Method of cross-linking polyvinyl alcohol and other water soluble resins
A self supporting sheet structure comprising a water soluble, noncrosslinked polymer such as polyvinyl alcohol which is capable of being crosslinked by reaction with hydrogen atom radicals and hydroxyl molecule radicals is contacted with an aqueous solution having a pH of less than 8 and containing a dissolved salt in an amount sufficient to prevent substantial dissolution of the noncrosslinked polymer in the aqueous solution. The aqueous solution is then irradiated with ionizing radiation to form hydrogen atom radicals and hydroxyl molecule radicals and the irradiation is continued for a time sufficient to effect crosslinking of the water soluble polymer to produce a water insoluble polymer sheet structure. The method has particular application in the production of battery separators and electrode envelopes for alkaline batteries
New urea-absorbing polymers for artificial kidney machines
Etherified polymer is made from modified cellulose derivative which is reacted with periodate. It will absorb 2 grams of urea per 100 grams of polymer. Indications are that polymers could be used to help remove uremic wastes in artificial kidneys, or they could be administered orally as therapy for uremia
Aldehyde-containing urea-absorbing polysaccharides
A novel aldehyde containing polymer (ACP) is prepared by reaction of a polysaccharide with periodate to introduce aldehyde groups onto the C2 - C3 carbon atoms. By introduction of ether and ester groups onto the pendant primary hydroxyl solubility characteristics are modified. The ACP is utilized to absorb nitrogen bases such as urea in vitro or in vivo
Interpenetration as a Mechanism for Liquid-Liquid Phase Transitions
We study simple lattice systems to demonstrate the influence of
interpenetrating bond networks on phase behavior. We promote interpenetration
by using a Hamiltonian with a weakly repulsive interaction with nearest
neighbors and an attractive interaction with second-nearest neighbors. In this
way, bond networks will form between second-nearest neighbors, allowing for two
(locally) distinct networks to form. We obtain the phase behavior from analytic
solution in the mean-field approximation and exact solution on the Bethe
lattice. We compare these results with exact numerical results for the phase
behavior from grand canonical Monte Carlo simulations on square, cubic, and
tetrahedral lattices. All results show that these simple systems exhibit rich
phase diagrams with two fluid-fluid critical points and three thermodynamically
distinct phases. We also consider including third-nearest-neighbor
interactions, which give rise to a phase diagram with four critical points and
five thermodynamically distinct phases. Thus the interpenetration mechanism
provides a simple route to generate multiple liquid phases in single-component
systems, such as hypothesized in water and observed in several model and
experimental systems. Additionally, interpenetration of many such networks
appears plausible in a recently considered material made from nanoparticles

Completing Natural Inflation
If the inflaton is a pseudo-scalar axion, the axion shift symmetry can
protect the flatness of its potential from too large radiative corrections.
This possibility, known as natural inflation, requires an axion scale which is
greater than the (reduced) Planck scale. It is unclear whether such a high
value is compatible with an effective field theoretical description, and if the
global axionic symmetry survives quantum gravity effects. We propose a
mechanism which provides an effective large axion scale, although the original
one is sub-Planckian. The mechanism is based on the presence of two axions,
with a potential provided by two anomalous gauge groups. The effective large
axion scale is due to an almost exact symmetry between the couplings of the
axions to the anomalous groups. We also comment on a possible implementation in

Triggered Star Formation by Massive Stars
We present our diagnosis of the role that massive stars play in the formation
of low- and intermediate-mass stars in OB associations (the Lambda Ori region,
Ori OB1, and Lac OB1 associations). We find that the classical T Tauri stars
and Herbig Ae/Be stars tend to line up between luminous O stars and
bright-rimmed or comet-shaped clouds; the closer to a cloud the progressively
younger they are. Our positional and chronological study lends support to the
validity of the radiation-driven implosion mechanism, where the Lyman continuum
photons from a luminous O star create expanding ionization fronts to evaporate
and compress nearby clouds into bright-rimmed or comet-shaped clouds. Implosive
pressure then causes dense clumps to collapse, prompting the formation of
low-mass stars on the cloud surface (i.e., the bright rim) and
intermediate-mass stars somewhat deeper in the cloud. These stars are a
signpost of current star formation; no young stars are seen leading the
ionization fronts further into the cloud. Young stars in bright-rimmed or
comet-shaped clouds are likely to have been formed by triggering, which would
result in an age spread of several megayears between the member stars or star

CalFUSE v3: A Data-Reduction Pipeline for the Far Ultraviolet Spectroscopic Explorer
Since its launch in 1999, the Far Ultraviolet Spectroscopic Explorer (FUSE)
has made over 4600 observations of some 2500 individual targets. The data are
reduced by the Principal Investigator team at the Johns Hopkins University and
archived at the Multimission Archive at Space Telescope (MAST). The
data-reduction software package, called CalFUSE, has evolved considerably over
the lifetime of the mission. The entire FUSE data set has recently been
reprocessed with CalFUSE v3.2, the latest version of this software. This paper
describes CalFUSE v3.2, the instrument calibrations upon which it is based, and

Effect of interchain coupling on conducting polymer luminescence: excimers in derivatives of poly(phenylene vinylene)
Optical excitation of a chain in a polymer film may result in formation of an
excimer, a superposition of on-chain excitons and charge-transfer excitons on
the originally excited chain and a neighboring chain. The excimer emission is
red-shifted compared to that of an on-chain exciton by an amount depending on
the interchain coupling . Setting up the excimer wavefunction and
calculating the red shift, we determine average values, referred to a
monomer, of 0.52 eV and 0.16 eV for poly(2,5-hexyloxy -phenylene
cyanovinylene), CN-PPV, and poly[2-methoxy, 5-(2'-ethyl-hexyloxy)-1, 4
p-phenylene vinylene], MEH-PPV, respectively, and use them to determine the

Ancient Chinese methods are remarkably effective for the preparation of artemisinin-rich extracts of Qing Hao with potent antimalarial activity.
yesAncient Chinese herbal texts as far back as the 4th Century Zhou hou bei ji fang
describe methods for the use of Qing Hao (Artemisia annua) for the treatment of
intermittent fevers. Today, the A. annua constituent artemisinin is an important
antimalarial drug and the herb itself is being grown and used locally for malaria treatment
although this practice is controversial. Here we show that the ancient Chinese methods that
involved either soaking, (followed by wringing) or pounding, (followed by squeezing) the
fresh herb are more effective in producing artemisinin-rich extracts than the usual current
method of preparing herbal teas from the dried herb. The concentrations of artemisinin in
the extracts was up to 20-fold higher than that in a herbal tea prepared from the dried herb,
but the amount of total artemisinin extracted by the Chinese methods was much less than
that removed in the herbal tea. While both extracts exhibited potent in vitro activities
against Plasmodium falciparum, only the pounded juice contained sufficient artemisinin to
suppress parasitaemia in P. berghei infected mice. The implications of these results are
