    Authentic leadership in sports teams

    Authentic leadership includes a positive moral perspective characterized by high ethical standards that guide decision making and behavior. The measurement of authentic leadership is aimed at a leader’s ability to be genuine. This study identified and analyzed authentic leaders on sports teams. Group cohesion was also assessed. The purpose was to determine whether authentic leadership would lead to performance when mediated by team cohesion and trust. Survey analyses were used to assess several teams. Results indicated that sports teams may benefit from training in authentic leadership. Authentic leadership predicts higher levels of trust, team cohesion, and group performance

    Applying complexity theory to the strategic development of an organisation

    How useful is complexity theory for describing the strategic development of an organisation? I begin by using Whittington’s framework to give an overview of mainstream strategy literature. I highlight some of the shortcomings in current approaches to strategy and suggest that a new approach is needed. Complexity theory is offered as a new approach. I examine the complexity theory literature. I discuss rules based and connectionist approaches to complexity theory and the use of complexity theory concepts as metaphors. The complexity theory concepts of sensitivity to initial conditions, disequilibrium, positive and negative feedback and emergence of order are identified. Shortcomings in using the theory to describe a social system are then given. I examine the research paradigms open to researchers and conclude that to apply complexity theory to a social system, research within a phenomenological paradigm is required. I present an three and a half year ethnographic study of AYTAG, a public sector regulatory organisation. I use narrative to describe its development in terms of complexity theory concepts. The organisation set out to become flexible and flat structured, with multiskilled professionals and a strong centre to drive it forward. What emerged was an hierarchical organisation with powerful operational departments, a weak centre and a traditionally skilled workforce. AYTAG retained its primary role of regulator but failed to promote its influencing role. I found that order emerged at the boundary between the organisation’s legitimate and shadow systems. The underlying dynamic which led to the order that emerged was the need to reduce anxiety. I examine the usefulness of each complexity theory concept to our understanding of the development of AYTAG. I describe the difficulties involved in determining the exact nature of initial conditions in social systems and the need to consider disequilibrium as a social state rather than a particular action or event. In particular I highlight the use of the concept of feedback as an interesting avenue for studying organisations. I examine the nature of feedback processes at the level of organisation and at individual system level. I describe the interplay between them and its effect on the order emerging in AYTAG. I draw attention to some of the difficulties I found in applying complexity theory concepts to a social system, such establishing precise definitions of the different concepts

    War exacerbates the usual tensions between individual freedoms and national security. In such times, the United States frequently sacrifices its tradition of individual autonomy and deliberative debate for the security and unanimity of an autocratic, military-style government. Individual rights are often the first casualties of hastily enacted legal measures that expand executive power without regard to constitutional checks and balances. While the expansions have generated criticism and calls for greater government accountability, it is often difficult to determine who within the executive should be held accountable. As the President’s chief law enforcement officer, the Attorney General of the United States interprets and implements these legal measures. Yet, in the oath of office, the Attorney General promises, “to support and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign and domestic.” Consequently, the Attorney General’s actions have often been linked to the expansion of executive power at the expense of civil liberties

    Spectroscopic and Microscopic Characterisation of Carbon Nanostructures

    Currently, carbon nanotubes (CNTs) are produced using a variety of techniques which yield CNT materials with wide ranging levels of chemical purity and structural perfection. Consequently, characterising CNT materials accurately is of utmost importance if potential applications of CNTs are to be realised on a large scale. In this work four commercially available CNT samples are characterised using a number of techniques, namely: scanning electron microscopy (SEM); high resolution transmission microscopy (HRTEM); energy dispersive x-ray analysis (EDX); Auger electron spectroscopy (AES); low-loss electron energy loss spectroscopy (low-loss EELS); ultra-violet photoemission spectroscopy (UPS); x-ray photoemission spectroscopy (XPS) and Raman spectroscopy. The information provided by these techniques is assessed in their ability to characterise different CNT materials. The definition of CNT ‘quality’ is also discussed and the ability of these techniques to determine such a property is considered. A significant part of ascertaining the ‘quality’ of a CNT sample lies in understanding the nature and number of defects in the walls of these materials. In this work, defects are introduced into the lattice of different CNT species using 1.5 keV Ar+ ions and the effects are monitored using XPS. In particular, the resultant reactivity of irradiated CNTs to ambient atmospheric oxygen is investigated, which is found to be markedly enhanced for CNTs with one wall when compared to those with multiple walls. It is also demonstrated that the type of incident ion and irradiation dose can be used to selectively control the level and nature of the surface composition of oxygen functionalised SWCNTs. Many applications of fullerenes require detailed understanding of how these molecules interact with surfaces and the perturbations this induces. In this work the interaction of C60 with highly ordered pyrolytic graphite (HOPG) and Ni(110) is studied using scanning tunnelling microscopy (STM), low energy electron diffraction (LEED), XPS and UPS. Investigation focuses on a novel two-dimensional solid-vapour phase in the C60-HOPG system and the C60-induced reconstruction of the Ni(110) surface
