    STRATHcube : The design of a student CubeSat using concurrent engineering methods

    With the role of concurrent engineering (CE) becoming more important to the success of companies, it is vital that engineering students are able to understand and apply this concept. In this regard, the University of Strathclyde regularly offers its students opportunities to learn about this process through practical-based CE workshops. The results from a student-based CE study of a CubeSat are therefore outlined, including the effectiveness of the session as a learning experience for students. Through collaboration and teamwork, the student team produced a feasible design concept which achieved most of the prespecified objectives. Additionally, it was determined that the learning outcomes of the study were widely met, despite it taking place virtually due to COVID-19

    Exploring the benefits of doll play through neuroscience

    It has long been hypothesized that pretend play is beneficial to social and cognitive development. However, there is little evidence regarding the neural regions that are active while children engage in pretend play. We examined the activation of prefrontal and posterior superior temporal sulcus (pSTS) regions using near-infrared spectroscopy while 42 4- to 8-year-old children freely played with dolls or tablet games with a social partner or by themselves. Social play activated right prefrontal regions more than solo play. Children engaged the pSTS during solo doll play but not during solo tablet play, suggesting they were rehearsing social cognitive skills more with dolls. These findings suggest social play utilizes multiple neural regions and highlight how doll play can achieve similar patterns of activation, even when children play by themselves. Doll play may provide a unique opportunity for children to practice social interactions important for developing social-emotional skills, such as empathy

    Cessation of mass drug administration for lymphatic filariasis in Zanzibar in 2006: was transmission interrupted?

    BACKGROUND: Lymphatic filariasis (LF) is targeted for elimination through annual mass drug administration (MDA) for 4-6 years. In 2006, Zanzibar stopped MDA against LF after five rounds of MDA revealed no microfilaraemic individuals during surveys at selected sentinel sites. We asked the question if LF transmission was truly interrupted in 2006 when MDA was stopped. METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: In line with ongoing efforts to shrink the LF map, we performed the WHO recommended transmission assessment surveys (TAS) in January 2012 to verify the absence of LF transmission on the main Zanzibar islands of Unguja and Pemba. Altogether, 3275 children were tested on both islands and 89 were found to be CFA positive; 70 in Pemba and 19 in Unguja. The distribution of schools with positive children was heterogeneous with pronounced spatial variation on both islands. Based on the calculated TAS cut-offs of 18 and 20 CFA positive children for Pemba and Unguja respectively, we demonstrated that transmission was still ongoing in Pemba where the cut-off was exceeded. CONCLUSIONS: Our findings indicated ongoing transmission of LF on Pemba in 2012. Moreover, we presented evidence from previous studies that LF transmission was also active on Unguja shortly after stopping MDA in 2006. Based on these observations the government of Zanzibar decided to resume MDA against LF on both islands in 2013

    Logarithmic intensity and speckle-based motion contrast methods for human retinal vasculature visualization using swept source optical coherence tomography

    We formulate a theory to show that the statistics of OCT signal amplitude and intensity are highly dependent on the sample reflectivity strength, motion, and noise power. Our theoretical and experimental results depict the lack of speckle amplitude and intensity contrasts to differentiate regions of motion from static areas. Two logarithmic intensity-based contrasts, logarithmic intensity variance (LOGIV) and differential logarithmic intensity variance (DLOGIV), are proposed for serving as surrogate markers for motion with enhanced sensitivity. Our findings demonstrate a good agreement between the theoretical and experimental results for logarithmic intensity-based contrasts. Logarithmic intensity-based motion and speckle-based contrast methods are validated and compared for in vivo human retinal vasculature visualization using high-speed swept-source optical coherence tomography (SS-OCT) at 1060 nm. The vasculature was identified as regions of motion by creating LOGIV and DLOGIV tomograms: multiple B-scans were collected of individual slices through the retina and the variance of logarithmic intensities and differences of logarithmic intensities were calculated. Both methods captured the small vessels and the meshwork of capillaries associated with the inner retina in en face images over 4 mm^2 in a normal subject

    Exact solution, scaling behaviour and quantum dynamics of a model of an atom-molecule Bose-Einstein condensate

