    Determinants of environmental management in the red sea hotels: Personal and organizational values and contextual variables

    What motivates firms to adopt environmental management practices is one of the most significant aspects in the contemporary academic debate in which the review of the existing literature yields, with an obvious contextual bias toward developed world, contested theories and inconclusive findings. Providing a unique model that brings together the individual and organizational levels of analysis on firms' adoption of environmental management practices, this study aims to provide a new insight from the context of developing world. Data from 158 Red Sea hotels reveal two identifiable dimensions of environmental management-planning and organization, and operations-that can be explained as originating from different values. Whereas organizational altruism is a powerful predictor of both dimensions, managers' personal values and organizational competitive orientation are only relevant to environmental operations. The evidence also indicates that contextual variables such as chain affiliation, hotel star rating, and size are important to explain hotels' environmental management behaviors. © 2012 ICHRIE

    Differential Stability of Aurein 1.2 Pores in Model Membranes of Two Probiotic Strains

    Aurein 1.2 is an antimicrobial peptide from the skin secretion of an Australian frog. In the previous experimental work, we reported a differential action of aurein 1.2 on two probiotic strains Lactobacillus delbrueckii subsp. bulgaricus (CIDCA 331) and Lactobacillus delbrueckii subsp. lactis (CIDCA 133). The differences found were attributed to the bilayer compositions. Cell cultures and CIDCA 331-derived liposomes showed higher susceptibility than the ones derived from the CIDCA 133 strain, leading to content leakage and structural disruption. Here, we used molecular dynamics simulations to explore these systems at the atomistic level. We hypothesize that if the antimicrobial peptides organized themselves to form a pore, it will be more stable in membranes that emulate the CIDCA 331 strain than in those of the CIDCA 133 strain. To test this hypothesis, we simulated preassembled aurein 1.2 pores embedded into bilayer models that emulate the two probiotic strains. It was found that the general behavior of the systems depends on the composition of the membrane rather than the preassemble system characteristics. Overall, it was observed that aurein 1.2 pores are more stable in the CIDCA 331 model membranes. This fact coincides with the high susceptibility of this strain against antimicrobial peptide. In contrast, in the case of the CIDCA 133 model membranes, peptides migrate to the water-lipid interphase, the pore shrinks, and the transport of water through the pore is reduced. The tendency of glycolipids to make hydrogen bonds with peptides destabilizes the pore structures. This feature is observed to a lesser extent in CIDCA 331 due to the presence of anionic lipids. Glycolipid transverse diffusion (flip-flop) between monolayers occurs in the pore surface region in all the cases considered. These findings expand our understanding of the antimicrobial peptide resistance properties of probiotic strains.Fil: Balatti, Galo Ezequiel.     The Effect of Organizational Structure and Hoteliers' Risk Proclivity on Innovativeness

    The purpose of this article is to examine the impact of organisational structure and hoteliers’ risk proclivity on innovativeness in the context of the Japanese hotel industry. Survey questionnaires were used to collect relevant data from 115 hotels in Japan. Using a multiple regression analysis, the antecedents of innovativeness in the hotel industry are been examined. The findings are mixed with previous research but provide new insights by exploring the effect of organisational structure and hoteliers’ risk proclivity on innovativeness. As a result, we believe that this research is valuable in understanding some key important drivers in innovative activities in the context of the hotel industry

    Testing and Acceptance of Fuel Plates for RERTR Fuel Development Experiments

    ABSTRACT This paper discusses how candidate fuel plates for RERTR Fuel Development experiments are examined and tested for acceptance prior to reactor insertion. These tests include destructive and nondestructive examinations (DE and NDE). The DE includes blister annealing for dispersion fuel plates, bend testing of adjacent cladding, and microscopic examination of archive fuel plates. The NDE includes Ultrasonic (UT) scanning and radiography. UT tests include an ultrasonic scan for areas of "debonds" and a high frequency ultrasonic scan to determine the "minimum cladding" over the fuel. Radiography inspections include identifying fuel outside of the maximum fuel zone and measurements and calculations for fuel density. Details of each test are provided and acceptance criteria are defined. These tests help to provide a high level of confidence that the fuel plate will perform in the reactor without a breach in the cladding
