    A New Approximation Method for Constant Weight Coding and Its Hardware Implementation

    In this chapter, a more memory-efficient method for encoding binary information into words of prescribed length and weight is presented. The solutions in existing work include complex float point arithmetic or extra memory overhead which make it demanding for resource-constrained computing platform. The solution we propose here solves the problems above yet achieves better coding efficiency. We also correct a crucial error in previous implementations of code-based cryptography by exploiting and tweaking the proposed encoder. For the time being, the design presented in this work is the most compact one for any code-based encryption schemes. We show, for instance, that our lightweight implementation of Niederreiter encrypting unit can encrypt approximately 1 million plaintexts per second on a Xilinx Virtex-6 FPGA, requiring 183 slices and 18 memory blocks

    Nonlinear paramagnetic magnetization in the mixed state of CeCoIn_5

    Torque and magnetization measurements in magnetic fields HH up to 14 T were performed on CeCoIn5_5 single crystals. The amplitude of the paramagnetic torque shows an H2.3H^{2.3} dependence in the mixed state and an H2H^{2} dependence in the normal state. In addition, the mixed-state magnetizations for both H∄cH\parallel c and H∄abH\parallel ab axes show anomalous behavior after the subtraction of the corresponding paramagnetic contributions as linear extrapolations of the normal-state magnetization. These experimental results point towards a nonlinear paramagnetic magnetization in the mixed state of CeCoIn5_5, which is a result of the fact that both orbital and Pauli limiting effects dominate in the mixed state.Comment: 2 pages, 2 figures, conferenc

    Repulsion and attraction in high Tc superconductors

    The influence of repulsion and attraction in high-Tc superconductors to the gap functions is studied. A systematic method is proposed to compute the gap functions using the irreducible representations of the point group. It is found that a pure s-wave superconductivity exists only at very low temperatures, and attractive potentials on the near shells significantly expand the gap functions and increase significantly the critical temperature of superconductivity. A strong on-site repulsion drives the A1gA_{1g} gap into a B1gB_{1g} gap. It is expected that superconductivity with the A1gA_{1g} symmetry reaches a high critical temperature due to the cooperation of the on-site and the next-nearest neighbor attractions.Comment: 4 pages, 5figure

    Full-length sequence analysis of a distinct isolate of Bidens mottle virus infecting sunflower in Taiwan

    The full-length genome of a potyvirus, previously known as sunflower chlorotic spot virus isolate SF-1 (SCSV-SF-1) which causes novel symptoms on sunflowers (Helianthus annuus), was sequenced and analyzed. The genome of SCSV-SF-1 is 9,741 nucleotides long, encoding a polyprotein of 3,071 amino acids containing the consensus motifs of potyviruses. Sequence comparison revealed that the 3'-terminus of SCSV-SF-1 shared over 96% similarities with isolates of Bidens mottle virus (BiMoV). However, SCSV-SF-1 has a very narrow host range, excluding the diagnostic host species for BiMoV, Bidens pilosa and Zinnia elegans. Therefore, SCSV-SF-1 is a distinct isolate of BiMoV. This is the first report of the full-length nucleotide sequence of BiMoV infecting sunflower in Taiwan

In fact, data streams refer to some data points sequences that are found in order with the potential to be non-binding, which is generated from the process of generating information in a manner that is not stationary. As such the typical tasks of searching data have been linked to streams of data that are inclusive of clustering, classification, and repeated mining of pattern.     Identification of differentially expressed genes induced by Bamboo mosaic virus infection in Nicotiana benthamiana by cDNA-amplified fragment length polymorphism

