    Laboratory Simulation of the Effect of Rocket Thrust on a Precessing Space Vehicle

    Ground tests of solid propellant rocket motors have shown that metal-containing propellants produce various amounts of slag (primarily aluminum oxide) which is trapped in the motor case, causing a loss of specific impulse. Although not yet definitely established, the presence of a liquid pool of slag also may contribute to nutational instabilities that have been observed with certain spin-stabilized, upper-stage vehicles. Because of the rocket's axial acceleration, absent in the ground tests, estimates of in-flight slag mass have been very uncertain. Yet such estimates are needed to determine the magnitude of the control authority of the systems required for eliminating the instability. A test rig with an eccentrically mounted hemispherical bowl was designed and built which incorporates a follower force that properly aligns the thrust vector along the axis of spin. A program that computes the motion of a point mass in the spinning and precessing bowl was written. Using various RPMs, friction factors, and initial starting conditions, plots were generated showing the trace of the point mass around the inside of the fuel tank. The apparatus will incorporate future design features such as a variable nutation angle and a film height measuring instrument. Data obtained on the nutational instability characteristics will be used to determine order of magnitude estimates of control authority needed to minimize the sloshing effect

    Natriuretic Peptide Signaling via Guanylyl Cyclase (GC)-A: An Endogenous Protective Mechanism of the Heart

    Atrial and brain natriuretic peptides (ANP and BNP, respectively) are cardiac hormones, secretions of which are markedly upregulated during cardiac failure, making their plasma levels clinically useful diagnostic markers. ANP and BNP exert potent diuretic, natriuretic and vasorelaxant effects, which are mediated via their common receptor, guanylyl cyclase (GC)-A (also called natriuretic peptide receptor (NPR)-A). Mice deficient for GC-A are mildly hypertensive and show marked cardiac hypertrophy and fibrosis that is disproportionately severe, given their modestly higher blood pressure. Indeed, the cardiac hypertrophy seen in these mice is enhanced in a blood pressure-independent manner and is suppressed by cardiomyocyte-specific overexpression of GC-A. These results suggest that the actions of a local cardiac ANP/BNP-GC-A system are essential for maintenance of normal cardiac architecture. In addition, GC-A was shown to exert its cardioprotective effects by inhibiting angiotensin II-induced hypertrophic signaling, and recent evidence suggests that regulator of G protein signaling (RGS) subtype 4 is involved in the GC-A-mediated inhibition of Gαq-coupled hypertrophic signal transduction. Furthermore, several different groups have reported that functional mutations in the promoter region of the human GC-A gene are associated with essential hypertension and ventricular hypertrophy. These findings suggest that endogenous GC-A protects the heart from pathological hypertrophic stimuli, and that humans who express only low levels of GC-A are genetically predisposed to cardiac remodeling and hypertension

    Hidden magnetism at the pseudogap critical point of a high temperature superconductor

    The mysterious pseudogap phase of cuprate superconductors ends at a critical hole doping level p* but the nature of the ground state below p* is still debated. Here, we show that the genuine nature of the magnetic ground state in La2-xSrxCuO4 is hidden by competing effects from superconductivity: applying intense magnetic fields to quench superconductivity, we uncover the presence of glassy antiferromagnetic order up to the pseudogap boundary p* ~ 0.19, and not above. There is thus a quantum phase transition at p*, which is likely to underlie highfield observations of a fundamental change in electronic properties across p*. Furthermore, the continuous presence of quasi-static moments from the insulator up to p* suggests that the physics of the doped Mott insulator is relevant through the entire pseudogap regime and might be more fundamentally driving the transition at p* than just spin or charge ordering.Comment: 26 pages, supplementary info include

    Swept source / Fourier domain polarization sensitive optical coherence tomography with a passive polarization delay unit

    Polarization sensitive optical coherence tomography (PS-OCT) is a functional imaging method that provides additional contrast using the light polarizing properties of a sample. This manuscript describes PS-OCT based on ultrahigh speed swept source / Fourier domain OCT operating at 1050nm at 100kHz axial scan rates using single mode fiber optics and a multiplexing approach. Unlike previously reported PS-OCT multiplexing schemes, the method uses a passive polarization delay unit and does not require active polarization modulating devices. This advance decreases system cost and avoids complex synchronization requirements. The polarization delay unit was implemented in the sample beam path in order to simultaneously illuminate the sample with two different polarization states. The orthogonal polarization components for the depth-multiplexed signals from the two input states were detected using dual balanced detection. PS-OCT images were computed using Jones calculus. 3D PS-OCT imaging was performed in the human and rat retina. In addition to standard OCT images, PS-OCT images were generated using contrast form birefringence and depolarization.     A Metastable Intermediate State of Microtubule Dynamic Instability That Differs Significantly between Plus and Minus Ends

    The current two-state GTP cap model of microtubule dynamic instability proposes that a terminal crown of GTP-tubulin stabilizes the microtubule lattice and promotes elongation while loss of this GTP-tubulin cap converts the microtubule end to shortening. However, when this model was directly tested by using a UV microbeam to sever axoneme-nucleated microtubules and thereby remove the microtubule's GTP cap, severed plus ends rapidly shortened, but severed minus ends immediately resumed elongation (Walker, R.A., S.     A follow-up study for left ventricular mass on chromosome 12p11 identifies potential candidate genes

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Left ventricular mass (LVM) is an important risk factor for cardiovascular disease. Previously we found evidence for linkage to chromosome 12p11 in Dominican families, with a significant increase in a subset of families with high average waist circumference (WC). In the present study, we use association analysis to further study the genetic effect on LVM.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>Association analysis with LVM was done in the one LOD critical region of the linkage peak in an independent sample of 897 Caribbean Hispanics. Genotype data were available on 7085 SNPs from 23 to 53 MB on chromosome 12p11. Adjustment was made for vascular risk factors and population substructure using an additive genetic model. Subset analysis by WC was performed to test for a difference in genetic effects between the high and low WC subsets.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>In the overall analysis, the most significant association was found to rs10743465, downstream of the <it>SOX5 </it>gene (p = 1.27E-05). Also, 19 additional SNPs had nominal p < 0.001. In the subset analysis, the most significant difference in genetic effect between those with high and low WC occurred with rs1157480 (p = 1.37E-04 for the difference in β coefficients), located upstream of <it>TMTC1</it>. Twelve additional SNPs in or near 6 genes had p < 0.001.</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>The current study supports previously identified evidence by linkage for a genetic effect on LVM on chromosome 12p11 using association analysis in population-based Caribbean Hispanic cohort. <it>SOX5 </it>may play an important role in the regulation of LVM. An interaction of <it>TMTC1 </it>with abdominal obesity may contribute to phenotypic variation of LVM.</p

    A One-Dimensional (1-D) Three-Region Model for a Bubbling Fluidized-Bed Adsorber

    A general one-dimensional (1-D), three-region model for a bubbling fluidized-bed adsorber with internal heat exchangers has been developed. The model can predict the hydrodynamics of the bed and provides axial profiles for all temperatures, concentrations, and velocities. The model is computationally fast and flexible and allows for any system of adsorption and desorption reactions to be modeled, making the model applicable to any adsorption process. The model has been implemented in both gPROMS and Aspen Custom Modeler, and the behavior of the model has been verified
