients is associated with an altered proteomic profile with dysregulated expression of proteins involved in a variety of important cellular process including inflammation, immunity, and oxidative stress

    Prevalence of urinary incontinence in middle-aged and elderly adults in 10 areas in China

    Objective: To describe the population and area distribution differences in the prevalence of urinary incontinence in middle-aged and elderly adults in 10 areas in China. Methods: A total of 24 913 participants aged 45-95 years who completed the third resurvey of China Kadoorie Biobank during 2020-2021 were included. The prevalence of urinary incontinence was assessed by an interviewer-administered questionnaire, and urinary incontinence was classified as only stress urinary incontinence, only urgency urinary incontinence and mixed urinary incontinence. The prevalence of urinary incontinence and its subtypes were reported by sex, age and area, and the severity of urinary incontinence and treatment were described. Results: The average age of the participants was (65.4±9.1) years. According to the seventh national census data in 2020, the age-standardized prevalence rates of urinary incontinence was 25.4% in women and 7.0% in men. The age-standardized prevalence rates of only stress, only urgency and mixed incontinence were 1.7%, 4.2% and 1.2% in men and 13.5%, 5.8% and 6.1% in women, respectively. The prevalence rates of urinary incontinence and all subtypes in men and the prevalence of urinary incontinence and all subtypes except only stress urinary incontinence in women all increased with age ( P<0.001). After adjusting for age, the prevalence of urinary incontinence in both men and women were higher in rural area than in urban area ( P<0.001). The treatment rates in men and women with urinary incontinence were 15.4% and 8.5%, respectively. Conclusions: The prevalence of urinary incontinence was high in middle-aged and elderly adults in China, and the prevalence rate was higher in women than in men, but the treatment rate of urinary incontinence was low

    Construction of Vascular Tissues with Macro-Porous Nano-Fibrous Scaffolds and Smooth Muscle Cells Enriched from Differentiated Embryonic Stem Cells

    Vascular smooth muscle cells (SMCs) have been broadly used for constructing tissue-engineered blood vessels. However, the availability of mature SMCs from donors or patients is very limited. Derivation of SMCs by differentiating embryonic stem cells (ESCs) has been reported, but not widely utilized in vascular tissue engineering due to low induction efficiency and, hence, low SMC purity. To address these problems, SMCs were enriched from retinoic acid induced mouse ESCs with LacZ genetic labeling under the control of SM22α promoter as the positive sorting marker in the present study. The sorted SMCs were characterized and then cultured on three-dimensional macro-porous nano-fibrous scaffolds in vitro or implanted subcutaneously into nude mice after being seeded on the scaffolds. Our data showed that the LacZ staining, which reflected the corresponding SMC marker SM22α expression level, was efficient as a positive selection marker to dramatically enrich SMCs and eliminate other cell types. After the sorted cells were seeded into the three-dimensional nano-fibrous scaffolds, continuous retinoic acid treatment further enhanced the SMC marker gene expression level while inhibited pluripotent maker gene expression level during the in vitro culture. Meanwhile, after being implanted subcutaneously into nude mice, the implanted cells maintained the positive LacZ staining within the constructs and no teratoma formation was observed. In conclusion, our results demonstrated the potential of SMCs derived from ESCs as a promising cell source for therapeutic vascular tissue engineering and disease model applications
