    Renewable Energy Resources Impact on Clean Electrical Power by developing the North-West England Hydro Resource Model.

    This paper describes the development of a sequential decision support system to promote hydroelectric power in North-West England. The system, composed of integrated models, addresses barriers to the installation of hydroelectric power schemes. Information is linked through an economic assessment which identifies different turbine options, assesses their suitability for location and demand; and combines the different types of information in a way that supports decision making. The system is structured into five components: the hydrological resource is modelled using Low Flows 2000, the turbine options are identified from hydrological, environmental and demand requirements; and the consequences of different solutions will be fed into other components so that the environmental impacts and public acceptability can be assessed and valued. A preliminary case study is presented on an old gunpowder works to illustrate how the resource model may be employed.     The Impact of Investments in Maize Research and Dissemination in Zambia Part I: Main Report

    Michigan State University (MSU) is currently assessing the impact of agricultural research on various commodities in seven African countries: Cameroon (maize, cowpea, sorghum), Kenya (maize, wheat), Malawi (maize), Mali (maize), Niger (sorghum, cowpea, millet), Uganda (oilseeds), and Zambia (maize). These countries were selected because they represent a variety of agro-ecological regions, and because their research systems have received significant levels of funding from USAID. The country studies undertaken by MSU are part of a series of research works recently commissioned to help USAID and the U.S. Congress analyze the effectiveness of aid given to strengthen national agricultural research systems in Africa. In Zambia, MSU collaborated with the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Fisheries (MAFF) and the University of Zambia's Rural Development Studies Bureau (RDSB) to assess the impact of investments in maize research and dissemination made during the late 1970s and early 1980s. This research resulted in the release of ten new hybrids and open-pollinated varieties between 1984-88.     Pressure Lag in Tubing Used in Flight Research

    Tests described in this report were undertaken to obtain a quantitative measure of the pressure lag in typical pressure-tubing systems used by the Ames Aeronautical Laboratory in flight research investigations. Lag measurements were made with both single-direction and oscillating pressure changes. Single-direction pressure changes were investigated to determine if the lag in orifice-pressure lines and in the research airspeed and altitude measuring systems of pursuit-type airplane undergoing flight tests was sufficient to cause an appreciable error in the record of a sudden pressure change. Oscillating pressure changes were investigated with particular reference to the accuracy of pressure peaks in pressure-distribution measurements during the time of buffeting conditions as found in stalls.     Lung function, inflammation, and endothelin-1 in congenital heart disease-associated pulmonary arterial hypertension

    Background-—Breathlessness is the most common symptom in people with pulmonary arterial hypertension and congenital heart disease (CHD-APAH), previously thought to be caused by worsening PAH, but perhaps also by inflammation and abnormalities of lung function. We studied lung function and airway inflammation in patients with CHD-APAH and compared the results with controls. Methods and Results-—Sixty people were recruited into the study: 20 CHD-APAH, 20 CHD controls, and 20 healthy controls. Spirometry, gas transfer, whole body plethysmography and lung clearance index, 6-minute walk distance, and medical research council dyspnea scoring were performed. Inflammatory markers and endothelin-1 levels were determined in blood and induced sputum. The CHD-APAH group had abnormal lung function with lung restriction, airway obstruction, and ventilation heterogeneity. Inverse correlations were shown for CHD-APAH between medical research council dyspnea score and percent predicted peak expiratory flow (r= 0.5383, P=0.0174), percent predicted forced expiratory flow rate at 50% of forced vital capacity (r= 0.5316, P=0.0192), as well as for percent predicted forced expiratory volume in 1 s (r= 0.6662, P=0.0018) and percent predicted forced vital capacity (r= 0.5536, P=0.0186). The CHD-APAH patients were more breathless with lower 6-minute walk distance (360 m versus 558 m versus 622 m, P=0.00001). Endothelin-1, interleukin (IL)-b, IL-6, IL-8, tumor necrosis factor a, and vascular endothelial growth factor were significantly higher in CHD-APAH than controls. Serum endothelin-1 for CHD-APAH correlated with airflow obstruction with significant negative correlations with percent predicted forced expiratory flow rate at 75% of forced vital capacity (r= 0.5858, P=0.0135). Conclusions-—Raised biomarkers for inflammation were found in CHD-APAH. Significant abnormalities in airway physiology may contribute to the dyspnea but are not driven by inflammation as assessed by circulating and sputum cytokines.     Multifidelity Deep Operator Networks

    Operator learning for complex nonlinear operators is increasingly common in modeling physical systems. However, training machine learning methods to learn such operators requires a large amount of expensive, high-fidelity data. In this work, we present a composite Deep Operator Network (DeepONet) for learning using two datasets with different levels of fidelity, to accurately learn complex operators when sufficient high-fidelity data is not available. Additionally, we demonstrate that the presence of low-fidelity data can improve the predictions of physics-informed learning with DeepONets

    The Magnitude of Lift Forces Acting on Drops and Bubbles in Liquids Flowing Inside Microchannels

    Hydrodynamic lift forces offer a convenient way to manipulate particles in microfluidic applications, but there is little quantitative information on how non-inertial lift mechanisms act and compete with each other in the confined space of microfluidic channels. This paper reports measurements of lift forces on nearly spherical drops and bubbles, with diameters from one quarter to one half of the width of the channel, flowing in microfluidic channels, under flow conditions characterized by particle capillary numbers CaP = 0.0003–0.3 and particle Reynolds numbers ReP = 0.0001–0.1. For CaP < 0.01 and ReP < 0.01 the measured lift forces were much larger than predictions of deformation-induced and inertial lift forces found in the literature, probably due to physicochemical hydrodynamic effects at the interface of drops and bubbles, such as the presence of surfactants. The measured forces could be fit with good accuracy using an empirical formula given herein. The empirical formula describes the power-law dependence of the lift force on hydrodynamic parameters (velocity and viscosity of the carrier phase; sizes of channel and drop or bubble), and includes a numerical lift coefficient that depends on the fluids used. The empirical formula using an average lift coefficient of [similar]500 predicted, within one order of magnitude, all lift force measurements in channels with cross-sectional dimensions below 1 mm.Chemistry and Chemical Biolog
