The thesis presents a description of the steps involved in designing and evaluating the usability of graphical user interferences. It presents in detail Norman's heuristics, Fitts's law, cursor guiding task, Mandel's golden principles, Nielsen's principles, design guidelines and usability dimensions. Heuristic evaluation and user testing are described theoretically and are furthermore presented by providing practical examples too. The guidelines and principles are included in a programming tool for assistance in designing and evaluating graphical user interferences that were developed and tested. The programming tool was created in the development environment NetBeans combined by Java, Swing and HTML. The programming tool performed well in practice. We used it to draw up an example of heuristic report and a user testing report of evaluating the user interface of the Clicktrans application

Moj materinski ā€¦ hrvatski, istarski, domaći ā€¦ ovisi di se nalazim ā€“ Percepcija materinskoga jezika u viÅ”ejezičnom okruženju

Mother tongue is very often seen as bipartite, i.e. that it is indicated on two levels, the level of the individual and the level of the collective. Such ambiguity of the notion can cause certain tensions manifested as the tension between the individual speaker and his/her community, but also within the speaker (Å kiljan 1992). On the other hand, today it is accepted that individual speakers can have more than one mother tongue. This is in accordance with the possibility to choose between different identities expressed through language and the use of variants, by mixing idioms and languages, through bilingualism, etc. In the present paper the notion of mother tongue is analysed on both levels and in the specific context of a multilingual area. We tried to see how the notion of mother tongue is used and understood by its users, and how it is perceived and changed depending on e.g. the commu-nity, education, and personal life history. As the source for the analysis of the individual per-ception of mother tongue in-depth interviews conducted in Istria in spring of 2007 were used. Such an analysis is contextualised within the definition of the notion of mother tongue by of-ficials and official documents, e.g. the authoritiesā€™ documents about language issues.

Dealing with the positive publication bias: Why you should really publish your negative results

    Get PDF
Studies with positive results are greatly more represented in literature than studies with negative results, producing so-called publication bias. This review aims to discuss occurring problems around negative results and to emphasize the importance of reporting negative results. Underreporting of negative results introduces bias into meta-analysis, which consequently misinforms researchers, doctors and policymakers. More resources are potentially wasted on already disputed research that remains unpublished and therefore unavailable to the scientific community. Ethical obligations need to be considered when reporting results of studies on human subjects as people have exposed themselves to risk with the assurance that the study is performed to benefit others. Some studies disprove the common conception that journal editors preferably publish positive findings, which are considered as more citable. Therefore, all stakeholders, but especially researchers, need to be conscious of disseminating negative and positive findings alike

Association of IL-1Ī² and IL-10 Polymorphisms with Prostate Cancer Risk and Grade of Disease in Eastern Croatian Population

Single nuclear polymorphisms (SNPs) in the promotor regions of cytokine genes included in angiogenesis may influence prostate cancer (PCa) development via regulation of the pathways of tumor angiogenesis. The aim of the present study was to investigate the association of IL-1Ī²+3954 (rs1143634) and IL-10-1082 (rs1800896) polymorphisms with PCa risk and aggressiveness in eastern Croatian patients. One hundred twenty PCa patients and 120 benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) controls were genotyped using real-time PCR (LightCycler Instrument, Roche Diagnostics) and the melting curve analysis method. There was no significant difference in the frequency of genotypes for the two polymorphisms between PCa patients and controls (Ļ‡2=0.857, p=0.355 for IL-Ī²1; Ļ‡2=0.026, p=0.872 for IL-10). Carriers of the IL-10-1082A>G variant were found to be associated with the Gleason score (GS)>7 (AA versus GA+GG, OR=3.47, 95% CI 1.11-10.88, p=0.033). There was no significant difference in the frequency of genotypes for the two polymorphisms and the presence of metastatic disease in PCa patients. These results suggest that tested SNPs associated with differential production of IL-1Ī² and IL-10 are not risk factors for PCa and do not correlate with the presence of distant metastasis in eastern Croatians. We found that IL-10-1082 GA+/or GG carriers have a higher risk of developing PCa with GS>7 in eastern Croatians

Pathologic patterns of interleukin 10 expression ā€“ A review

    Get PDF
Interleukin 10 (IL-10) is important pleiotropic immunoregulatory cytokine which gene is located on chromosome 1 at 1q31-32. There are many genetic variants of IL-10 gene. However, the most studied are two dinucleotide repeats (microsatellites), IL10.G and IL10.R, located 1.2 kb and 4 kb upstream of the transcription start site and three single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) -1082(G/A), -819(C/T) and -592(C/A). A large number of studies have shown that IL-10 gene polymorphisms are associated with different diseases and play an important role in pathophysiology and clinical course of these diseases. This review summarizes published literature knowledge about the association of IL-10 polymorphisms and expression patterns with asthma, systemic lupus erythematosus, psoriasis, inflammatory bowel disease, rheumatoid arthritis, tuberculosis and some neoplasm

Verification of the Automated ELISA Assay for Hepcidin-25 in Human Serum

Introduction: Hepcidin-25, the bioactive form of hepcidin, is the master protein in regulating iron homeostasis. Serum concentrations, measured by different methods, are often incomparable and complicate results interpretation. Materials and Methods: The aim was to verify the first fully automated enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) method, using the DRG Hybrid XL analyzer (DRG Instruments, Marburg, Germany) standardized against the mass spectrometry method. Intra- (CVi) and inter-assay (CVg) precision and bias were performed using commercially available controls with low (C1) and high (C2) concentrations. The reference interval was verified by analyzing serum samples of 20 healthy males. Results: CVi = 9.1% (C1), 4.5% (C2); CVg = 8.9% (C1), 5.6% (C2); calculated bias was 33% for C1 and 20% for C2, respectively. Conclusion: Verification of the fully automated ELISA method for hepcidin-25 in serum on the DRG Hybrid XL analyzer met the analytical acceptance criteria
