    A Creation of Efficiency: The Flight Time Calculator

    The privilege of flight is commonly used in the United States. However, there are many details that must be considered. A major detail that contributes to flight is the flight time. The flight time includes airport location, wind speeds, time of year, and more. The problem presented is the need for a flight time calculator. A flight time calculator will take all the necessary details into account and provide an efficient system to generate a flight plan. To create a flight time calculator, archival data is used and processed through a neural network that trains the data to consider the past flight routes and times and predict future flight routes and times. Additional data is used to determine the latitude and longitude of all the airports in the United States. Using the data sets, and accounting for seasonal winds, the code will provide the ability to determine the best plan for any flight of choice. This research is conducted under an industrial partnership with OneSky Flight and tailored towards private aviation

    poster abstractThis poster presents a one-page, high-level summary view targeted at investigators and other individuals who have need to request numbers for research, explaining the process wherein requests can be made for feasibility and/or research data. Individuals seeking data for feasibility and/or research projects may utilize web based forms to make requests. Requests are tracked and managed by the Regenstrief Data Core. There are separate forms for Feasibility/Preliminary requests and Research Data requests. The purpose of this poster is to familiarize researchers with: Where to locate these forms on the Indiana CTSI website The steps needed to fill out and submit the appropriate request form The events that transpire between making the request and receiving data In addition, a description of available services through CIDAC and the Regenstrief Data Core is provided, included but not limited to expertise in study planning and implementation, assistance with subject recruitment and management and prospective descriptive clinical and demographic data

    A Common Eider Ă— King Eider Hybrid Captured on the Kent Peninsula, Nunavut

    On 25 June 2002, we captured and recorded measurements of a male common eider (Somateria mollissima) × king eider (S. spectabilis) hybrid at Nauyak Lake, on the Kent Peninsula, Nunavut. This is the first documented capture of a hybrid eider, rarely observed in North America. Structural body measurements and mass of the hybrid were intermediate compared to those of Pacific common eiders (S. m. v-nigrum) at the same study site and king eiders at a nearby study site during the same time of year. The plumage of the captured hybrid had characteristics of both parent species. Mate pairing on overlapping spring staging or wintering areas of common and king eiders may occasionally result in hybrid offspring.Le 25 juin 2002, nous avons capturé un hybride composé d’un eider à duvet (Somateria mollissima) × un eider à tête grise (S. spectabilis) au lac Nauyak, dans la péninsule de Kent, au Nunavut, puis nous avons pris note de ses mesures. Il s’agit de la première capture répertoriée d’un eider hybride, ce qui est rarement observé en Amérique du Nord. Les mesures et la masse de la structure corporelle de l’hybride étaient intermédiaires comparativement à celles des eiders à duvet du Pacifique (S. m. v-nigrum) du même lieu d’étude et à celles des eiders à tête grise d’un lieu d’étude avoisinant pendant la même période de l’année.     We conduct a detailed measurement and analysis of a hadron beam in five-dimensional phase space at the Spallation Neutron Source Beam Test Facility. The measurement's resolution and dynamic range are sufficient to image sharp, high-dimensional features in low-density regions of phase space. To facilitate the complex task of feature identification in the five-dimensional phase space, we develop several analysis and visualization techniques, including non-planar slicing. We use these techniques to examine the transverse dependence of longitudinal hollowing and longitudinal dependence of transverse hollowing in the distribution.     Anaerobic Psychrophiles from Lake Zub and Lake Untersee, Antarctica

    The study of samples from Antarctica 2008 and 2009 expeditions organized and successfully conducted by Richard Hoover led to the isolation of diverse anaerobic strains with psychrotolerant and psychrophilic physiology. Due to the fact that Lake Untersee has never been subject to microbiological study, this work with the samples has significant and pioneering impact to the knowledge about the biology of this unique ecosystem. Also, the astrobiological significance for the study of these ecosystems is based on new findings of ice covered water systems on other bodies of our solar system. Anaerobic psychrotolerant strain LZ-22 was isolated from a frozen sample of green moss with soils around the rhizosphere collected near Lake Zub in Antarctica. Morphology of strain LZ-22 was observed to be motile, rod shaped and spore-forming cells with sizes 1 x 5-10 micron. This new isolate is a mesophile with the maximum temperature of growth at 40C. Strain LZ-22 is able to live on media without NaCl and in media with up to 7% (w/v) NaCl. It is catalase negative and grows only on sugars with the best growth rate being on lactose. The strain is a neutrophile and grows between pH 5 and 9.0 with the optimum at 7.8. Another two strains UL7-96mG and LU-96m7P were isolated from deep water samples of Lake Untersee. Proteolytic strain LU-96m7P had a truly psychrophilic nature and refused to grow at room temperature. Sugarlytic strain UL7-96mG was found to be psychrotolerant, but its rate of growth at 3C was very high compared with other mesophiles. Two homoacetogenic psychrophilic strains A7AC-96m and AC-DS7 were isolated and purified from samples of Lake Untersee; both of them are able to grow chemolithotrophically on H2+CO2. In the presence of lactate, these strains are able to grow only at 0-18C, and growth at 22C was observed only with yeast extract stimulation.     Making Connections: Developing Textbook Affordability Initiatives Across Multiple Campuses

    Presented at the Open Education Resources Conference at Central Carolina Community College in Sanford, NC.In order to address rising textbook prices, libraries have started to create textbook affordability initiatives that include encouraging faculty to use open educational resources as well as developing stipend programs for faculty. The University Library Advisory Council recently created a committee to support and expand textbook affordability initiatives across the UNC System. This initiative included joining the Open Textbook Network, providing small stipends for faculty to review open textbooks, collaborating with NC LIVE’s Open Education North Carolina, and facilitating librarian and faculty training on open textbooks. In this session, committee members will share their experiences with collaborating and supporting textbook initiatives on both a local and statewide level. Additionally, they will share ways to customize wider initiatives and trends to fit with your individual campus environment, and tips to identify future needs and potential collaborations
