Effect of Wood Characteristics on Adhesive Bond Quality of Yellow-Poplar for Use in Cross-Laminated Timbers

Cross-laminated timber (CLT) panels are gaining more interest in North America, though CLTs are currently only approved for manufacture under ANSI/APA PRG-320 using select softwood species. Much of the low-grade Appalachian hardwood lumber produced has potential for being used to produce CLT panels given that necessary research data is developed to show that hardwood CLTs meet the requirements of the standard. One particular issue with using hardwood lumber in CLT panels is that it is often more difficult to achieve a strong, durable adhesive bond.;Among the Appalachian hardwood species, yellow-poplar (Liriodendron tulipifera) is particularly abundant in West Virginia. The objective of this research was to identify which characteristics of yellow-poplar lumber have an effect on adhesive bond quality. Twelve treatments were applied to yellow-poplar lumber to examine the interactions and main effects of adherend thickness, lamination orientation, and orthotropic orientation (bonding surface plane). Bond strength and durability were determined using shear-block and cyclic delamination tests. Fluorescence microscopy was used to determine the level of adhesive penetration achieved on select samples that performed notably well or poorly.;The results of the research found that lamination orientation significantly affected bond strength in yellow-poplar, with parallel laminated samples yielding higher average shear strength and wood failure than perpendicular laminated samples. Furthermore, adherend thickness also appears to influence bond strength, as the samples with thinner adherends had significantly higher levels of wood failure in shear block specimens. None of the tested effects had a clear impact on bond durability. Lastly, in comparing the results of the yellow-poplar samples to a reference species (hard pine) that is accepted for CLT manufacture, no differences were noticed in percentage of wood failure or delamination (bond durability). Yellow-poplar had a significantly higher mean shear strength than the reference samples, but this may tell more about the wood itself than the adhesive bond strength. Based on the findings of this research, yellow-poplar could facilitate adhesive bonds of the necessary strength and durability to be used in CLT manufacture

Exercise Prescription for Chronic Disease Management

    Get PDF
The beneficial role of exercise in chronic disease management is well recognized, but the challenge of effective exercise prescription within primary care persists. Initiatives requesting clinicians to prescribe specific exercises to their patients has left two underlying questions: 1) Who is the most appropriate clinician to prescribe exercise to meet the unique needs of individuals living with more than one disease; 2) How does this clinician ensure appropriate and safe exercise prescriptions are provided? Three studies were completed to begin addressing the aforementioned questions. A nationally distributed survey compared exercise curricula between physiotherapy, nursing, and medical programs, while a systematic literature review showed overlapping physiological and subjective markers that clinicians may use to define safe exercises for individuals living with multiple chronic diseases. Finally a novel approach and a preliminary tool are presented to help guide how exercise prescription could be implemented in primary care. Findings suggest that PTs should lead the exercise prescription movement in primary care with nurses and physicians as exercise advisors or facilitators. Evidence from this thesis supports improving access to PT in primary care. Also, exercise prescription in individuals with multiple chronic diseases from a body-systems perspective is proposed, rather than solely relying on the dominantly available single-disease exercise guidelines. Finally, a newly developed exercise prescription approach is presented, which takes into account the advisors role in exercise prescription, while a preliminary tool is proposed that considers physiological and personal profiles of individuals who have more than one chronic disease, to guide clinicians in developing tailored exercise prescriptions in the primary care context

V této diplomové práci je prvně provedena rešerše v oblasti popisu a analýzy časově proměnných dat. Práce následně uvádí problematiku technické analýzy burzovních grafů, cenových vzorů, indikátorů technické analýzy a metody Pure price action. This diploma work initially conduct research in the area of descriptions and analysis of time series. The thesis then proceed to introduce the problems of technical analysis of price charts as well as indicators, price patterns and method of Pure Price Action. The method Pure Price Action is demonstrated in this work in two practical examples of its application to real businesses with a view to discovering and analyzing price patterns, as well as analysis and prediction of future price and financial evolution. This analysis is an introduction to the processes of successful business, following on from this we discuss the theme of Pattern Recognition and the Instance Based Learning method. The practical aspect of this work is carried out with the aid of a MATLAB applied algorithm for the analysis of the price pattern Correction for sale and purchase in dynamic time segments, specifically in trading price graphs, like those used for commodities or stock trading. For the analysis of time series we use the Pure Price Action method. The Instance Based Learning method is used by the algorithm to recognize price patterns. The created algorithm is verified on real data of a 5 minute time series of the US Dow Jones price charts for the years 2006, 2007, 2008. The achieved accuracy is evaluated with the aid of Equity Curves.
