The first vernacular grammars in Europe : the Scandinavian area

Icelandic was the first Scandinavian vernacular to be analysed in a relatively exhaustive way (cf. The first grammatical Treatise, 12th century). Jonsson's grammar (1651) is nevertheless the first modern work on the topic. The first grammatical studies of Swedish only appeared in the 17th century : Tiderius (1626), Vexionius (1650) and Aurivillius (1684). The study of Danish began in the same period, with Pontoppidan's work (1668) in particular. It was not before Norway's independence in the 19th century that Norvegian became an object of study, with Aasen's grammar (1848), especially. As to the language of the Faroe Islands, we find no important description before a very recent period.L'islandais est le premier vernaculaire Scandinave à avoir été analysé de façon relativement complète (cf.
