    The impace of custom ROM backups on android external storage erasure

    The Android operating system is the current market leader on mobile devices such as smartphones and tablet computers. The core operating system is open source and has a number of developers creating variants of this operating system. These variants, often referred to as custom ROMs are available for a wide number of mobile devices. Custom ROMs provide a number of features, such as enhanced control over the operating system, variation in user interfaces and so on. The process of installing custom ROMs is often accomplished through the use of a ROM manager application. Such applications often provide mechanisms to back up the contents of the mobile device prior to upgrade. This mechanism is utilised in the case of a failed update to restore the device to its previous functional state. Backups produced in this manner are often stored in on an external media such as a micro-SD card.In the conducted research we evaluated devices inbuilt data erasure mechanisms within the context of erasure of backups produced by ROM managers. It was found that simply using the devices Format External / SD function is not an effective means of completely erasing these backups. Once recovered, these backups offer a quick source of information that a potential attacker could carve to retrieve user files such as media transferred to the external or from applications. Although the same files could be recovered from an image of the external storage itself, the carving process is more efficient than traditional carving methods

    Flow cytometric detection of gamma interferon can effectively discriminate Mycobacterium bovis BCG-vaccinated cattle from M. bovis-infected cattle

    Mycobacterium bovis is the causative agent of bovine tuberculosis, a disease that is increasing in incidence in United Kingdom cattle herds. In addition to increasing economic losses, the rise in bovine tuberculosis poses a human health risk. There is an urgent requirement for effective strategies for disease eradication; this will likely involve vaccination in conjunction with current test and slaughter policies. A policy involving vaccination would require an accurate diagnosis of M. bovis-infected animals and the potential to distinguish these animals from vaccinates. Currently used diagnostic tests, the skin test and gamma interferon (IFN-γ) blood test, have a sensitivity of up to 95%. A further complication is that M. bovis BCG-vaccinated animals are also scored positive by these tests. We tested the hypothesis that the quantification of IFN-γ-producing lymphocytes by flow cytometric analysis of intracellular IFN-γ expression would provide a more accurate discrimination of M. bovis-infected animals from BCG vaccinates. Significant numbers of IFN-γ-expressing CD4(+) T cells were detected following culture of heparinized blood from M. bovis-infected animals, but not from BCG vaccinates, with purified protein derived from M. bovis (PPD-B) or live mycobacteria. Only 1 of 17 BCG-vaccinated animals had a significant number of CD4(+) T lymphocytes expressing IFN-γ, compared with 21/22 M. bovis-infected animals. This assay could allow an accurate diagnosis of M. bovis and allow the discrimination of BCG-vaccinated cattle from infected cattle

Explanations of the WFE argue that weapons engage attention because they are unusual and/or threatening, which causes encoding deficits for the other items in the visual scene. Previous WFE research has always embedded the weapon and nonweapon objects within a larger context that provides information about an actor's intention to use the object.     “I don't eat when I'm sick”: Older people's food and mealtime experiences in hospital

    Background Inadequate dietary intake is a common problem amongst older acute-care patients and has been identified as an independent risk factor for in-hospital mortality. This study aimed to explore whether food and mealtime experiences contribute to inadequate dietary intake in older people during hospitalisation. Methods This was a qualitative phenomenological study, data for which were collected using semi-structured interviews over a three-week period. During this time, 26 patients aged 65 years or more, admitted to medical and surgical wards in a tertiary acute-care hospital, were asked to participate if they were observed to eat less than half of the meal offered at lunch. Participants provided their perspectives on food and mealtimes in hospital. Responses were recorded as hand-written notes, which were agreed with the interviewee, and analysed thematically using the framework method. Results Twenty-five older people were interviewed across six wards. Two main themes, ‘validating circumstances’ and ‘hospital systems’, were identified. Each theme had several sub-themes. The sub-themes within validating circumstances included ‘expectations in hospital’, ‘prioritising medical treatment’, ‘being inactive’, and ‘feeling down’. Those within ‘hospital systems’ were ‘accommodating inconvenience’, ‘inflexible systems’, and ‘motivating encouragement’. Conclusion Inadequate dietary intake by older hospital patients is complex and influenced by a range of barriers. Multilevel and multidisciplinary interventions based on a shared understanding of food and nutrition as an important component of hospital care are essential to improve dietary intake and reduce the risk of adverse clinical outcomes. Improving awareness of the importance of food for recovery amongst hospitalised older people and healthcare staff is a priority

    Quantitative analysis of TM lateral leakage in foundry fabricated silicon Rib waveguides

    We show that thin, shallow ridge, silicon-on-insulator waveguides exhibiting a lateral leakage behavior can be designed and fabricated using a standard silicon photonic foundry platform. We analyze the propagation loss through the observation of the transmitted TM polarized guided mode and TE polarized radiation and experimentally demonstrate that propagation losses as low as 0.087 dB/mm can be achieved. This demonstration will open a new frontier for practical devices exploiting a lateral leakage behavior with potential applications in the fields of biosensing and quantum optics among others

O trabalho também teoriza o papel da música popular como um compoente dos debates sócio-culturais jamaicanos, projetando discursos identitários no imaginário local, regional e internacional. O argumento do artigo coloca que esta projeção acompanhada de uma ambivalência local tem criado uma abertura para uma interpretação da identidade nacional jamaicana que está inextricavelmente vinculada à marihuana. ReggaeAbstract This paper explores the construction of one variant of Jamaican national identity through the discursive pathways of its popular music, particularly Reggae and Dancehall. Using examples from these two genres, the paper examines the centrality and celebration of the weed/marijuana in these lyrical discourses. The work also theorizes the role of popular music, as a component of Jamaica’s sociocultural debates, in projecting identity discourses into the local, regional and international imagination. It argues that, these sociocultural projections, coupled with local ambivalence, have created an opening for a rendition of Jamaican national identity that is inextricably bonded to the weed/marijuana.     Functionalization of Novel PP5 Inhibitors

    The overexpression of protein phosphatase 5 has been correlated to tumor cell reproduction making it a candidate for small molecule drug therapy. Selective and potent inhibition of protein phosphatase 2A (PP2A) enzyme has been previously achieved through the development of the molecule fostriecin with key functionality being a lactone and unsaturated linear chain. The large synthetic overhead of fostriecin has led to exploration of other small molecule inhibitors that could mirror fostriecin’s interaction with the active site in the catalytic domain of PP5. The naturally occurring inhibitor, cantharidin, is functionalized with an epoxy containing eleven carbon chain to optimize binding with the active site of PP5 and to promote selectivity and potency through unique interactions with the amino acid residues. The stereoisomers formed in the Diels-Alder reaction between the robust dienophile N-phenylmaleimide and furfuryl alcohol are isolated and identified. The biologically active exo confirmation is selectively recrystallized and employed in further synthetic steps with the final product tested for inhibitory action against the PP5 enzyme

    Stability of continuously pumped atom lasers

    A multimode model of a continuously pumped atom laser is shown to be unstable below a critical value of the scattering length. Above the critical scattering length, the atom laser reaches a steady state, the stability of which increases with pumping. Below this limit the laser does not reach a steady state. This instability results from the competition between gain and loss for the excited states of the lasing mode. It will determine a fundamental limit for the linewidth of an atom laser beam.Comment: 4 page