    We study the exact solution for a two-mode model describing coherent coupling between atomic and molecular Bose-Einstein condensates (BEC), in the context of the Bethe ansatz. By combining an asymptotic and numerical analysis, we identify the scaling behaviour of the model and determine the zero temperature expectation value for the coherence and average atomic occupation. The threshold coupling for production of the molecular BEC is identified as the point at which the energy gap is minimum. Our numerical results indicate a parity effect for the energy gap between ground and first excited state depending on whether the total atomic number is odd or even. The numerical calculations for the quantum dynamics reveals a smooth transition from the atomic to the molecular BEC.Comment: 5 pages, 4 figure

    ARIES: A Corpus of Scientific Paper Edits Made in Response to Peer Reviews

    Revising scientific papers based on peer feedback is a challenging task that requires not only deep scientific knowledge and reasoning, but also the ability to recognize the implicit requests in high-level feedback and to choose the best of many possible ways to update the manuscript in response. We introduce this task for large language models and release ARIES, a dataset of review comments and their corresponding paper edits, to enable training and evaluating models. We study two versions of the task: comment-edit alignment and edit generation, and evaluate several baselines, including GPT-4. We find that models struggle even to identify the edits that correspond to a comment, especially in cases where the comment is phrased in an indirect way or where the edit addresses the spirit of a comment but not the precise request. When tasked with generating edits, GPT-4 often succeeds in addressing comments on a surface level, but it rigidly follows the wording of the feedback rather than the underlying intent, and includes fewer technical details than human-written edits. We hope that our formalization, dataset, and analysis will form a foundation for future work in this area.Comment: 11 pages, 2 figure

    Controlling magnetic order and quantum disorder in molecule-based magnets

    We investigate the structural and magnetic properties of two molecule-based magnets synthesized from the same starting components. Their different structural motifs promote contrasting exchange pathways and consequently lead to markedly different magnetic ground states. Through examination of their structural and magnetic properties we show that [Cu(pyz)(H2O)(gly)2](ClO4)2 may be considered a quasi-one-dimensional quantum Heisenberg antiferromagnet whereas the related compound [Cu(pyz)(gly)](ClO4), which is formed from dimers of antiferromagnetically interacting Cu2+ spins, remains disordered down to at least 0.03 K in zero field but shows a field-temperature phase diagram reminiscent of that seen in materials showing a Bose-Einstein condensation of magnons

    Vitamin D status in mothers with pre-eclampsia and their infants: a case-control study from Serbia, a country without a vitamin D fortification policy

    Objective: The objective of the present study was to determine if vitamin D intake and status are associated with pre-eclampsia in a country without a vitamin D fortification policy. Design: A case-control study of pregnancies with (case) and without (control) pre-eclampsia was conducted from January to April when UVB is minimal. Maternal and cord blood obtained at delivery were measured for plasma 25-hydroxycholecalciferol (25-OH-D-3), 3-epimer of 25-OH-D-3 (3-epi-25-OH-D-3) and 24,25-dihydroxycholecalciferol (24,25-(OH)(2)D-3) by LC-MS/MS and maternal 1,25-dihydroxyvitamin D (1,25-(OH) 2D). Differences between groups were tested with ANOVA and Bonferroni post hoc tests (P lt 0.05). Setting: Clinical Center of Serbia. Subjects: Pregnant women with and without pre-eclampsia (n 60) and their infants. Results: Exogenous vitamin D intake (0.95-16.25 mu g/d (38-650 IU/d)) was not significantly different between groups. Women with pre-eclampsia delivered infants at an earlier gestational age and had significantly lower mean total plasma 25-hydroxyvitamin D (25-OH-D; case: 11.2 (SD 5.1); control: 16.1 (SD 5.7) ng/ml; P=0.0006), 25-OH-D-3 (case: 10.0 (SD 4.9); control: 14.2 (SD 5.8) ng/ml; P=0.002), 3-epi-25-OH-D-3 (case: 0.5 (SD 0.2); control: 0.7 (SD 0.2) ng/ml; P=0.0007) and 1,25-(OH)(2)D (case: 56.5 (SD 26.6); control: 81.0 (SD 25.7) pg/ml; P=0.018), while 24,25-(OH)(2)D-3 was not different between groups. Infants did not differ in total plasma 25-OH-D, 25-OH-D-3, 3-epi-25-OH-D-3 and 24,25-(OH)(2)D-3, but the mean proportion of 3-epi-25-OH-D-3 was higher in the infant case group (case: 7.9 (SD 1.1); control: 7.0 (SD 1.4) % of total 25-OH-D-3; P=0.005). Conclusions: A high prevalence of vitamin D deficiency, as defined by plasma 25-OH-D lt 12 ng/ml, was observed in 47 % of all mothers and 77 % of all infants. These data underscore the need for prenatal vitamin D supplementation and a food fortification policy in Serbia

