Biomedical abbreviation recognition and resolution by PROSA-MED
The amount of abbreviations used in biomedical literature
increases constantly. Despite the existence of acronym dictionaries, it
is not viable to keep them updated with new creations. Thus, in the
processing of biomedical texts, discovering and disambiguating acronyms
and their expanded forms are essential aspects and this is the objective
proposed by BARR task at IberEval 2017 Workshop. This paper presents
our participation in this task. We propose five systems that deal with the
problem in different ways. Three of the systems are atomic approaches,
while two of them are combinations of the atomic systems. One of the
systems clearly outperforms the others, both in the detection of entities
(F-score of 0.749 in the test set) as well as identifying relations between
short-long forms (F-score of 0.697 in the test set).Peer ReviewedPostprint (published version

Injectable diblock copolypeptide hydrogel provides platform to maintain high local concentrations of taxol and local tumor control
Abstract Introduction Surgical resection and systemic chemotherapy with temozolomide remain the mainstay for treatment of glioblastoma. However, many patients are not candidates for surgical resection given inaccessible tumor location or poor health status. Furthermore, despite being first line treatment, temozolomide has only limited efficacy. Methods The development of injectable hydrogel-based carrier systems allows for the delivery of a wide range of chemotherapeutics that can achieve high local concentrations, thus potentially avoiding systemic side effects and wide-spread neurotoxicity. To test this modality in a realistic environment, we developed a diblock copolypeptide hydrogel (DCH) capable of carrying and releasing paclitaxel, a compound that we found to be highly potent against primary gliomasphere cells. Results The DCH produced minimal tissue reactivity and was well tolerated in the immune-competent mouse brain. Paclitaxel-loaded hydrogel induced less tissue damage, cellular inflammation and reactive astrocytes than cremaphor-taxol (typical taxol-carrier) or hydrogel alone. In a deep subcortical xenograft model, of glioblastoma in immunodeficient mice, injection of paclitaxel-loaded hydrogel led to a high local concentration of paclitaxel and led to local tumor control and improved survival. However, the tumor cells were highly migratory and were able to eventually escape the area of treatment. Conclusions These findings suggest this technology may be ultimately applicable to patients with deep-seated inoperable tumors, but as currently formulated, complete tumor eradication would be highly unlikely. Future studies should focus on targeting the migratory potential of surviving cells
Parallel implementation of fuzzy minimals clustering algorithm
Clustering aims to classify different patterns into groups called clusters. Many algorithms for both hard and fuzzy clustering have been developed to deal with exploratory data analysis in many contexts such as image processing, pattern recognition, etc. However, we are witnessing the era of big data computing where computing resources are becoming the main bottleneck to deal with those large datasets. In this context, sequential algorithms need to be redesigned and even rethought to fully leverage the emergent massively parallel architectures. In this paper, we propose a parallel implementation of the fuzzy minimals clustering algorithm called Parallel Fuzzy Minimal (PFM). Our experimental results reveal linear speed-up of PFM when compared to the sequential counterpart version, keeping very good classification quality.Ingeniería, Industria y Construcció
Phase diagram of Fe-doped Ni-Mn-Ga ferromagnetic shape-memory alloys
We have studied the effect of Fe addition on the structural and magnetic
transitions in the magnetic shape memory alloy Ni-Mn-Ga by substituting
systematically each atomic species by Fe. Calorimetric and AC susceptibility
measurements have been carried out in order to study the magnetic and
structural transformation properties. We find that the addition of Fe modifies
the structural and magnetic transformation temperatures. Magnetic transition
temperatures are displaced to higher values when Fe is substituted into
Ni-Mn-Ga, while martensitic and premartensitic transformation temperatures
shift to lower values. Moreover, it has been found that the electron per atom
concentration essentially governs the phase stability in the quaternary system.
However, the observed scaling of transition temperatures with differs
from that reported in the related ternary system Ni-Mn-Ga.Comment: 8 pages, 8 figures. Accepted for publication in the Physical Review
The accounting of the Real e Ilustre cofradía de Nuestro padre Jesus Nazareno of Cartagena during the second third of the twentieth century

Arsenic removal from groundwater: technological design for rural areas
A technological design for water processing for rural and peri-urban areas with no drinking water was created as part of a general project aimed at treating groundwater containing arsenic values higher than those established by the WHO (10 μg L-1) for consumption. The construction of treatment equipments (batch type) is simple and operatively easy. The adsorbent is a low-cost, Fe-rich and clay mineral that is abundant in Buenos Aires Province. Local conditions of water, particularly physicochemical properties, have been taken into account to adapt the process which operates with volumes from 2000 to 4000 L of water/stage. Three plants have been installed in schools of rural areas of Buenos Aires Province. A new plant is being constructed in Inchausti School of the UNLP located in 25 de Mayo city. The equipments provide water in educational buildings and nearby populations. Some technical data about the process are reported in this communication. It is necessary to mention that the first prototype, which was installed two years ago, has been continuously used without having replaced the adsorbent so far. Elastocaloric effect in Ti-Ni shape-memory wires associated with the B2 ↔ B19' and B2 ↔ R structural transitions
"We have studied the elastocaloric properties of Ti-Ni shape-memory wires subjected to specific heat treatments to decouple the B2 R transition from the B2 B19' one. The entropy values at moderate stresses (similar to 170 MPa) for the B2 B19' transition are remarkably high (in the range 60-80 J/kg K). However, in spite of the B2 R transition exhibits significantly lower entropy changes (similar to 12 J/kg K), the much smaller hysteresis of this transition gives rise to a larger reversible elastocaloric effect for low applied stresses. Therefore, the reversible elastocaloric strength associated with the B2 R is larger than the elastocaloric strength associated with the B2 B19' transition.
Effect of polyunsaturated fatty acid deficiency on dipole relaxation in the membrane interface of rat liver microsomes
AbstractThe influence of a fat-free diet on the lipid dynamics of rat liver microsomes and liposomes of microsomal lipids was studied by using different fluorescence methods. Lifetime distribution and rotational diffusion of probes with different localization in the lipid bilayer were measured using multifrequency fluorometry. Lateral mobility was studied by measuring excimer formation of pyrenedodecanoic acid. Dipolar relaxation in the interfacial region was studied using 2-dimethylamino-6-lauroylnaphthalene (Laurdan). In spite of large changes in the fatty acid composition of microsomal lipids, polyunsaturated fatty acid deficiency showed no effect on the lifetime distribution and rotational mobility of 1,6-diphenyl-1,3,5-hexatriene (DPH), 1-(4-(trimethylamino)phenyl)-6-phenyl-1,3,5-hexatriene (TMA-DPH), 2-, 7- and 12-(9-anthroiloxy)stearic acids. The treatment did not change the lateral diffusion of pyrenedodecanoic acid, either. However, generalized polarization of Laurdan fluorescence was higher in polyunsaturated fatty acid deficient microsomes as compared to the polyunsaturated fatty acid sufficient ones. This effect was also observed in liposomes of the total microsomal lipids, indicating that the changes in fatty acid composition resulting from polyunsaturated fatty acid deficiency produced a small but significant decrease in the rate of dipolar relaxation in the region of the lipid polar groups of the bilayer. The absence of lipid gel phase domains in rat liver microsomes was also indicated by Laurdan fluorescence features
