Directional couplers for detecting the TE sub 11 and TE sub 12 circular waveguide modes

    Get PDF
The theoretical and experimental results for a pair of mode-selective directional couplers designed to detect the TE sub 11 and TE sub 12 modes in a multimode circular wavelength are described. A brief description of the design of the couplers is presented, followed by a comparison of their measured and calculated parameters. The couplers were used to measure the characteristics of a circular waveguide mode converter. The results of these measurements are described

A multiflare horn with 1-megawatt power handling capability

    Get PDF
The design and testing of the prototype horn for the proposed 1-megawatt radar are described. The unique features of this square horn include a multiflare design in which flare angle changes rather than corrugations are used to generate the required higher-order modes. A five-port combining section is used at the input. The design of this section and the multiflare section are described. Measured radiation patterns are in good agreement with theoretical patterns

Calculated 70-meter antenna performance for offset L-band and C-band feeds

    Get PDF
A series of calculations that were carried out in order to determine the performance of the new dual-shaped 70 meter antenna for feeds that are displaced from the focal ring are summarized. Calculations were carried out at 1.68 GHz (L-band) and 5.0 GHz (C-band) for a number of feed/subreflector configurations. The effects of feed displacement, feed pointing angle, subreflector tilt, and lateral subreflector movement are summarized. Of specific interest are gain, beam squint, and spillover noise temperature for each of the feed/subreflector configurations described above

Long-term amplitude and phase stability of the 400-kW 2.115-GHz transmitter

    Get PDF
Results of recent measurements of the long-term phase, amplitude and group delay stability of the 400-kW S-band (2.115-GHz) transmitter are reported. Various control parameters which are responsible for many of the observed instabilities are identified. Further tests to identify the parameters responsible for the remaining instabilities are suggested

Thermal measurements of microwave transmitter feedhorn window

    Get PDF
Thermal measurements of microwave transmitter feedhorn windows were performed using an imaging infrared radiometer. The measurement technique is described and results are presented for windows made of 0.001-in. Kapton (trademark of Dupont Chemical Co.) and 0.1-in. HTP-6 (Space Shuttle tile material). Measured and calculated temperatures agree well

Phase noise measurements of the 400-kW, 2.115-GHz (S-band) transmitter

    Get PDF
The measurement theory is described and a test method to perform phase noise verification using off-the-shelf components and instruments is presented. The measurement technique described consists of a double-balanced mixer used as phase detector, followed by a low noise amplifier. An FFT spectrum analyzer is then used to view the modulation components. A simple calibration procedure is outlined that ensures accurate measurements. A block diagram of the configuration is presented as well as actual phase noise data from the 400 kW, 2.115 GHz (S-band) klystron transmitter