    The impact of direct-acting antivirals on hepatitis C viraemia among people who inject drugs in England; real-world data 2011–2018

    Direct‐acting antiviral (DAA) therapy for anybody with viraemic HCV infection has been scaled‐up in England since 2017. To assess early impacts, we investigated trends in, and factors associated with, HCV viraemia among people who inject drugs (PWID). We also examined trends in self‐reported treatment access. Bio‐behavioural data from an annual, national surveillance survey of PWID (2011–2018) estimated trends in viraemic prevalence among HCV antibody‐positive PWID. Multivariable logistic regression identified characteristics independently associated with viraemia. Trends in treatment access were examined for PWID with known infection. Between 2011 and 2016, viraemic prevalence among antibody‐positive PWID remained stable (2011, 57.7%; 2016, 55.8%) but decreased in 2017 (49.4%) and 2018 (50.4%) (both p < 0.001). After adjustment for demographic and behavioural characteristics, there remained significant reduction in viraemia in 2017 (adjusted odds ratio [aOR] 0.79, 95% CI 0.65–0.94) and 2018 (aOR 0.79, 95% CI 0.66–0.93) compared to 2016. Other factors associated with viraemia were male gender (aOR 1.68, 95% CI 1.53–1.86), geographical region, injecting in past year (aOR 1.26, 95% CI 1.13–1.41), imprisonment (aOR 1.14, 95% CI 1.04–1.31) and homelessness (aOR 1.17, 95% CI 1.04–1.31). Among non‐viraemic PWID with known infection, the proportion reporting ever receiving treatment increased in 2017 (28.7%, p < 0.001) and 2018 (38.9%, p < 0.001) compared to 2016 (14.5%). In conclusion, there has been a small reduction in HCV viraemia among antibody‐positive PWID in England since 2016, alongside DAA scale‐up, and some indication that treatment access has improved in the same period. Population‐level monitoring and focus on harm reduction is critical for achieving and evaluating elimination

    Psychosocial and sexual factors associated with recent sexual health clinic attendance and HIV testing among trans people in the UK.

    OBJECTIVES: Trans people remain an understudied population in the UK, with unmet sexual health needs. The aim of this research was to identify possible barriers and facilitators for sexual health clinic attendance and HIV testing among trans people. METHODS: Lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) participants from across the UK were invited to take part in a cross-sectional online survey through Facebook advertising (April-June 2018). Psychosocial and sexual factors associated with recent sexual health clinic attendance, and ever having an HIV test were examined using multivariate logistic regression. RESULTS: A total of 3007 cisgender and 500 trans participants completed the survey. Trans participants were less likely to attend a sexual health clinic than cisgender participants (27% vs 36%, p<0.001) and report ever having an HIV test (49% vs 64%, p<0.001). One trans participant reported living with HIV and three reported currently taking pre-exposure prophylaxis. Factors associated with trans sexual health clinic attendance were: living in London, having a relationship with multiple partners, engaging in condomless anal intercourse, greater life satisfaction, and having alcohol and/or drugs before sex. Being a person of colour, aged 25-49 years, in a relationship with multiple partners, condomless anal intercourse, lower body dissatisfaction, and having drugs before sex were associated with ever having an HIV test among trans participants. CONCLUSIONS: Trans people were less likely to attend sexual health services than cisgender people, and half of trans participants who reported condomless anal intercourse had never had an HIV test. Further research is needed to understand and improve uptake of sexual health services among trans people
