Modelling of selection and mating decisions in tree breeding programs
Hardwood trees from the temperate forests of southern Australia are an important source of timber for high quality paper. Two species in particular, Eucalyptus globulus and Eucalyptus nitens are well suited to this purpose and are now widely grown in commercial plantations. These plantations have been established by professional tree breeders using seedlings derived originally from broadly based collection of seed in natural forests. To increase productivity it is desirable to select trees that grow quickly and give high yields of top quality timber. Nevertheless it is important to maintain genetic diversity in the breeding population and thereby retain a robust capacity to adapt to changing environmental factors. In this article we formulate a number of related mathematical models for the selection and mating processes and discuss the consequences of these models. We recommend a relatively simple scheme which can be implemented on an IBM compatible PC using standard algorithms
Neurological disorders in HIV in Africa: a review
Background: Neurological disorders in HIV infection are a common cause of morbidity and mortality. The aim of this paper is to provide a narrative overview of up to date information concerning neurological disorders affecting HIV infected persons in Africa.Methods: Seminal research concerning neurological disorders among HIV-infected adults in sub-Saharan Africa from prior to 2000 was combined with an in-depth search of PubMed to identify literature published from 2000 to 2017. The following Mesh terms were used. "Nervous System Diseasesâ "HIV Infections" and "Africa South of the Sahara" and "Seizures" or "Spinal Cord Diseases" or âPeripheral Nervous System Diseases" or "AIDS Dementia Complex" or âOpportunistic Infections" or "Immune constitution Inflammatory Syndromeâ or "Stroke". Only those articles written in English were used. A total of 352 articles were identified, selected and reviewed and 180 were included in the study. These included case series, observational studies, interventional studies, guidelines and reviews with metanalyses. The author also included 15 publications on the subject covering theearlier phase of the HIV epidemic in Africa from 1987 to 1999 making a total of 195 references in the study. This was combined with extensive personal experience diagnosing and treating these neurological disorders.Results: Neurological disorders were common, typically occurring in WHO stages III/IV. These were in three main categories: those arising from opportunistic processes mostly infections, direct HIV infection and autoimmunity. The most common were those arising from direct HIV infection occurring in >50%. These included HIV-associated neurocognitive dysfunction (HAND), neuropathy and myelopathy. Opportunistic infections occurred in >20% and frequently had a 6-9-month mortality rate of 60-70%. The main causes were cryptococcus, tuberculosis, toxoplasmosis and acute bacterial meningitis. Concurrentsystemic tuberculosis occurred in almost 50%.Conclusion: Neurological disorders are common in HIV in Africa and the main CNS opportunistic infections result in high mortality rates. Strategies aimed at reducing their high burden, morbidity and mortality include early HIV diagnosis and anti-retroviral therapy (ART), screening and chemoprophylaxis of main opportunistic infections, improved clinical diagnosis and management and programme strengthening.Keywords: Neurological disorders, HIV, Africa, opportunistic infections, direct HIV infection and inflammatory disorders
Measuring the growth rate of structure with Type IA Supernovae from LSST
We investigate measuring the peculiar motions of galaxies up to using
Type Ia supernovae (SNe Ia) from LSST, and predict the subsequent constraints
on the growth rate of structure. We consider two cases. Our first is based on
measurements of the volumetric SNe Ia rate and assumes we can obtain
spectroscopic redshifts and light curves for varying fractions of objects that
are detected pre-peak luminosity by LSST (some of which may be obtained by LSST
itself and others which would require additional follow-up). We find that these
measurements could produce growth rate constraints at that
significantly outperform those using Redshift Space Distortions (RSD) with DESI
or 4MOST, even though there are fewer objects. For our second
case, we use semi-analytic simulations and a prescription for the SNe Ia rate
as a function of stellar mass and star formation rate to predict the number of
LSST SNe IA whose host redshifts may already have been obtained with the
Taipan+WALLABY surveys, or with a future multi-object spectroscopic survey. We
find and SN Ia with host redshifts for these cases
respectively. Whilst this is only a fraction of the total LSST-detected SNe Ia,
they could be used to significantly augment and improve the growth rate
constraints compared to only RSD. Ultimately, we find that combining LSST SNe
Ia with large numbers of galaxy redshifts will provide the most powerful probe

A nod in the wrong direction : Does nonverbal feedback affect eyewitness confidence in interviews?
Eyewitnesses can be influenced by an interviewer's behaviour and report information with inflated confidence as a result. Previous research has shown that positive feedback administered verbally can affect the confidence attributed to testimony, but the effect of non-verbal influence in interviews has been given little attention. This study investigated whether positive or negative non-verbal feedback could affect the confidence witnesses attribute to their responses. Participants witnessed staged CCTV footage of a crime scene and answered 20 questions in a structured interview, during which they were given either positive feedback (a head nod), negative feedback (a head shake) or no feedback. Those presented with positive non-verbal feedback reported inflated confidence compared with those presented with negative non-verbal feedback regardless of accuracy, and this effect was most apparent when participants reported awareness of the feedback. Best causal mathematical models for a nonlinear system

The operator P/sub p/ is determined from a special orthogonalization procedure and minimization of the mean squared difference between outputs of S and P/sub p/. As a result, these models have smallest possible associated errors in the class of such operators P/sub p/. The causality condition is implemented through the use of specific matrices called lower trapezoidal. The associated computational work is reduced by the use of the orthogonalization procedure. We provide a strict justification of the proposed approach including theorems on an explicit representatoin of the models' parameters, and theorems on the associated error representation. A philosophy for the modelling of realistic nonlinear systems

Each signal is specified by a set of real number parameters, but such sets may be uncountably infinite. For numerical simulation of the system each signal must be represented by a finite parameter set and the mapping must be defined by a finite arithmetical process. Nevertheless the numerical simulation should be a good approximation to the mathematical model. Anodising AA5083 aluminium alloy using ionic liquids
Aluminium, as the current collector in lithium batteries, has shown reduced corrosion susceptibility in room temperature molten salts (1, 2). Moreover, previous studies have established that corrosion mitigation is achieved on magnesium alloys using ionic liquids pretreatments (3, 4). This paper investigated the anodisation of AA5083 aluminium alloy in Trihexyl(tetradecyl)phosphonium bis(trifluoromethylsulfony) ([P6,6,6,14][NTf2]) ionic liquid by applying a constant current followed by holding at the maximum potential for a period of time. Potentiodynamic polarisation results show that the treated surfaces were more corrosion resistant in 0.1 M sodium chloride solution compared with the control specimen. The anodising treatment was effective both in shifting the free corrosion potential to more noble values and in suppressing the corrosion current. Optical microscope and optical profilometry images indicated that an anodising film was deposited onto the alloy surface, which is thought to have inhibited corrosion in chloride environment. Further characterisation of the anodising film will be carried out in future work
