Structural study in Highly Compressed BiFeO3 Epitaxial Thin Films on YAlO3
We report a study on the thermodynamic stability and structure analysis of
the epitaxial BiFeO3 (BFO) thin films grown on YAlO3 (YAO) substrate. First we
observe a phase transition of MC-MA-T occurs in thin sample (<60 nm) with an
utter tetragonal-like phase (denoted as MII here) with a large c/a ratio
(~1.23). Specifically, MII phase transition process refers to the structural
evolution from a monoclinic MC structure at room temperature to a monoclinic MA
at higher temperature (150oC) and eventually to a presence of nearly tetragonal
structure above 275oC. This phase transition is further confirmed by the
piezoforce microscopy measurement, which shows the rotation of polarization
axis during the phase transition. A systematic study on structural evolution
with thickness to elucidate the impact of strain state is performed. We note
that the YAO substrate can serve as a felicitous base for growing T-like BFO
because this phase stably exists in very thick film. Thick BFO films grown on
YAO substrate exhibit a typical "morphotropic-phase-boundary"-like feature with
coexisting multiple phases (MII, MI, and R) and a periodic stripe-like
topography. A discrepancy of arrayed stripe morphology in different direction
on YAO substrate due to the anisotropic strain suggests a possibility to tune
the MPB-like region. Our study provides more insights to understand the strain
mediated phase co-existence in multiferroic BFO system.Comment: 18 pages, 6 figures, submitted to Journal of Applied Physic
Pinning effect on the phase separation dynamics of thin polymer-dispersed liquid crystals
The surface pining effects on phase separation dynamics of polymer-dispersed liquid crystals (PDLCs) with thin cell gaps are demonstrated. Comparing various boundary conditions, the inner surfaces of the substrates with or without polyimide layers [but no rubbing] cannot provide enough anchoring force, so in either case the liquid crystal (LC) droplets flow and coalesce to form larger and less uniform droplets. However, if the inner surfaces of the substrates are coated with rubbed polyimide layers with anchoring energy \u3e 1 x 10(-4) J/m(2), almost all the nucleated LC droplets grow at a fixed position during phase separation. The appearance of the coalescence is not obvious and the formed LC droplets are relatively uniform. The surface anchoring has a significant effect on the morphology of PDLCs
A novel glue attachment approach for precise anchoring of hydrophilic EGCG to enhance the separation performance and antifouling properties of PVDF membranes
A novel glue attachment approach was proposed to form a durable hydration layer on a hydrophobic PVDF hollow fiber membrane (PVDF HFM) surface to improve its hydrophilicity and antifouling ability during wastewater filtration. The functional glue was synthesized from reclaimed styrene butadiene rubber (SBR) and a hydroxyl group was created with an epoxidation reaction (ESBR). The hydrophilic epigallocatechin-s-gallate (EGCG) was then precisely anchored via hydrogen bonding with multiple phenolic hydroxyl groups in the ESBR without penetrating into the inner matrix of the PVDF to prevent flux decline. The hydrophilicity of the PVDF membrane increased drastically and the water contact angle decreased from 62.7° to 45.1° with only a 25% decline in the pure water flux. Furthermore, due to precise anchoring of the EGCG, the modified EGCG-ESBR/PVDF membrane showed a higher pure water flux (110.6 L mâ2hâ1) and much higher BSA and oil (kerosene) rejection rates (approximately 94.5% and 99.5%, respectively) compared to membranes directly coated with EGCG (EGCG-PVDF). Moreover, the modified membrane also showed higher water flux recovery after multiple filtration cycles. This promising and efficient hydrophilic modification suggests great potential for application of the eco-friendly material in wastewater treatment.</p
Dual-frequency liquid crystal gels with submillisecond response time
Two types of gels using dual-frequency liquid crystal are demonstrated. The one using a homogeneous cell shows anisotropic scattering behavior while the other prepared using a cell without polyimide alignment layers exhibits isotropic scattering properties. Both liquid crystal gels are highly transparent in the voltage-off state. Light scattering occurs when a high frequency voltage is applied. The isotropic gel exhibits a high contrast ratio and submillisecond response time. Potential applications of these gels for switchable polarizer, telecom optical switch, and reflective displays are emphasized
A close association of body cell mass loss with disease activity and disability in Chinese patients with rheumatoid arthritis