    Background: The genes of plants can be up- or down-regulated during viral infection to influence the replication of viruses. Identification of these differentially expressed genes could shed light on the defense systems employed by plants and the mechanisms involved in the adaption of viruses to plant cells. Differential gene expression in Nicotiana benthamiana plants in response to infection with Bamboo mosaic virus (BaMV) was revealed using cDNA-amplified fragment length polymorphism (AFLP). Results: Following inoculation with BaMV, N. benthamiana displayed differential gene expression in response to the infection. Isolation, cloning, and sequencing analysis using cDNA-AFLP furnished 90 cDNA fragments with eight pairs of selective primers. Fifteen randomly selected genes were used for a combined virus-induced gene silencing (VIGS) knockdown experiment, using BaMV infection to investigate the roles played by these genes during viral infection, specifically addressing the means by which these genes influence the accumulation of BaMV protein. Nine of the 15 genes showed either a positive or a negative influence on the accumulation of BaMV protein. Six knockdown plants showed an increase in the accumulation of BaMV, suggesting that they played a role in the resistance to viral infection, while three plants showed a reduction in coat protein, indicating a positive influence on the accumulation of BaMV in plants. An interesting observation was that eight of the nine plants showing an increase in BaMV coat protein were associated with cell rescue, defense, death, aging, signal transduction, and energy production. Conclusions: This study reports an efficient and straightforward method for the identification of host genes involved in viral infection. We succeeded in establishing a cDNA-AFLP system to help track changes in gene expression patterns in N. benthamiana plants when infected with BaMV. The combination of both DNA-AFLP and VIGS methodologies made it possible to screen a large number of genes and identify those associated with infections of plant viruses.     Mean-field analysis of the stability of a K-Rb Fermi-Bose mixture

    We compare the experimental stability diagram of a Fermi-Bose mixture of K-40 and Rb-87 atoms with attractive interaction to the predictions of a mean-field theoretical model.     The SELF Trial: A self-efficacy based behavioral intervention trial for weight loss maintenance.

    The SELF Trial examined the effect of adding individual self‐efficacy (SE) enhancement sessions to standard behavioral weight loss treatment (SBT). Participants were randomly assigned to SBT or SBT plus SE sessions (SBT+SE). Outcome measures were weight loss maintenance, quality of life, intervention adherence, and self‐efficacy at 12 and 18 months. The sample (N = 130) was female (83.08%) with a mean (SD) body mass index of 33.15 (4.11) kg m2. There was a significant time effect for percent weight change (P = 0.002) yet no significant group or group‐by‐time effects. The weight loss for the SBT+SE group was 8.38% (7.48) at 12 months and 8.00% (7.87) at 18 months, with no significant difference between the two time points (P = 0.06). However, weight loss for the SBT group was 6.95% (6.67) at 12 months and 5.96% (7.35) at 18 months, which was significantly different between the two time points (P = 0.005), indicating that the SBT group had significant weight regain. Both groups achieved clinically significant weight loss. The group receiving an intervention targeting enhanced self‐efficacy had greater weight loss maintenance whereas the SBT group demonstrated significant weight regain possibly related to the greater attention provided to the SBT+SE group

    Finite temperature excitations of a trapped Bose-Fermi mixture

    We present a detailed study of the low-lying collective excitations of a spherically trapped Bose-Fermi mixture at finite temperature in the collisionless regime. The excitation frequencies of the condensate are calculated self-consistently using the static Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov theory within the Popov approximation. The frequency shifts and damping rates due to the coupled dynamics of the condensate, noncondensate, and degenerate Fermi gas are also taken into account by means of the random phase approximation and linear response theory. In our treatment, the dipole excitation remains close to the bare trapping frequency for all temperatures considered, and thus is consistent with the generalized Kohn theorem. We discuss in some detail the behavior of monopole and quadrupole excitations as a function of the Bose-Fermi coupling. At nonzero temperatures we find that, as the mixture moves towards spatial separation with increasing Bose-Fermi coupling, the damping rate of the monopole (quadrupole) excitation increases (decreases). This provides us a useful signature to identify the phase transition of spatial separation.Comment: 10 pages, 8 figures embedded; to be published in Phys. Rev.
