Convergence analysis of a multigrid algorithm for the acoustic single layer equation
We present and analyze a multigrid algorithm for the acoustic single layer
equation in two dimensions. The boundary element formulation of the equation is
based on piecewise constant test functions and we make use of a weak inner
product in the multigrid scheme as proposed in \cite{BLP94}. A full error
analysis of the algorithm is presented. We also conduct a numerical study of
the effect of the weak inner product on the oscillatory behavior of the
eigenfunctions for the Laplace single layer operator
Generation of helical gears with new surfaces, topology by application of CNC machines
Analysis of helical involute gears by tooth contact analysis shows that such gears are very sensitive to angular misalignment that leads to edge contact and the potential for high vibration. A new topology of tooth surfaces of helical gears that enables a favorable bearing contact and a reduced level of vibration is described. Methods for grinding of the helical gears with the new topology are proposed. A TCA (tooth contact analysis) program for simulation of meshing and contact of helical gears with the new topology has been developed. Numerical examples that illustrate the proposed ideas are discussed
The Antimicrobial Effect of Silver Ion Impregnation into Endodontic Sealer against Streptococcus mutans.
Pulpal and periradicular diseases are primarily caused by bacterial invasion of the root canal system as a result of caries progression. The presence of residual bacteria at the time of root canal completion (obturation) is associated with significantly higher rate of treatment failure. Re-infection of obturated root canals can be potentially prevented by enhancing the antibacterial activities of root canal obturation materials. We evaluated, in an in vitro model, the antimicrobial efficacy of silver ions added to a common endodontic sealer. For that purpose we performed growth inhibition studies and bacterial viability tests. We measured the zone of inhibition, optical density and performed confocal laser scanning microscopy. Our results show that the silver ions enhance the antimicrobial activity of the root canal sealer against Streptococcus mutans. This study approach may hold promise for studying other biologically based therapies and therefore increasing the success rate of routine orthograde root canal treatment
Occupation Dynamics of Trap States in an a-Si:H Thin-Film Transistor
We calculate the dynamical behavior of a-Si:H thin-film transistors with an emphasis on the occupation dynamics of trap states. The appropriate rate equation for the occupation function of trap states is included. We show the relations of filling the trap states with the switch-on time and of emptying the trap charges with the switch-off time. The occupation functions in both cases are non-Fermi distribution. The quasi-equilibrium approximation underestimates those two time constants. Thus, transit time theory cannot describe the speeds of transistors made from disordered materials
Near-IR studies of recurrent nova V745 Scorpii during its 2014 outburst
The recurrent nova (RN) V745 Scorpii underwent its third known outburst on
2014 February 6. Infrared monitoring of the eruption on an almost daily basis,
starting from 1.3d after discovery, shows the emergence of a powerful blast
wave generated by the high velocity nova ejecta exceeding 4000 kms
plowing into its surrounding environment. The temperature of the shocked gas is
raised to a high value exceeding 10K immediately after outburst
commencement. The energetics of the outburst clearly surpass those of similar
symbiotic systems like RS Oph and V407 Cyg which have giant secondaries. The
shock does not show a free-expansion stage but rather shows a decelerative
Sedov-Taylor phase from the beginning. Such strong shockfronts are known to be
sites for ray generation. V745 Sco is the latest nova, apart from five
other known novae, to show ray emission. It may be an important
testbed to resolve the crucial question whether all novae are generically
ray emitters by virtue of having a circumbinary reservoir of material
that is shocked by the ejecta rather than ray generation being
restricted to only symbiotic systems with a shocked red giant (RG) wind. The
lack of a free-expansion stage favors V745 Sco to have a density enhancement
around the white dwarf (WD), above that contributed by a RG wind. Our analysis
also suggests that the WD in V745 Sco is very massive and a potential
progenitor for a future SN Ia explosion.Comment: To appear in ApJ (Letters
Unraveling the Infrared Transient VVV-WIT-06: The Case for the Origin as a Classical Nova

Facility: Magellan: Baade(FIRE).The enigmatic near-infrared transient VVV-WIT-06 underwent a large-amplitude eruption of unclear origin in 2013 July. Based on its light curve properties and late-time post-outburst spectra, various possibilities have been proposed in the literature for the origin of the object, namely a Type I supernova, a classical nova (CN), or a violent stellar merger event. We show that, of these possibilities, an origin in a CN outburst convincingly explains the observed properties of VVV-WIT-06. We estimate that the absolute K-band magnitude of the nova at maximum was M k = -8.2 ±0.5, its distance d = 13.35 ±2.18 kpc, and the extinction A v = 15.0 ±0.55 mag. © 2018.