OBJECTIVES: To investigate the association of body cell mass loss with disease activity and disability in rheumatoid arthritis patients. INTRODUCTION: Rheumatoid cachexia, defined as the loss of body cell mass, is important but under-recognized and contributes to morbidity and mortality in patients with rheumatoid arthritis. METHODS: One hundred forty-nine rheumatoid arthritis patients and 53 healthy, non-rheumatoid arthritis control subjects underwent anthropometric measurements of body mass index and waist and hip circumferences. Bioelectrical impedance analysis was used to determine the subjects' body compositions, including fat mass, skeletal lean mass, and body cell mass. The disease activity of rheumatoid arthritis was assessed using C-reactive protein serum, the erythrocyte sedimentation rate and the 28-joint disease activity score, while disability was evaluated using a health assessment questionnaire. RESULTS: Rheumatoid arthritis patients had lower waist-to-hip ratio (0.86 ± 0.07 vs. 0.95 ± 0.06; p<0.001) and lower skeletal lean mass indexes (14.44 ±1.52 vs. 15.18 ± 1.35; p = 0.002) than those in the healthy control group. Compared with rheumatoid arthritis patients with higher body cell masses, those with body cell masses lower than median had higher erythrocyte sedimentation rates (40.10 ± 27.33 vs. 25.09 ± 14.85; p<0.001), higher disease activity scores (5.36 ± 3.79 vs. 4.23 ± 1.21; p = 0.022) and greater disability as measured by health assessment questionnaire scores (1.26 ± 0.79 vs. 0.87 ± 0.79; p = 0.004). CONCLUSIONS: The loss of body cell mass is associated with higher disease activity and greater disability in rheumatoid arthritis patients. Body composition determined by bioelectrical impedance analysis can provide valuable information for a rheumatologist to more rapidly recognize rheumatoid cachexia in rheumatoid arthritis patients
The History, Mechanism, and Clinical Application of Auricular Therapy in Traditional Chinese Medicine
Auricular therapy includes acupuncture, electroacupuncture, acupressure, lasering, cauterization, moxibustion, and bloodletting in the auricle. For 2500 years, people have employed auricular therapy for treating diseases, but the methods have been limited to bloodletting and cauterization. Only after 1957, the international scientific community became aware that the map of the ear resembles an inverted fetus, its introduction has led to auricular acupuncture (AA) becoming a more systemic approach, and, following the identification and standardization of more precise points, AA has been employed in clinical applications. The mechanisms of AA are considered to have a close relationship with the autonomic nervous system, the neuroendocrine system, neuroimmunological factors, neuroinflammation, and neural reflex, as well as antioxidation. Auricular therapy has been applied, for example, for pain relief, for the treatment of epilepsy, anxiety, and obesity, and for improving sleep quality. However, the mechanisms and evidence for auricular therapy warrant further study
Antioxidant and tyrosinase inhibitor from Leucaena leucocephala
The experimental design is divided into two parts: chemical analysis and bioactive assay. One antioxidant lupeol (4) and one inhibition of tyrosinase pheophorbide a methyl ester (7) were identified in Leucaena leucocephala. Both showed effective 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) radical scavenging activity compared with vitamin C, and mushroom tyrosinase compared with kojic acid. These results suggest that these constituents of L. leucocephala act as natural antioxidants and play a potential role in prevention of pigmentation. Keywords: Leucaenana leucocephala, lupeol, pheophorbide a methyl ester, antioxidant, mushroom tyrosinas
Emergence in Taiwan of novel imipenem-resistant Acinetobacter baumannii ST455 causing bloodstream infection in critical patients
BackgroundAcinetobacter baumannii is one of the most important noscomial pathogens worldwide. The study aimed to use multilocus sequence typing (MLST) for epidemiological surveillance of A. baumannii isolates in Taiwan and analyze the clinical presentations and patients' outcomes.MethodsMLST according to both Bartual's PubMLST and Pasteur's MLST schemes was applied to characterize bloodstream imipenem-resistant A. baumannii (IRAB) infection in intensive care units in a medical center. A total of 39 clinical IRAB bloodstream isolates in 2010 were enrolled. We also collected 13 imipenem-susceptible A. baumannii bloodstream isolates and 30 clinical sputum isolates (24 IRAB and 6 imipenem-susceptible A. baumannii) for comparison. Clinical presentations and outcome of the patients were analyzed.ResultsWe found that infection by ST455B/ST2P and inappropriate initial therapy were statistically significant risk factors for mortality. More than one third of the IRAB isolates belonged to ST455B/ST2P. Most ST455B/ST2P (80%) carried ISAba1âblaOXA-23, including 10 (66.7%) with Tn2006 (ISAba1âblaOXA-23âISAba1) in an AbaR4-type resistance island. ST455B/ST2P appears to evolve from ST208B/ST2P of clonal complex (CC) 92B/CC2P. In this hospital-based study, A. baumannii ST455 accounted for 38.5% of IRAB bacteremia, with a high mortality of 86.7%. Approximately 85% of ST455B/ST2P bacteremia had a primary source of ventilation-associated pneumonia.ConclusionWe report the emergence in Taiwan of IRAB ST455B/ST2P, which is the current predominant clone of IRAB in our hospital and has been causing bacteremia with high mortality in critical patients
